  1. PU, makes sense,  almost impossible to fix, very Porsche ! Also makes sense that the Mitre glue works,  I think that is PU, albeit expanding,  thanks for the help...

  2. Hi,

Does anybody know what type of plastic the Front Bumper is made of ? I've got two screw holes that need filling before I fit my new stick-on number plate, but want to get the correct type of filler/adhesive ...ABS or PP, or something else ? I've had a good look and can't see any marking that gives me a clue, some other plastic parts are labelled with PP, but I don't know about the Bumper,  any help is most appreciated...

  3. Hi Hainesy,

I did something very similar to what you are thinking,  although it was on a 987.2.

The tweeters are just connected in parallel with the other speakers,  on close inspection of the tweeters they have a 4.7uf capacitor in series,  this in effect is the high-pass filter. Ther is no separate crossover unit.

I changed mine for Focal TAM units, using all the existing wiring but used a 10uf capacitor due to the difference in the tweeters performance. I also 3D printed new mounts for the tweeters,  as they are just a big bigger than the originals.

The Focal speakers sound great so it was a good modification.

  4. It's used as the phone main speaker when paired with the phone, so for me I need it, it does get used when the main speakers are in use but as others have said you would not notice if you disconnect it, I think I'm just disappointed with the OEM speaker and want one that I do like the sound of, as you say "personal preference "

  5. Well I narrowed down to 8 potential speakers, but 1 was too big, the other too small, so I'm down to just 6. All have great datasets, but how do they sound and compare,  so I made a box with all 6 in and I can switch between then to find what I like the best.

My center speaker is used for the sat-nav and so I can't disconnect it, it's all connected up now so should have results soon.IMG_20240420_124314_137.thumb.jpg.c565410712bc19894fbb91b67bd18c45.jpg

  6. I've never been too happy with the front number plate, the back it fixes on to, is smaller than the plate and the plate then sticks just over the leading edge of the nose. I had a couple of options;

    1) I got a backing plate of a 981, slightly different size but 'could' be made to fit better.

    2) make an entirely new one.

    3) use an adhesive vinyl one.

So my question is , has anyone used a vinyl number plate and did you have any problems?

    Thanks...

  7. I changed mine to yellow bulbs for the fog lights, much better for actual fog and rain.  They were difficult to get, ended up getting them from a website in Canada,  don't seem popular in the UK?

  8. I think when you get a sat-nav info/message/phone etc the audio to the main speakers is dimmed down and the centre speaker comes into play, so I'd probably like to keep it, just need a better one than the stock porsche rubbish.

  9. I've upgraded my main speakers to Focal, it has transformed the sound, the Porsche speakers (ASK) were the cheapest, rubbish speakers.  Anyway I've decided to change the centre speaker too, but not sure what to go for, has anyone changed this speaker and if so for what? I plan to test several types to see what 'sounds' best and matches the Focal mains.....

  10. Very interesting,  urban myth or not, I can see once the 'myth' gets out, it becomes a game for the small minded to casually / skilfully throw their lighted cigarette in to a porsche and set fire to the paper air filter.  I'm sure it must have happened, the small minded do like to create trouble. Perhaps that too is a good reason for leaving the baffle in, if you drive in town / City with people around your car, it adds protection against idiots. Although smoking and cigarettes are not that common anymore. I took mine out....

  11. The data logging I did was on a stock car with the baffle removed, it was so I could see if my home made inlets would actually be worth it. I don't have any data with the snorkel removed,  not a viable option in my opinion. As for the 'noise' that is complicated as it comes from many sources, the snorkel does have a nice radius on the inlet and an increasing CSA before connecting to the airbox.  Normally in a constant CSA pipe the pressure goes from high to low, in the 987 snorkel the shape blends in at the air inlet, (trumpeted very good) reducing turbulence and making nice flow, this does reduce the noise that turbulence would cause, noise takes energy to produce,  remove turbulence,  reduce noise, use less energy ( all very good), the greater CSA at the airbox end, 'almost' compensates for the pressure loss, by slightly increasing the pressure whilst 'calming' the air, ready for the airbox (plenum). It is a very common 'technique' for this type of NA inlet. The baffle has no measurably effect on the pressure,  its purpose is to reduce sand, dust rain & moisture from getting to the filter, it's a very good design,  up to you if you remove it. If you live in Saudi, a rain forest or travel a lot on the motorway in the rain, with cars and lorries making spray....I'd leave it in..

  12. Before I did my new inlet flange I fitted a pressure data logger to the air inlet. I logged the pressure for nearly 200 miles at speeds upto 130mph. The pressure was always above ambient,  never below, the inlet apature and the design is actually very clever, as an engineer working in fluid dynamics for over 25 years ,  I can confirm that "Porsche do know what they're doing".

There is a slight increase in pressure above ambient over 60mph, but nothing significant until you get over 120mph, the inlet design is very well considered and does benefit from the snorkel and airbox, it all works together. The baffle, for me is optional,  others may need it....

As for the scoops, I doubt the small increase in engine power from ram air will offset the increase in drag from any additional scoops ....and only at very high speeds.

I think it is all down to the way they look. If you like them, fit them, they won't do any harm..

  13. Very nice of you to say so, thanks,  but I've no plans (at the moment) to sell these, I made them as I was removing the baffle (for me, I don't need it, others may need it). The snorkel was tapping on the holder for the baffle so rather than just putting a foam packer on the end I made a new inlet, it helped too with the flow in to the snorkel whilst keeping the other aspects of the design intact. I doubt it will have any significant impact on performance,  just a little bit, but it does sound better.

  14. I made my own replacement for the baffle,  it's 3D printed from TPU (hard rubber like) has the 'ribbed' flange to press fit in and most importantly a radius input for better flow. It also allowed a closed cell foam strip to be fitted that stopped the snorkel from rattling..

  15. This weekend I was removing the door cards so I can upgrade the stock ASK speakers (they are rubbish), in taking off the trim just above the door , I disengaged the two clips at the base, but broke off the tiny little retaining bit at the very top. It doesn't look like it can be easily replaced, unless someone knows different,  I could glue it back on, but not sure it will glue easily, any ideas or advise,

  16. Hi, I had exactly the same tyres as you but in the other way round.  The Goodyear F1, understeered at low speeds, (rounderbouts etc) my biggest issue was if I left the car in the garage for 2-3 weeks, the tyres would develop a flat spot, it went away, but took a few miles. I got rid of them after about 4k miles,  and changed to PS2, never had a flat spot and no understeer.  Have got a set of conti winter tyres are they are great. All 17". So kind of the opposite experience to yourself, but tyres are about feel and confidence,  and individual style of driving,  and ...availability!!

  17. I thought the 987 sort of 'adjusted' it's self anyway,  compensating for different fuels etc. So if you change a throttle body for instance,  does it not just adjust for the bigger butterfly?

  18. Hi, I use the Autoglym fabric hood cleaner and protector,  not every time I clean the car but every 2 or 3, keeps the hood clean from sap, bird poo, traffic dirt, the protection certainly lasts to the next time I use it. I have a 50 year old MGB, obviously it is not a daily runner these days, but the fabric and the external stitching is in very good condition having used the same clean & protection method. Just me, but if I'd had a expensive protector applied,  I'd then be worried about washing the car for concern that I'd rub it off, so I just keep it clean and apply the Autoglym stuff, as the ads say, this "works for me", not everyone has the same time or environment...
