  1. I’ve just noticed this thread - many congratulations @Withy, the 981 BGTS is a bit special, you will love the car and I suspect hang onto it for a while.  The PSE is great but I do often choose quiet mode as the pops and crackling is tiresome all the time - interestingly I think on full throttle and higher revs the exhaust opens up regardless of setting!

  2. Congratulations on the new car!

Not sure what the warranty is on it, but if you want a Porsche warranty you have to have owned the car for 3 months unless bought with an existing Porsche warranty or from an OPC.  You can choose one two or three years, and another recent change is that if you renew an existing warranty there is no need for the 111 point check, just pay to extend the warranty and that’s it.

Enjoy the many happy days out to come!

  3. I went from a 981 BGTS to a 991.2 GTS and after about 18 months back to another 981 BGTS!

The 911 ‘itch’ is it seems something a few of us experience at some time.  I always fancied a 911 but when the time came to get my first Porsche I decided on a Boxster GTS which I loved.  Two years later I decided to change to a 991.2 GTS thinking that would be my long term ‘keeper’, but after a great year in the car I once again longed for a Boxster.  The 911 was a truly great car and would be all many owners would ever want, but the problem for me was that it was too much of a GT car - I also wanted a convertible for nice weather and don’t like the looks of the 911 convertible.

My typical use of the car is for a drive out on nice days and the occasional holiday trip.  Jumping into the Boxster for a couple of hours is really enjoyable, great fun even at slower speeds on the right roads - the 911 felt heavier and although it handled very well it lacked the fun feeling at sensible speeds, to me it it only came alive on faster roads when pressing on into far higher speed than I was comfortable with.  On track I would think the 911 would please as much as a Boxster but I didn’t try it.   At 60 or so on my local roads it never felt alive in my hands like a Boxster can.

I find it hard to explain all the little things that contributed to my decision to return to a Boxster - but for me it was the right thing, and now after three years back in a 981 BGTS I know I have got my long term keeper.

  4. Congratulations @martyn!  The car will be a great upgrade from your 981S.  I'm a sucker on the Porsche configurator and can't help to choose lots of goodies, I won't suggest loads of 'nice but unimportant' things - but something I consider essential is the climate control - this is far more useful than it first sounds as it allows you to set a temperature and forget it, the standard fitment is manual aircon which needs to be fiddled with to keep comfortable.  I know we mostly have the roof down anyway, but on longer trips and in wet weather the climate control is invaluable.  Enjoy the tweaking of the configurator and the anticipation of collection day!

£1.5k sounds a bit high I'd say if it's just routine maintenance as the service intervals are every 2 years  (assuming you're not doing loads of miles) with a minor in between the majors.  Local indy said apart from the cabin & intake filters a minor was just oil & filter plus the service reminder re-set..

We all know Porsche know how to charge mind, so just be mindful if going the OPC service route and ask about.

It is possibly a bit high, but I've just had a 6 year service which is an interim (engine oil and filter, cabin filters and general checkover) with a few extras - polybelt change, engine air filters and brake fluid.  I didn't get much change from £1k.  OPC because I have so far kept the car under warranty - that works out at around £550 per year alone, a personal choice but I'm 'in profit' so far having had new PSE and new aircon condensers.  Then allow for new tyres every few years and the odd extra something going wrong etc, etc.  It all adds up.

Any one tips on what to watch out for on the 981s

Buying from an OPC you should have 2 years warranty so no real worries.  @daz05 youtube videos are very good, as he says the PSE valves are a weak point and the aircon condensers behind the bumper each side.  Otherwise the cars are pretty solid, expect to allow around £1.5k a year for maintenance if you keep with the dealer network.

I've noticed that the engine in mine is taking much longer to get warm up than I expected. My previous 981S would be fully warmed up after 3 miles whereas the Spyder is taking 10 miles so far. It's something I'll keep an eye on, but I'm interested to know what your experience is.

Are you sure you're comparing the same temp - coolant or oil?  I have had two 981's and while the coolant can be up to temp in about 3 miles the oil takes around 8-10 miles - and it's the oil I take note of, no full throttle or high revs until the oil is up around 90C.

  8. Congratulations @Withy, that's a lovely car!

Our 2015 F31 is still serving us well, it goes very well and we love it, don't usually keep cars over 5 years - sometime in the next couple of years it will go though and we have been wondering what next - SUV's tend to make my wife car sick so we haven't had one for over 10 years.  A Macan on PASM or air suspension might be OK - but an expensive mistake if it doesn't so I don't think she will agree to getting one!

Hopefully see you again before too long on one of our trips to Scotland.  Enjoy your car - don't forget to put some photos on here and tell us all about it!

Everything works as per the original standard 981 M.F. wheel. After fitting the GPS adapter inside the new wheel which converts the new electronic signals to one's the 981will recognise; real easy, it's then just plug and play. All credit to the electronic engineering from GPS in China. And it looks stunning?

Your mods are great - and very interesting!

But - I'm now curious, where did you buy the new steering wheel from please?  I'm very happy with my SportDesign wheel, but the new MF wheel is i know excellent having had one on my 991.2.
