Yep, you’re right, 4A current. And as most devices only pull full current when they are low on charge, it’s unlikely you’d be pulling the 4A anyway.

However, I’ve seen warnings posted on other forums about “cheap” cigarette socket chargers that claim to be “fast charge”. They achieve this ramping up the voltage at the start, so the over voltage charges your phone quicker (which is why your phone gets warm at this stage). I’m not saying that yours has a dodgy regulator in it, but if it does blow the fuse again it might be worth swapping for a lower wattage version.

    Thanks, that's really useful.

This is the charger that I'm using:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/AINOPE-Charger-Adaptor-Charging-Macbook/dp/B07KTW6ZYQ/ref=rvi_6/257-4837806-8451760?pd_rd_w=meUaz&pf_rd_p=c887f1a6-d9cb-496b-95d2-a2ea3c76e676&pf_rd_r=0VY3G12NR5JFDAPGFVBY&pd_rd_r=50b0a0e0-ecef-4bc1-8cdd-03e0ee19227b&pd_rd_wg=5INzG&pd_rd_i=B07KTW6ZYQ&psc=1

I'll realistically only ever use the PD port (30W/2.5A) and my iPhone will apparently only take 27W anyway, which takes the load down a little further. The 48W rating refers to both ports being used at once.

This is a new charger, not the one that was possibly the cause of the fuse blowing previously.

A phone charger shouldn’t pull more than 2-3 amps I think, so should be fine.

    Thanks.

I've just checked the new charger that I've bought and it is rated at 48w (30w for one USB outlet and 18w for the other), so that would just about get up to 4 amps with both outlets fully used., if I'm calculating it correctly? My old ones were far less powerful, so probably more like 2 amps.

It looks as though the only way I'd be in trouble is if I got two of the current chargers on the 12V outlets and charged four devices as once, reaching 8 watts. That will never happen, but I suppose it's something think about as these chargers get ever more powerful.

According to this they are different fuses. Row A fuse 8 for the sockets and fuse 10 for the cigarette lighter

    http://forums.pelicanparts.com/boxster-cayman-forum/960195-fuse-987-frunk-light.html

Thanks. It's the 7.5A fuse at A8 that has been causing me the problems, the cigarette lighter works fine.

I've bought some more new fuses now and it seems to have fixed it, so perhaps I was swapping in a blown or faulty fuse yesterday!

Thinking about it again, I seem to remember that I've had this same problem before in the past - a new fuse ha got it working again only for it to blow shortly afterwards. I'll keep an eye on it.

I only occasionally use a phone charger on these sockets, so I don't think that should be too much?

  4. The two 12V sockets on my 987 haven't worked for a while, and I just assumed that it was a blown fuse.

I finally got around to replacing the fuse today, but the sockets still don't work.

It's not a big issue as I've still got the cigarette lighter socket, but it would be handy to have all of them working.

Has anyone else has this problem?

  5. I can't help on the cost unfortunately, but I'm surprised that the current paint is easy to damage. Do you think it has been resprayed in the past or does it still have factory paint?

I've actually found mine relatively good. Last week, I slightly lost balance getting out of the car and smashed the corner of my laptop into the rear wing! I was obviously annoyed with myself, but also impressed to see that an impact like that caused what looks like a small stone chip with no associated dent. On some cars I've had previously, it would have caused much serious damage.

Mine is 16 years old now and has picked up quite a few marks despite being low mileage and garaged, but I still think that it has worn quite well.

Is Porsche paint and metal generally known as being quite hardwearing or not? Perhaps Ive just had bad cars in the past!

That's a good price.  I just did all of mine, myself and parts alone were £410.

Edit - Oh front only 😆

It was front only from that Indy, but I ended up getting all four done for almost the same price in the end at torqueboxsters.co.uk.

I'm not particularly technically-minded, so I wasn't planning to do the job myself, but I probably would have taken it on if I'd had to have paid £1,200 to get it done!

Is that £660 at a porsche Indy or a general garage?

It was a Porsche Indy, but the quote was a mistake in the end and was only for the front brakes so I didn't take it up.

I finally got the brakes done yesterday by a member on here - @TROOPER88who runs www.torqueboxsters.co.uk in Sunbury, Surrey.

I can definitely recommend, he's really knowledgeable on these cars, offered me a choice of any of the OEM brand discs/pads and fitted me in at very short notice. All four discs and pads were replaced for a price very close that what the other Indys wanted just for the fronts.

£660 isn't a bad fitted price as costing up on Autodoc you are looking at about £450-500 in parts if you include wear sensors to do all round with Brembo/Textar parts.  At about an hour an axle so £80-90 a hour on top to get to the £660.

Yes, it sounded about right to me, that's what I'd been hoping to pay. They are fitting Srebo/Textar.

I'm still not sure why all of the others were so expensive - all busy I guess so don't need the work.

Would you mind me asking what your quote is for the brakes? Is it for all 4 discs and pads?

    Sorry, I missed your message.

My best quote is £660 for discs and pads. All of the rest of the Indys were over £1k, and one of them was £1.4k which was approaching the OPCs £1.9k quote.

I'm going to call to book it in tomorrow, but if there are any problems (or if that is just for one pair!) then I'll have to reluctantly go to a local place I know and will supply parts myself.

  10. Thanks all.

I was getting tempted to have a go at the brakes myself as all of the quotes were well in excess of £1k, but I've got a much better quote now, so I'll probably go with that.

I'm assuming that the Srebo discs and Textar pads are a reasonable bet? I've been searching on here and all seem to get some good and some bad comments, but these to to fare quite well overall.

The good news is that the aircon is still feeling nice and cold, so I'll save that job for another time!

I tend not to do much work on cars myself but found the saving on the brakes was worth it - buying direct from Design 911. I did need an impact wrench to take the front calipers off though. If you don’t fancy fitting yourself perhaps you could find an independent garage who would fit the parts you provided.

    Thanks.

The things that I don't understand about the brakes is the true difference between genuine Porsche and OEQ/OEM parts. I've heard reports that they are the same without the branding and others that they are vastly inferior.

Design 911 just do OEQ ones, which is fine, but how do I tell if these are good or bad OEQ parts?

These big bills can be a shock but think about how long you’ve had the car and the total you’ve spent on maintenance. Bet you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the monthly figure 👍🏻.

    Cheers

    Rory

Absolutely. It's just getting lulled into a false sense of security - taking it in each service and nothing serious to fix.

The car is a long term keep (and was always going to be) so will definitely get everything it needs.

How handy are you with the spanners? I wouldn't about the oil misting between engine an box, if it starts to drip then consider doing it. Other than that the remaining things are all DIY-able. If not I believe EPorsche are up your way. Brakes all round will be a quarter of OPC prices if not less. Aircon condensor...leaving it won't increase costs, you'll have to get the remaining gas professionally removed anyway 👍

Thanks. I'm not at all handy with the spanners, unfortunately!

I've given Eporsch a call so will see what they say on the brakes. I've used GT-One in the past and they've been great, but not really that much cheaper than OPC.

Where are you based ? Folks might be able to recommend options other than OPC if that helps re costs.

Re 4) do you drive the car after washing it ?

I'd say in general these cars liked to be used rather than sat around.

Based on SW London/Surrey border, but prepared to travel.

I don't always run the car directly after washing it, so that could definitely explain some of the disc corrosion. The car is garaged, so doesn't need to be washed that often, but does sit around quite a lot - hence the mileage.

I'm wondering if that also explains some of the other corrosion (springs, shocks etc.) or if that is just the age of the car.

  15. I've owned my 2005 987.1S for 11 years, and it's family owned from new.

I've taken good care of it, and it's very low mileage at 35k and bills so far have been very low (new front springs, water pump/belt and gear linkage are all that I've had).

It's just in for it's 16 year (!) service and there are quite a few advisories this time, and I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice.

    1. A small hole in the aircon condenser - is this a priority to do now (given all of the other work required)? The aircon still works now, will it deteriorate quickly, and (more importantly) cause any other damage?

    2. There is an oil leak between the engine and gearbox that OPC advises will require gearbox removal to fix. Even they say this one is not urgent (grade 2 'misting' out of 5 on their scale) but I'm a bit worried about leaving it too long!

3.Shock absorbers totally rotten at bottom and exhaust fixings showing real corrosion damage. There seems to be quite a lot of corrosion in general under there (front springs rotted through a few yers ago), but I guess that is just the age of the car? It's garaged and low mileage, but I suppose this always happens sooner or later?

    4. All four brake discs are completely shot on the back-sides, again due to corrosion. This is obviously an urgent one, but I think I'll be shopping around a bit on OPCs £1,900 quote!

Any advice appreciated whilst I ready the credit card!
