I changed the steering wheel!  My car had the button PDK wheel, and I never liked the look or the button function that much. I was looking for a replacement with Sport Design wheel, and when one became available used, I bought it. I was contemplating wether to have the OPC or Indy do the work, but in the end after watching a few YT videos decided to do it myself. It was quite simple and took only like 15 minutes. All well and paddles work, but it's not 100% straight (I made a mark in it, but missed my logic) so I have to take it apart tomorrow to straighten it.

The new wheel not only looks better, but the slightly smaller diameter and thickness make it feel a lot sportier and better. The paddles are quite nice too, makes shifting manually with the PDK a pleasure.

Looks good but you’ve fitted on the wrong side of the car

Thanks all.  There has been some excellent information here.

I had decided (almost) that 2.9 Manual was the way to go and this is making me think I was right..for once.

I can well remember back in 2014 buying my 986 2.7, 2 owner 71k miles FSH and reading more and more scary stories and the old Porsche paranoia started to creep in.  After 2 days it went to PCT for a service and inspection.  I then spent 7 years burning through all the consumable items, tuning forks, coffin arms, radiators, water pump, ignition switch, alternator, exhaust bolts, coils....but it never actauly let me down!  Still the IMS thing was always there....much as I knew deep down that it was an old car with high miles so if it was going to let go it would have done already...probably

Interestingly in some ways I preferred the 2.7 to the 3.2 as it liked to rev so gave the feeling  of a more spirited drive even though it was a bit slower!

I think you’re right about the 2.9 manual. Beyond the engine reliability items we’re talking about here,  manual means greater engagement (and less exposure to a very expensive failure as with a PDK) and I agree the 2.9 might be better suited to British roads and need a bit more right foot (and therefore a nicer sound?) where a 3.4 would barely get out of 3rd gear

Bore scoping is flawed as it begins at the base of cylinder which is covered by the bottom bit of the pistons.

They don’t fully pop out at BDC and it’s this bit you need to look at .

How ever plenty of folks ready to empty wallets by looking at the wrong end(s) of the cylinders for you FWIW ?

The ticking ( if any ) is the base of the piston skirt oscillating in that lower area of the bore because it’s ovalised     .As it’s lost it lining unequally and gone oval slightly. But the piston is still round so it rattles , rotates away from its pin .

    £15/16 K buys you a sub 100k miler 987.2  .

Skip all this future anxiety and go straight for a 2.9 .

Adding another layer of why 2.9 over 3.4 is the injection system .

DFI found in the 3.4 and all cars from 2013 has an Achilles heal .It’s carbonised intake valves from low temp , cold runs and labouring .

The 2.9 is not direct injection it’s port injection so carbonisation is a none event , off the radar .The fuel is mixed with the air Before it enters the cylinder.

With DFI in theory up to temps it delivers more power and lower emissions. How ever as said in day to day U.K. cold weather short traffic journeys carbonisation happens because the cylinder temp are low or with labouring excess fuel is unburnt and carbon sticks to the open intake valve .The valve timing being sequential means due to overlap carbon gets out and clogs the underside of the stems .

Obviously back in the day 09-12 buying new with warranty or a PCP / lease whereby the  punter simply chucked it back after 36 months 36 K miles nobody gave a t*ss to DFI carbonisation.I get that = go for a 3.4 sure .

Fast Fwds a decade and the goal posts have moved .Cars will be 60-120 K dropped out of main dealer networks part SH and so forth .

The risk analysis or lowering your chance of big bills looms large .

I went through it all back in April and ended up with a 87K 09: 2.9.

6 speed vs PDK is another roll of dice .Personally as a recreational ( read max involvement ) I opted for the 6 sp man .

If it’s a PDK you have your sights ( city driving / health mobility re arms / legs issues etc ) then the SH is more important .

Good luck in the hunt .

Our of interest, what is the impact of DFI carbonisation if ignored? Are we talking complete engine failure?

Is the carbonisation something that can be managed through maintenance? If so, what would one need to look out for to ensure the engine has been properly maintained ?

    “Hartech engine rebuild”?

2005 and 2006 model years of the 987.1 are 2.7 and 3.2 versions of the M96 engine. 2007 and 2008 model years of the 987.1 are 2.7 and 3.4 versions of the M97 engine.  These 3.4 versions are where bore score is mostly found.  Counter measures are you allow slower warming up (don't thrash it when cold) and a low temp thermostat to get the cooling system flowing at full capacity before heat builds too much in the engine.

987.2 has the 9A1 engine (2.9 and 3.4) which is a completely different design with no IMS and other architecture changes.

Ah I really didn’t know about that (that the 987.1 engine sized moved from 3.2 to 3.4). Thank you for correcting me.

  6. Welcome. I think you might have your engine sizes/comments on bore scoring mixed up.

    for avoidance of doubt:

    2.7/3.2 are Gen 1

    2.9/3.4 are Gen 2

Only gen 1 susceptible to scoring

your budget should reach a 2.9 gen 2, which  I would recommend as newer and less prone to issue

I had a very similar colour combo 3.4s and can attest that the red interior doesn’t photograph well compared to seeing it in the flesh.

it was more of an ox-blood red than it looks in the photos and made for a great contrast to the black body work. The silver wheels helped as well imho.

it’s not unique but it’s quite unusual on the market - some will love it, others will hate it, but it didn’t prevent me selling it pretty quickly when I needed to. I’d say go for it!

As others have said, you can tone it down a bit with selected black parts like the steering wheel, gearknob etc - I had black mats which were more practical and a bit less red, but I loved it and got lots of positive comments about it

That looks lovely. I think red with black exterior works really well.

Have you checked out some of the cars for sale in the for sale section? I'd be tempted to at least have a good look as members cars on forums are generally a better deal and their history known by members of the forum.

Yes, good idea. Will keep an eye out. I can see there is a For Sale section here on BoXa.net. Are there any other UK based member sites you’d recommend?

Overrev info can be pulled from the car with a durametric or a Porsche PIWIS.  i would expect a ppi to generate that for you and if the supplying dealer has any Porsche “specialism” they should be able to do it as well

I am not surprised that silverstone Porsche won’t share service info with someone who doesn’t own the car.

there’s a few other cars around for a bit more cash. More. 2.9 than S but have a look at mortimers and cridfords for a few examples.

Thank you. I’d mostly ruled out the 2.9 in favour of the 3.4 for a bit more noise and speed, but I wonder if I should revisit that decision.

I suspect the 2.9 is plenty fast enough for my needs. And maybe if anything might make a nicer noise as it will need to be revved harder.

im sure the 2.9 vs 3.4 discussion has probably been done to death so I’ll search the forum, but would love to hear any opinions here? (Apologies for going OT)

Not sure about the Boxster seats but the various AMG's and my current Lexus RCF has ventilated seats and I love them.

I'm guessing someone has done a check to see the outstanding finance, my RS60 had outstanding finance when I bought it, I just transferred part of the money to VW finance and the rest to the seller, it's not that much of a frig really.

The possibility of over-revs may be more of a concern and the fact it wasn't available and still isn't available was my main concern. As far as I know only an OPC can provide that, but I could be wrong.

It's very red inside including the dials so if you are a fan of heavy metal blasting that out at full volume along with the red inside may cause blood pressure to rise.

Thanks. Agree it looks very red. Would like to see it in the flesh, it’s perhaps not my first choice colour but it is certainly unique.

non-OPC companies can definitely look at the ECU as part of a PPI. But as has been said here, the fact information isn’t forthcoming perhaps says enough

I've been to see this car and offered £21K, apart from the fact it has a useless number plate there are a few scratches on the front wings, it looks like an ape may have changed the battery because that looks to be how the scratches occurred.

I tried to find the over-rev printout amongst the service documents and could not find it and Silverstone Porsche have so far refused to supply the info for over a week (not sure if this should be a red flag) Also the exhaust should be valved and is not so as nice as it is it will annoy any close neighbours you may have.

As others have said outstanding finance, I thought it was worth £21K as a project car purely for the ventilated seats.

Thanks. I suspected it was too good to be true. Shame really as the spec is nice, and has some rare options like the ventilated seats (has anyone actually tried these? Do they work?)

I wonder if it might be worth chancing a PPI to get a true sense of any problems and whether it has been over revved or not

    Hi and welcome,

Look in the Classified Finds section of Boxster Chat.  Quite a few people on here trawl the ads from various places and post the interesting ones, whether for good or bad reasons.

As an aside, I see your ride is a BMW C1, that's a rarity.

Ha. Auto-correct fail. Have adjusted to a much less exciting reality.

And thank you for mentioning the classifieds.

  13. Hi there,

I’ve seen this 987.2 Boxster S for sale and like the look and spec of it. I’ve been saving for years to complete a goal of owning a Porsche, so want to make sure the car is right and well maintained (although I appreciate that is true for any car purchase).

    http://www.4starclassics.com/for-sale/porsche-987-boxster-s-for-sale/

From sorting by “date added” on Piston Heads, the car is the last but one and so has clearly been listed for a while, which is concerning. I was wondering if anyone can spot an obvious reason for this that I’m missing?

I wonder if It might be the red interior which i know could best be described as “marmite” (I personally quite like it).

Any help and advice appreciated :)
