    Hi Loc986

How easy is it to remove the vents?

Are they just retained on spring clips or hidden screws?

    ta.

    Hi,

With my limited DIY skills it wasn’t that tricky to remove the vent but I was very careful.

In terms of replacing the vent found it easier to attach black plastic collar to vent first instead of fixing collar in then placing vent back in.

Tried de snorkel and have to admit not a massive change to sound but maybe that’s because I’ve already a louder style exhaust. Might re snorkel.

Get the badge from your local OPC; last one I was quoted I think £27.21+VAT, but I think that may have been before discount. That was for the grey one.

I removed my black badge before getting the car detailed - haven’t got around to replacing it yet, quite happy with the clean look.

Thanks for that. Will give them a call a that’s a good price.  What I can’t understand is the big variation in price with some of these badges. Also considering the clean look. Will take it off and see how I like it.

CWT front bumper wise did like the idea of the 911 front end swap but not sure it can be done with face lift. To be honest cosmetically that’s it for me once badge is done. Although a friend of mine had a vinyl number plate put on his 996 turbo which looks pretty cool.

  3. Can’t claim it’s my own handy work but took my 2.7 to a garage that specialises in calliper painting.

Owner before put a twin pipe exhaust so now with red callipers I’ve inadvertently creating an ‘S’ lookalike.

Last job cosmetically I want to do is change the black boxster badge as it’s missing a bit of the B. Like the idea of the silver Boxster badge ( anyone know of a good place to get one) but don’t worry won’t be putting an S next to it.

  4. Thanks for that, hopefully this pic appears below,

This is taken inside the vent pointing down. Can’t see any foam I would take out but will try and treat rust from behind the skin.

This is looking towards the front of the vent. Possibly the easily removed foam that was referred to but with some overspray that must have been done after the car came from the factory.

How it looks from outside. Luckily still small.

Lastly slightly off topic but looking at some de snorkel videos behind the exterior vent looks quite different to what I expected with no bath tub style section underneath the snorkel. Is this because it’s a facelift version?

Never been to them before but might try taking it to AMS Porsche specialist in Hertfordshire as want some other things looked at as well.

As an interim my local body shop recommended pasting the inside with grease. Stops deterioration and buys you more time before needing the repair as long as the outer paint has not yet broken.

I did this 2½ years ago with no further deterioration, but mine only has 2 small bubbles on the paint surface.

Yes these are only very small and haven’t broken surface. If I can figure out the photo up load will put some pics up.

  6. Hello all,

Had the car a good few months now and just spotted a tiny 1p sized rust bubble just below passenger side engine vent. Can’t believe I haven’t spotted it before and I keep there car covered and out of the elements.

Any ideas/tips on treating this for someone with basic DIY skills?

How about an ebay special with baffles? It will work out a lot less than half the price of a dansk. The baffles remove the drone. If you search on here, I think someone used motorcycle baffles and gave dimensions etc.

I’m not a mechanic but my boxster came with an eBay special exhaust fitted only a few hundred miles before I bought the car. Since I’ve owned it and put a couple of thousand miles on its definitely become less droney especially at 2.5k revs and less metallic sounding.

Now maybe I thought I’vejust got used to noise but popped it to my mechanic last week who had also seen the car when I just bought it. He asked if I had done anything to the exhaust as it was noticeably quieter to him too.

Thinking now about de snorkelling as the rich tuneful noise is a major factor of having an older car.

I’ll be honest; he did them for free with a paint correction and ceramic coating.

This was at Obsessions Detailing in Grimsby; great work and fantastic value.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately I’m just over 200 miles south of there so a bit far. Hopefully I’ll find someone near me  who will do as good a job as yours.

@Loc986 I think someone in the 987 section had a similar problem with corrosion pitting in these sections 2 to 3 months ago.  I believe he managed to improve if not solve but I can't recall what the solution was.

Just found it on the 987 section thanks for that.

  10. Thanks for both of your replies.

I was hoping it would be the detachable cap painted bit but yes on looking at it again it’s definitely part of frame bit that’s a bit corroded which is annoying.

@RalphyBMW do you mean the small parallelogram shaped piece that is body colour?  If so I believe it is held on with thin VHB tape and just prizes off.

987 doesn't have these infill bits, but the Polytrol advice for the black trim around the window opening is sound.  Will be doing mine this weekend....

Just jumping on this thread but does anyone know what part number this is or where I could get a replacement? On one of mine the black trim section seems to have badly corroded.

Give me a shout if you want further advice / would like me to do the job. Tbh, you could prob drop the car to me, go for a coffee/lunch and the pick it up ;)

I would only advise fitting a Bosch or similar

    Paul

    Thanks for that Paul,

Just spoke to the dealer and they now want it repaired at their garage so since they are paying will do that now.

I will though at some point want it in for a major service and checked your website out and in the summer might pop it into yours then. 👍

  13. Thanks for the replies.

I can do light maintenance but have looked at the DIY option and honestly don’t reckon I’ll have the skills/ability so will be getting a garage to do it.

The warranty I do think will be an issue as suggested they’ll say it’s not actually broken but what I’ll do is suggest to the place that they should pay the labour ( which they would have to do to get it cleaned) and I’ll pay for the replacement starter motor.

I see Dansk do a cheaper starter. Is this just as good as a Bosch starter?

  14. Hello all,

Day after I bought my 986 from an independent dealer I had the short high pitch noise after engine start which is the starter still momentarily engaged to the flywheel ( please excuse if that’s not 100% technical explanation). I have it on my doorbell camera and it sounds exactly the same as what I what I seen on YouTube with that fault.

My question is should I get the starter totally replaced or should I get the starter just lubricated? I spoke to a Porsche specialist who suggested if I did get it lubricated the same noise might come back 3 months later and really I should replace the starter.

Trying to get the dealer to pay for it to be fixed as it wasn’t there on the day I test drove but was the day after I bought it. They said they would pay to get it lubricated but probably wouldn’t pay for it to be replaced as it’s not technically broken.

Also would anyone have an idea how much it would cost to be replaced in the UK?

    Many thanks

  15. Thank you for all your replies and info.

joeluth just ordered on Amazon the boxster workshop book you recommended. Also made sure glove box and centre console bit is locked and that’s stopped it single beeping, so thanks for that tip. Definitely knew it would be towards the end of cheaper back boxes. It’s not my daily so happier it being on the loud side. If it was my daily would probably have to change it as don’t think my neighbours would appreciate me parking up after a night finish from work at 2am.

pacificjuha thanks for the video. That’s exactly the noise. Interestingly for me it doesn’t seem to do it from cold and actually the last few starts even when hot it hasn’t done it. Interestingly it did it the first day I got it but last couple of days the noise hasn’t returned.

1/2cwt haven’t got any specific parts yet although might get some new discs ( not drilled) all round. Seen some on design911 but haven’t gone with them yet. I’ll try and update my profile location. I have heard about the issue of collecting leaves in the radiators and was hoping I might be able to get a hoover nozzle in there before I get a mate to help me with taking the bumper off.

ken968 luckily with this one recently it’s had quite extensive work on the brake pipes only a couple of years and was one of the reasons I went ahead with this one.

999mch I had seen in the history that at some point water had found it’s way to the control unit under the passenger seat leaving a very expensive bill for the previous owner. I specifically checked before I bought and all carpeted etc throughout were dry. I checked the hood drain holes and they were clear but the opposite can be said for the ones near the battery which was covered in leaves and twigs. As you can see from pic below this is all just from the drivers side near the battery!  Going to try and clear the actual drain bit tomorrow. Only just in 2020 this front bit must have flooded as it had a new battery due water damage so was surprised that it’s got so much debris in there so quick. Not getting it wet till they are definitely clear.

Had a great drive in it with the roof down today. Can see why the Boxster was such a hit when it was released. Definitely glad I picked it over an Mx5 ( so far).

  16. Hello all,

I have just recently purchased my first ever Porsche, a 2.7 from 2003 with just over 70k miles. Out of the ones I looked it was definitely in the best condition and looked most looked after ( will come to this bit later). Also I have extremely basic DIY skills unfortunately and some technical knowledge but not extensive.

Got a few questions and things I noticed:

    1) Anyone recommended a good workshop manual?

    2) Best place for parts and service items?

    3) Every now and then but not all the times I get a single beep when locking. I notice the fuel cap never locks itself. Could this be the cause?

    4) Very occasionally when I start it I get a small short whine after the engine has fired which I believe is the starter still slightly engaged on the flywheel, would this be an expensive fix?

5)I cleared out the front section near the battery. It had stacks of debris in there which I was surprised with as the battery was only replaced in 2020 by (according to a receipt) water damage. I would have thought the owner would have since kept the drains clear. To actually clear the drain is the trombone wire maybe to aggressive or should I look for a more gentle way to clear the drain line some strimmer wire?

6)This the back box that was replaced on it a few years ago by previous owner. Can’t see a name on it, all I found was it cost £395. It makes a fantastic sound which I love but gauging by seeing people turning round suddenly when I put the slightest throttle on I’m wondering if it’s too loud ( could exhaust be blowing). Does anyone have a similar style exhaust and is it pretty loud?
