Are you allowed to have a no displayed on a road car, i thought it was not allowed due to inciting racing.
If so it would mean all the WRC entrants driving on public roads between stages on Rally GB would be committing an offence.
(Spoiler: they're not)

OK, quick scan of the Rennlist thread (thanks iborguk and daz05) suggests that you have to be VERY specific about what hardware you use to replace the OEM ATA/IDE HDD or you will be wasting your time and money. The recommended replacement IDE SSD is a Zheino 64GB (other makes don't seem to work due to incompatibility between the PCM and the memory chips used in the SSD) but these are now unavailable, so you have to use an mSATA to IDE adapter - as per the definitive answer in foodbiker's recent post on Rennlist as follows:
"The key detail is that if you have an IDE drive (mine was out of a 2013 Boxster), DO NOT PASS GO. Just order one of the ~$35 Ableconn mSATA to IDE adapters (I used a Transcend mSATA like one of the earlier users did…64GB) and be done with it. Mine looked used and prepackaged (bent pins), but whatever. Remove the jumper on the IDE pins as you won't need it.
The answer is definitively that the Ableconn adapter uses an old-school controller that the PCM can recognize, specifically a Marvell 88SA8052 chipset. The one that I tried was a ~$15 “CY” brand controller, which used a JMicron JM20330 SATA bridge chip controller which the PCM didn’t like. This seems like the only viable option these days, given that the Zheino SSDs have not been available for quite some time."Hope this helps anyone else facing this problem. Thank God for forums and thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion. I'm now going to have a lie down 🤪

That one's for converting IDE (ATA) to SATA - needs to be the other way round to make a SATA drive fit

Spook I'm sure I read a post by a Panamera owner MY 11 who took this on and managed to do it with some kind of adapter.
Thanks for that Daz, I'm struggling to find the right adapter that would fit in the limited space available. As an alternative I'm looking into ATA interface SSDs but they are a bit pricey. Could you point me in the right direction for that post?

Just a warning that the HDD replacement with SSD upgrade cannot be done in early 981s like my 2012 Boxster S.
Like most things in my life I found this out the hard way, when I removed and opened my PCM unit today with a view to doing the upgrade. I quickly saw that the interface on the OEM Toshiba HDD was completely incompatible with the Samsung SSD I intended to replace it with (for the techies on here, the Samsung SSD is SATA, the Toshiba is old-fashioned ATA). The label on the Toshiba stated it was 40GB, with a build date of 20 February 2012.
It therefore appears that only the later PCM 3.1 units with the 100GB HDD can be replaced with SSD, so those contemplating what is a very sensible preventative maintenance upgrade first need to check whether their PCM 3.1 has Jukebox. If it hasn't, it simply can't be done.
For me it's now just a case of waiting for my lovely old-fashioned Toshiba HDD to fail, as all mechanical HDDs eventually do. Then it's a full PCM replacement unit required. Lucky me 😬

Just as I was about to start I thought don't people wear gloves around circuitry. I looked to my left and there they were just looking at me, and I thought I'm having a bit of that!
From my computer repairing days I would advise that an anti-static mat and grounding strap on the wrist is the way to go. But so glad you didn't know that before you filmed your video, as it would have denied us all some comedy (Mari)gold 😂

One of the best videos yet Daz, you didn't swear once despite the job being a little bit more difficult than you expected! Well done. Am I correct in assuming that the Waze navigation directions do not repeat in the binnacle like the OEM nav does?

Just got crucial 120GB drive and did full a clone (using clonezilla). Yes you do lose out on ~20GB but saves faffing around getting partition ids correct if you resize
Thanks for that. Have you noticed any improvement in response speed since the upgrade, particularly on navigation?

Fitted Joyeauto CarPlay kit, replaced the HDD of the PCM with a SSD whilst I had the PCM Unit out too
Interested in this. Which replacement SSD did you use and what size? Did you just clone it from original HDD?

If not a daily and not under warranty, consider Carnewal instead?
That's what i would have thought too, particularly with all the talk by those who would retrofit the OEM system at huge expense just to leave it permanently switched on anyway?

Bought 2 new Meyle drop links for the bargain price of £36 a pair off Ebay. Spent all of 10 minutes trying to fit one and then gave up at took it to a garage.
Fixed in an hour and peace restored, you can't believe how clunky they are when they fail.
Would you be so kind as to share the eBay link?

Well that didn't go very well, all fitted on OK and connected up the PIWIS system, then calibrated the steering angle sensor, all good so far but after that it didn't matter which options we selected on the PIWIS, it just wouldn't recognize the multifunction wheel and the heater at all, the mode selector switch works but that is all.
To cap it all the function select lever on the steering column now doesn't work at all either.
Not sure at this time if I have made a mistake in the connecting the adapters or if something is faulty, I have emailed the adapter guy to see what he comes up with
Did you get the replacement clock spring coded to the car?

At last!!! looks like my steering wheel is on its way.
Be really careful to make sure that the multiplug is fully disconnected from the clockring when you take your old wheel off. I didn't, and managed to break it when I removed mine ...

You sure on the clock ring as ive read none mf need new ring to uodate to mf (as well as coding)
As far as I'm aware, there is just the one part number for the clock spring and the applicable options are coded by PIWIS

I have a standard wheel on a MT car I fancy having a go at this am i right in thinking buy
1) Any 718, 991.2 wheel with multifunction for a MT car
2) Buy a new clockring
3) Buy the code to enable MF from that russian site
4) Connect it all up and code with PIWIS to enable MF
and oilla?
No need for a new clock ring - the PIWIS will code it for MFSW.
You will also need the German Performance Service adapter.
Et voila then Rodney.

Noticed from the picture that your 981 has 75k miles. Mine is of a similar vintage. Have you had any mileage-related problems?

INSTRUCTIONS FOR STEERING WHEEL REMOVAL AND RECONFIGURATION OF STEERING WHEEL BUTTONS

I considered this mod but eventually dismissed it in favour of a replacement 718 steering wheel. The price difference was worth it to replace the ugly OEM MF wheel.
