Great on trucks, but I wouldn't be promoting clutchless changes on a manual Boxster, even if when you heel/toe correctly the gear should to straight in.

@bally4563 there is no NEED, but it can reduce wear and tear on the 'box a bit and give smoother changes in terms of transmission backlash.  Horses for courses.  It is a technique I leant and I continue to use. but ho, hum.

No no I wouldn’t do a clutch less change on any car lol, but blipping for a downchange is a habit that has never left me

the clutch less bit was for constant mesh gearboxes (I didn’t word my post very well🤦‍♂️)

When on pace I just blip for a change down

I blip on every downchange whatever I’m driving-force of habit

I’m a lorry driver and constant mesh gearboxes were still a thing in the 90’s

If you didn’t blip to synchronise revs to road speed you’d certainly be playing a tune on the gearbox, and a lot of times simply would not be able to get the lower gear at all.

Once mastered you only needed the clutch to pull away and when you needed to come to a stop, happy days😎

I know thus far the posts show there’s no wrong way and what ever floats each owners boat .

However when I see ( in traffic queues etc ) the wrong badging esp crocked poorly aligned 320d or ML 320 in the wrong place then immediately springs in my mind it’s been ar*e ended / accident damaged .

    I can’t be the only one ?

As for “ naked “ it’s tells me the repairer ( cost cutting in the quote ) could be even bothered to source a replacement.

I know badge deletion is a no cost option too but it does open up in my mind the above .

Sorry to rain on a parade but I others must think this too ?

the previous owner of my car took the rear badge off because he thought it looked better without-I’ve done a fair bit of work to my car and I’m quite sure it hasn’t been hit up the ar*e and needed a paint job but I can definitely see your point .

Nice job-mine came with a similar arrangement.

my boot was debadged when I bought the car, not really a fan of the original Cayman or Boxster script-much happier with the satin black letters

Just when you said you for the train that's all. I've actually down 600 miles In one day and viewed 3 cars third car was cracking car. Found huge discrepancy in MOT mileages. Which may have caused issues further down the line if I sold car on.  I know I'm taking a punt sooner or later with any car, I've messaged a guy who is advertising a car looks fantastic advert says fsh, contacted him. Oh but I've no service book and only some paperwork, lol. He has had the car 3 months. I must be looking at wrong adverts obviously. Or need to up my budget or downgrade what I'm looking for to a 987 not at S or a 986S.

    The search continues.

Still not sure why me getting the train means you think I’ve purchased a car without viewing it-you’d have to be absolutely mad to purchase a car without viewing it!

You say you traveled six hundred miles in a day and a car you looked at didn’t stack up mileage wise with the mot’s-surely you would have checked mot mileages before you travelled to view a car?? It’s all online.

600 miles is a hell of a lot in one day ,that’s without the aggro of viewing three cars .

    Edit-Cumbria is somewhat remote though!!

Agreed, however when you get there and faults appear on the car even after a PPI that makes the car unroadworthy to drive 200 miles back home, it soon starts to frustrate you. I guess you purchased without seeing the car in person or test driving  first by the sounds of it.

    What makes you say that?

I went to view the car after speaking to the owner at length several times

took it for a long test drive and looked the car and it’s service history over ,was satisfied it was a good un and bought it and drove it home(got the train there)

18 within budget and around 14 of those 18 are over 150 miles away, 3 are the 3.4 and higher tax bracket, doesn't leave a lot. The spec I'm looking for or hoping to find most cars are 300 miles away. Living in Cumbria does have it's drawbacks, lol.

I bought my Cayman from a guy in morecambe-I live 30 miles north of London.if it’s the right car it’s the right car.only a day out your life to travel to get one even if it’s 200 odd miles away

  8. Mud and cr*p accumulates in this area -it’s surprising how much shyatee gets up there if you rub your hands around the inside of the rear arch lip(wear gloves when you do this!!)

for anyone that hasn’t had their rear arch liners out, whip them off and see how much crud gets in there-quick clean out and some bilt-hamber or waxoyl  -job done

Some dealers wont retail vehicles above a certain age as they do not want to dilute the forecourt.

Then they should put them in the auctions ,not some iffy “trade sale”

you can bet no trader would be paying their trade price

To be honest, it's the same as a private sale at the end of the day, no comeback. Depends if you are willing to take the risk or not.

If the price is right and you have a slush fund for an IMS replacement, it could be a good deal as the car does look tidy.

Gut if you'd prefer some backup, a dealer purchase is the only way forward.

No right or wrong answer as everyone has different levels of risk

I always much prefer to buy privately, enthusiast owned loads of receipts etc-and I know I’m on my own if things go wrong.

I would definitely not buy a car from a trader that wouldn’t stand by the car and wanted to put it through as a private sale in his own name or as a trade sale with no comebacks!
Because the car looks nice and shiney  he thinks he can get a bit more for it than if he put it through the auctions. Bloody Arthur Daley ..

  11. Your car looks lovely!!

Can I ask how thorough the inspection from Nick Giles was?

There is a guy on pistonheads that had him do an inspection on a 986 and he gave it the thumbs up-and turns out it had a long-standing head gasket failure/cracked head  amongst other things-apparently he doesn’t even lift the car off the ground to inspect it!!

  12. Glad to see you’ve got it back and had a decent job done that you’re happy with.

Shame about the shyate job from your insurance company-you’ve handed them everything on a plate  and they still can’t be arsed.very poor imho

I need to do this, have the exact same symptoms.. @And.rs1800 What make/model of coil pack did you use to replace?

Beru ZS 178’s from autodoc-oem apparently and 106 quid for all six with postage during one of their sales-problem hasn’t completely gone away it seems, need to clean the maf sensor I think.
