  1. Finally finished with this weekend's work. Paul @TROOPER88 helped me with the clutch, flywheel and Rear Main Seal install yesterday. Luckily we had a gazebo over us because the weather was atrocious. We worked until just after 6 pm, I think. This morning I got busy and reinstalled the exhaust and all the other bits I took off. Then I had to do a few more jobs on the car. Sort out the pipe from the airbox to the intake which wasn't connected on the airbox end. Before that though I had to take off the whole air pipe because there was still one recalcitrant bolt that needed to go on the gearbox. What a pain that was. Then of course the roof had developed one of it gremlins so all afternoon I was bugging Paul with questions and he guided me to get the roof working and seated properly. The warning light still stays on but I'll have another go the coming weekend. I was tired and annoyed with the darn thing - and I wanted to take the car for a test drive!

I have to say that I could not have done the job without Paul's guidance and assistance. Trust me, it was a load of work and we were non-stop all day with the exception of one or two cups of coffee. I can't speak highly enough of him.

All that effort has paid off handsomely though. The clutch feels like a Porsche clutch should feel. The car is a delight to drive and runs beautifully.

Next weekend I'll revisit the roof, and then finally get the graphite grey carpet out, and the NOS black carpet in. I'm still waiting for one piece to arrive but the main carpet and all the other major bits are here so I can crack on with that.

Edited because I completely forgot to mention the transmission mounts which we replaced. Easy enough job - just a pain to ensure everything lines up.

I just received the 3d printed console delete kit. It's a really pleasant surprise. Quality is good and it look nice. Obviously the surface needs sending but I am really pleased overall. Around GBP40 including shipping at the end

That looks great! If you stick the right colour carpet over it I doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference between this and the £700 ones..

I'd be interested to know how good a fit it is.

  3. New interior carpet has finally arrived. The first one I bought went missing somewhere and all that arrived was the address label...

Bought a set off eBay that is basically new old stock as well as a black engine cover, firewall cover, and the bit that goes at the bottom behind the seats. This means I can now finally complete the black interior. I was hoping to have had it done by now but c'est la vie. I've stashed it in the study for now and will crack on with that once we've completed the clutch etc.

I must say the car is unrecognisable from the car I bought - in a good way :)

Does anyone have experience with P Zero and PS4? I've only had P Zeros and love them, degraded performance in cold/wet notwithstanding. Do people who've had both prefer the PS4?

When I bought the car it had a set of P Zero on it. Not really a fair comparison as they were old and rock hard. Felt like driving on wood. Changed for a set of PS4 and have stuck with them ever since. I changed the rears last year and will probably change the fronts this year. Pretty happy with PS4.

  5. I bought Michelin Pilot Sports 4. Always served me well. Great in the wet and not bad when it comes to durability.

What sort are you going for? Tpye911 do some good value rubber ones. I fitted them on my 996

To be honest I just got them from Steve Strange (one at least). Usable second hand part. As long as they don't leak they should be fine for years to come. Mine are definitely leaky.

  7. Yesterday - removed bumper and exhaust.

Today - removed aluminium diagonal braces and plate under the gearbox, took off sway bar and disconnected drive shafts. Also, popped off gear shift cables and took out the slave cylinder.

All with the support of @TROOPER88. Everything now ready for the clutch job next weekend. Th whole rear of the car looks naked but all in a good cause.

The transmission mounts look a little done for to be honest so I'm sourcing some replacements from eBay. Might as well sort that out whilst we're in there.

@½cwt Yes I have had a read and seems very easy, almost too easy. I then went out to do some more googling and some places suggested more coding/ fiddling was needed :( but you never know what to believe....

@Sanky Yes it has OBC, thanks for the link :thumbsup_still:

Cheers! @RedBarediver Feel free to PM or post in here

Would any part of this be useful to you?

  9. I have a speedo from a later model than mine going begging if you want it. It's probably not going to work on your car but you can cannibalise bits that you need out of it and maybe get yours working.

I'll take pics when I get home so you can see what it looks like (all I used was the binnacle and I took the little plastic knobs as spares if mine should fail).

Should that part be greased?  On the old Bendix type starters found on cars in the 60’s / 70’s any wet lubricants would soon clog up again. Graphite was recommended.

Doubt it. I had an old VW beetle (1975) model where the Bendix gear threw a few teeth. Being a student at the time and perpetually broke, I bought a new Bendix gear for a few rands (South African), took out the starter motor and stripped it. Cleaned everything up, refreshed the carbon brushes and replaced the Bendix gear. Can't remember too well now but there may have been some light grease involved somewhere. Probably on the axle before I put the Bendix gear on. Bendix gear itself - nothing. Worked fine for years afterwards.

  11. Probably worth mentioning that since I changed the battery (starter was on the list to eventually be changed as well) the screeching noise from my starter has gone away. Not had it come back yet. If it does come back I'll get in there and change it.

Thanks for all the tips chaps.

I managed to clean out the rear drain holes under the clamshell, to be honest I don't think they were blocked but the now run clear for sure. The bases of both doors are wet the passenger one is more towards the front of the door the drivers side is towards the rear, so next job when we have a clear day is door membrane. remove the door cards and see what condition the membrane is in.  I've got the sticky stuff as this happened on my other german car of about the same age...

Will keep you posted with how I get on.

    Cheers

Huh. I had my door cards off last weekend (changed to black ones) and I don't have any door membranes on the doors at all. I don't get water in through the doors so I guess that means the drain holes in the doors are clear. I guess I should look into getting some membranes just in case..

    Nothing.

It is the lowest component on the front of the engine.

Unless someone installed a tracker to see where he goes (ha ha)

  14. Well, I got the next year's insurance sorted for £219. I could have gotten it for £169, but I had to call them and speak with them and listen to the inevitable sales pitch etc etc. Not interested. Frankly, I took the one for £219 because it was just online and done. Now the lot that charged £219 are trying to call me all the time. Not interested in their upselling techniques so I just ignore the calls.

If anyone from any of the insurance companies are reading this, take the hint: if I don't answer the third or fourth call then it means I am not interested in paying more for the stuff that you are trying to sell me. If I had wanted roadside assistance or whatever then I would have taken it. The fact that I didn't means that I am happy with my current roadside assistance (Green Flag) and don't need anything else. If I want anything else, I'll call you.

I came across this issue too.  If you ever have the inside pull cable break, make sure you get the old style one.  Not available new anymore either.

Good point. The cable on the driver's side looks a little frayed. I shall put that on the "To Do" list and get the cable in anticipation.

  16. I put the new door cards on the car over the weekend.

After taking mine out I realised that there are very slight differences between my car and the later models. The door cards I bought have the airbag inserts, which is not an issue since it is really just a leather panel and it doesn't come with airbags :) but it also has a subtle difference to how the door handle cable attaches to the inside door handle. I wanted to use the silver handles that are on the new door cards but it wouldn't work with my cables. Luckily it's a Porsche so within about two minutes I could get the door handle on the door cards apart, swapped over the silver handles onto my old door card mechanism and install that into the new door cards. Works perfectly and looks really good.

Now if the main carpets will finally arrive I can get that job done this weekend....

My Boxster purchase was a spur of the moment decision.

So was mine. Once you have bonded with it you are lost :)

So far I have done, and not in any particular order: complete suspension refresh, heater display, steering wheel and horn, new tyres, bits on the roof, brake booster, brake master cylinder, exhaust (twice), new condensers for the aircon, various little bits for the interior etc etc.

I also bought a hardtop for it (great upgrade) and have now started changing the interior to black. The seats started that process. I didn't enjoy the 986 seats and got hold of a nice set of black 987 seats. Liked the look of it in the car and started changing the interior little by little. Dashboard is done and I am now just waiting for the arrival of the main carpet so I can take out the graphite grey carpet that is still in there. Clutch is going to be changed end of the month thanks to @TROOPER88 who kindly offered his help with that project. I don't think I would have had the cojones to try doing that on my own..

Eventually I will run out of things to fix on this car but probably not anytime soon.

  19. I did the same with mine when it failed the MOT due to a broken front spring (awful bloody potholes around here in winter/ early spring) and a leaky rear suspension. Got it through the MOT with used bits and then took it to @TROOPER88 to get the whole lot done in two goes. The new suspension is a a game changer. Never realised how good these little cars really can be. It was a ton of work but getting it all done by Paul was probably the most cost-effective way of getting the car back to a good place mechanically.

Now just the clutch left to do. The clutch isn't actually all that bad but having felt what it SHOULD feel like and then comparing the feel to that of mine, it is clear that mine is very much on the way out.

  20. Replaced the old battery with a new one. Got a good deal on the same spec as I had in the car. I figured it lasted at least 5 years and at £107 delivered it is a good deal. If this one lasts 5 years too I'll be very happy. Car already seems happier when I start it up - no more labouring with a weak battery.

Tomorrow I'll change the door cards for black ones that I got off eBay. Still waiting for the large black carpets to arrive. The other black bits arrived this week (uprights, floor mats, side covers to the centre console, main centre console with an actual working ashtray) and once it does I'll remove the seats (again) and fit the whole lot in one go.

    Can't wait.
