@MenoporscheThanks. That is a good next step. I can't see it being anything but aircon as the screen wash it to the brim and the puddle is clear. I put white paper down to see if there was any pink tinge and the paper is still white. Also the drip stops after a while

Hi all...as requested an update. Car was at the workshop over the weekend and there was no leakage at all. I picked it up and drove it last night. Now there is a very large pool of water under it. Water is clear so I assume it is from the aircon drain, however it is coming from the undertray just inboard of the near side front wheel. Could it be that the aircon drain is misaligned and water is collecting and then draining out? I have not seen this before on either my 986 or previous 987?
As a precaution I have heeded the advice here and fitted an upgraded expansion tank cap ending .04

I will update, I hate unfinished threads too! Car is booked in Friday, just to add to the irritation, there is no sign of a leak tonight. I have had a good feel around the pipe work behind the wheel and dry as a bone.

Again thanks all! I am so lucky that the car has a 6month no quibble warranty from the supplying dealer and that said dealer's associated workshop is not too far away from home.
All the advice has been useful, I have learned some new trouble spots too, I had no idea about the coolant pipes for instance!

OK...new update...just been out the garage and it is sat in a pool of water and is dripping from inboard of the near side front wheel.

Thanks for all the feedback, excellent as ever. Car has been back to workshops and the cooling system has been pressure tested. All seems fine. I have also ordered an updated to expansion tank cap. Just need to put some miles on it now and see if all ok now.
-
@skoosh1970 I have never heard of porous pipe before. How did you narrow it down to that?
-
Just had a look at the cap it ends .01. Will get a new one ordered asap. Thanks all for the advice!

Thanks Paul good advice!

No mayo.
It is going in on Monday but I am a massive pessimist and fear the worst

Thanks for reply That's what they said when they filled it up last time...now it has gone way below the minumum after a spirited 400 miles at the weekend around north Wales. It was filled from well below the minimum last time...

Hi All...
I have a 2006 987S which has lost enough coolant to take it below the minumum, a month ago it was topped up due to low coolant warning. Cross pipes were done a few weeks ago, no sign of drips, no condensation on under side of boot....are we thinking head gasket/cylinder head or am I letting the paranoia get to me?
Just to add some detail about the car. Bought from JR motors Coventry in July. Standard of prep was second to none in terms of presentation, refurbed wheels, new tyres, headlights polished. However, it needed starter motor (failed the night we got it home), front radiator crossover pipes (was sat in a puddle on day 2), exhaust then blew (usual flange bolts) and finally squeaky suspension (coffin arm) and now coolant issue. In fairness the car is covered by 6 month warranty and there have been no quibbles about fixing anything at all.

Hi All...thanks for the replies. To end the thread, I am picking up a 2006 987 S Gen 1 on Wed, so well and truly back in the fold. It is Arctic silver, blue interior with crested sports seats. Someone has already added a car play head unit so that is one less job. I did look at a 2.9 Gen 2 but I could not overlook the price difference so went for the earlier car, has a full set of stamps, only 48k on the clock. Judging by the condition of the hood it seems to have lived in a garage for its whole life.

@boxerboy There are some interesting points there! Totally agree on the point about handling. For me the Boxster is the perfect blend of performance and handling for the typical roads in the UK. Having no roof just adds to the even! The Mini JCW I have at the moment is fun and compact but is all about boost and that detracts from the drive as there is no need to rev it out. Also it has a roof. That said it covers the ground and is very economical.

Thanks all. There has been some excellent information here.
I had decided (almost) that 2.9 Manual was the way to go and this is making me think I was right..for once.
I can well remember back in 2014 buying my 986 2.7, 2 owner 71k miles FSH and reading more and more scary stories and the old Porsche paranoia started to creep in. After 2 days it went to PCT for a service and inspection. I then spent 7 years burning through all the consumable items, tuning forks, coffin arms, radiators, water pump, ignition switch, alternator, exhaust bolts, coils....but it never actauly let me down! Still the IMS thing was always there....much as I knew deep down that it was an old car with high miles so if it was going to let go it would have done already...probably
Interestingly in some ways I preferred the 2.7 to the 3.2 as it liked to rev so gave the feeling of a more spirited drive even though it was a bit slower!

Ah I really didn’t know about that (that the 987.1 engine sized moved from 3.2 to 3.4). Thank you for correcting me.
Thanks for the input...having had 2 Boxsters before I am well versed in the models and engines. Every day is a school day so if someone learns something from a thread like this then it's a win!

Light on spec - but pretty - no affiliation with dealer other than previous and current car came from them ( and a number of folks on here have bought from them)

That looks really nice! My daughter thinks this is the best colour too. Thanks!!

Funnily enough I am going to look at that one at the weekend

Thanks for reply.
Colour...ideally not silver or Seal grey. Last 2 were Seal grey. Can't have a 'yellow' interior!
I am not really bothered about spec though both previous cars had extended leather and Bose which I liked. Sport Seats would be nice. Budget around £16k.

Hi All....I was a happy 986 owner for 7 years and then bought a lovely 987 3.2 which was written off by a careless van driver pulling out of a side road and pushing me down a back into trees. Every single panel bar the boot lid had some damage. I needed a car for work so bought a Mini JCW which is great fun but no Boxster and makes the Mrs feel car sick at speed. It's days are numbered...especially as I am now 100% home based.
So...am looking to get into a 987 3.2 or 2.9.
I have discounted the 3.4 Gen 1 as my local specialist refuses to sell them...It is JR Motors in Coventry who seem to turn over a large number of nicely turned out 987s. Has anyone had any dealings with them?
Re 3.4 I know the advice is Bore scope etc...but I have always wondered...if the scope shows no issues, what is to stop the bore scoring developing later?
I have also found this:
Used Porsche Boxster "S" 3.2 for sale | PistonHeads UK
At 32000 miles is it best avoided for 'too low' mileage or is it something to consider?
As ever all help greatfully appreciated...even if it is 'buy the one you like' 😆

@TROOPER88 the guy had look at it was 100% it was the evaporator! Sounds like you have worked bloody hard on this. Funnily enough my ‘new’ 987s has no aircon at the moment either 🤣
-
@Trooper88 Is is all back together yet?

Bought a 987s in Seal grey to replace 986 2.7 in Seal grey. Best colour😀
986 will be for sale soon will list here, too hot to clean and hoover to take pics

Hahahahaha...it is a lot of nuts and bolts! I would not have the time to set aside for a job of that magnitude, playing with cars is in competition with many other activities (mainly involving horses) and at the moment it is my daily driver having handed company car back. I think it can sit on the back burner for now...I'll just keep the roof down!
987S Coolant Loss
in 987
Posted
You are correct...the car has twice lost enough coolant to drop it below the level of the minimum marker. I am now going to drive it a lot and see if the coolant level stays constant.
This seems to be a separate watery issue. As you say it could be the drains...but the car has been in garage for 3 days since it last got wet and had not dropped any liquid during that period.
