When I bought mine the owner had put tyres on it called ‘Sunny’ to get it through the m.o.t as he was selling it.

After driving it home and nearly rupturing my eardrums I put on 4 new Michelin’s N3’s and what a transformation.

Did someone mention Sunny tyres? Welcome to my world 🤣. Just prior to me purchasing my Boxster, the previous owner did the same and had Sunny tyres fitted on the rear and now 6 years later they are still there. Never noticed them to be loud but they do slide around a lot and that is just in the dry🤣.

Please don't propagate the drivel fed to you by your idiotic government and the equally stupid media. Spain is still far safer than the UK.

Exactly, apart from a couple of regions in the north, most of Spain has quite low infection rates. Andalucia, for example, just 8 infections per 100,000 population.

Sounds like a corroded sleeve joint between the U bend and the cat perhaps. I failed an MoT on emissions when I had a leak there. Fairly easy to change and you can buy suitable joint on eBay for not too much rather than paying £££ for the OE parts.

Thanks for that, hopefully that is where the fault is as does not sound too bad a job. Will take a closer look when I get the car jacked up. I think mine technically should have failed but the tester liked the 4000rpm lambda figure (never been asked to rev it that much before🤔) and passed it.

  4. MOT(ITV) passed this afternoon. As per previous two times it struggled on the emissions, namely the lambda at 2000 rpm. Should be under 1,03 and mine was 1,06 with engine and cats etc scalding hot. The tester then stuck a rag in the exhaust, which helped it pass last two times but still did not come under about 1,055. He then asked me to rev it at 4000 rpm and the value then fell below the limit and he was satisfied. Not sure if this is normal procedure or not? He told me whilst under the car he observed a leak in the exhaust due to corrosion at one of the bends near the back box and that this would be the reason for the emissions problem. Not had a look yet myself but am curious if this is a common place for corrosion and if it could maybe be repaired?

Sounds an ideal location for Boxster ownership, good luck with the MOT

It really is! Only ever driven the road once before and that was in the ML55, still a great drive but with quite some body lean going on in the bends🤣.

Thanks, hoping my Boxster pre MOT work pays off!

  6. Drove it like I stole it for once.

The “mot” is due on Tuesday and the last two times it has struggled a bit with emissions, due to lack of use, short runs and old fuel. Decided to have a bit of a run out today with new fuel and injector cleaner. Loaded 5x8ltr empty water bottles into the boot (nice snug fit) and set off for a half hour drive to Monda where you can fill up from a natural spring - good way to help offset the fuel costs.
Took a different way home via Guaro and decided to head for Yunquera which at 2500feet, is the highest town in Malaga province. The road there is just incredible and really tests out the handling of the car and the driver (actually the car makers test out a lot of new models in the area and you can often see them, also is popular with classic car clubs etc and saw several nice motors on the way up today). Was one of the best drives ever and the beer at Yunquera was very welcome in the 33c heat. Am hoping this will have cleared a few cobwebs out and help with the emissions on Tuesday. Wish I had got some pics. Will do next time, as will do it again, when I need more drinking water.

  7. Drove it, after fitting the new battery, oil, oil filter, air filter and power steering fluid top up. Starts so much better now and positively jumps into life. Placebo effect going ten to the dozen and everything felt better - even the clutch was lighter lol. The engine though, definitely feels smoother (especially on start up) with the new Elf oil, compared to the previous Shell Helix.

  8. Well that is that done and topped up. With nothing at all showing on the dipstick, I was expecting to have to put in quite a lot but it actually only needed 50-60ml to get the level to the mark. Can’t have been all that low then and likely explains why there were no unusual sounds etc. Next time I am in the area, I will drain the system and replace all the fluid, as looks a fairly straight forward job and I’ll bet the fluid in my car is original 20 year old stuff!

Buy from OPC the correct power steering fluid its actually cheaper than most other places and you know its correct, it won't do your pump any good running it with low fluid but if it was that low you would hear a horrible noise coming from the front so your probably ok, but get it topped up.

Or local VW garage if that's closer

Thanks for the advice chaps. Before read them, I dropped in by a local motor factor and they advised me that Iada Servo-Tex was compatible with my car, so I bought 0,5 litres for €9.  I have since googled and it is recommended for Porsche and also VW Audi group vehicles. Will top up this afternoon.

  10. Had a productive evening in the garage and just finished now. Fitted a new Varta 80Ah battery, it was pretty much identical to the old Bosch one. I checked the production code (from the YouTube video) whilst in the shop and was pleased to see it was manufactured a little earlier this year. Glad I rummaged to the back of the shelf, as the one at the front was more than 2 years old. Added bonus as they were doing 15% off all Varta batteries. Also bought 10ltrs of Elf 5w40 oil and an oil filter and air filter from the dealer and I changed the lot. Nearly 2 years since the last oil change and a massive 1700km done (which equates to about 170 trips to the supermarket lol). The oil filter was spotless again thankfully, and no sign of any metallic, or any other kind of particles.

I bought the oil and battery in Carrefour and was nearly buying the 10w40 oil as it is half the price (€50 for 10lts compared to €100 for 10ltrs of 5w40). I reckon the hot climate here would mean the 10w40 would be fine, as my car never sees temperatures below 15C. I chickened out at the last minute but maybe I go for the cheaper stuff next time?

As it was a rare visit to the engine bay to fit the air filter, I thought this time I should check the power steering fluid, never checked it in 6 years, and only recently found out there was a reservoir in there! Could not see anything on the dipstick at the 20c cold level? My garage was 30c this evening but should still have seen something? Anyone else had similarly low power steering fluid level and is it harmful to the car? I will go back to the dealer again tomorrow and see if they will sell me 0,5 ltrs of transmission fluid. A while ago they sold me some transmission fluid, so you never know?

Look forward to a drive out tomorrow and to see how it starts, as it has been struggling a bit of late.

  11. If it is just that one area of the one wheel, it makes you wonder if there was maybe something up with the paint that went there, or something not rubbed off? Not even my diy rattle can spray job on my alloys, with no primer and straight on top of what was already there, has ended up flaking at all!

Replaced the fuel filter... Urghhh what a horrible job. Lying on my back with hardly any access due to the location in the middle of the underside.

Filter was the original dated November 98, with 115000 miles. Somewhat over the specified 48000 mile replacement schedule.

Plenty of brown crud came out!

I should have a look at doing this to my car, as I suspect mine has never been changed either. Does it have really awkward clip things to deal with?

As an aside apart from Meno's and the first post I am 99% sure all the spoilers posted are in fact the same. A few year back there used to be 1 or 2 UK sellers and a couple from Poland. I'm also pretty sure they bought off Alibaba to resell.

Yes I think you are correct. Some of them offered 3 choices. Unpainted, painted or carbon fibre effect.

Both our spoilers are the same, they are fibre glass and available painted or unpainted. I would recommend buying it in primer and getting it properly matched as the colour was off on mine.

I think I originally saw these on eBay but ordered it direct. If you google Cayman style spoiler for 986 you should find them.

It was a few years ago and a few cars ago, so I’m sorry if I’m a bit vague 👍

I bought mine unpainted and a local bodyshop did a great job on it.

Thanks will take a look, edit.....can’t find them, any ideas?

Were you looking for a link to the spoiler? If so, I posted one further up in the thread.

Yes the price and bringing it in from the US is putting me off a bit.  Do you have a photo of the one you went with @el 3.2S

Mine is the same or very similar to the one in the link above. Quality was ok ish, had to do a little modifying in order to be able to get an allen key in the holes to tighten it down. If you squint from a distance it does not look too bad! Best bit is with the spoiler up it helps aid cooling I think, handy in the summer round these parts.

Pics of mine, won't be to everyone's taste but is completely reversible so no harm done!

  16. I think they look great. Shame nobody seems to make them in the UK. I considered a Joe Toth one some time ago but costs were uncertain and likely high, as mentioned. Ended up with a much less expensive one, don't remember where it came from? Mine involves removing the existing spoiler and fitting it onto the raising mechanism, as opposed to fitting on top of existing spoiler like this one here.

Fixed the instrument cluster back light, swapping out the 1.5v bulb, put a new stainless steel exhaust tip from Porsche on my exhaust looks stock and is nice and shiny and also replaced the plastic petrol cap and with a lovely alloy one.

    All sounds good but:
