Drove it with the roof down on the hottest day so far if my short ownership.

Really enjoyed the sun and damn you feel like you're sat on the floor next to these SUVs.

I probably only have another 5 years of being able to clamber in and out.

I'm currently reading the Paul Frere book on the history of the Boxster (strongly recommended and reveals some interesting aspects to the car).  The exhaust system is described as dual skinned in rust proof steel.  Seems to be pretty effective at 20 years and 100+k miles for many owners but can't last for every.  Shame it is tricky getting replacements that don't drone and don't cost a fortune.

@Sazzy hopefully just a joint leaking not the silencer itself.

I replaced the back box on mine earlier this year - I nailed it going up an onramp, then noticed a louder rumble at the next lights. The seam had blown just above the outlet. I got a second hand one and had a few small seam splits welded so it should last a good few years again. I could have gone for a new one but didn't want the drone.

  3. Drove from Cullen to Edinburgh, the last leg of a 600 mile trip this week. This is the longest trip I have done in my car, and I am very happy with the way it behaved. I had the suspension aligned the week before last (needed a few parts replaces as the bolts had seized up) and new front tyres fitted, and this was the first trip I have really been able to appreciate the slot car handling. I've had it  just over a year but most of that was winter and lock down, so not really done many long drives. I got just over 30mpg on from the first tankful - we went up north via the A9, Braemar and Tomintoul, so a mix of roads. Probably had the top down for 550 of those miles too. Which was nice...

  4. I fitted new frunk gas struts as the old ones didn't really work until the bonnet was right up to the top. Now the lifts itself from about halfway.

Can anybody tell me if the rears struts on a 986 pop the boot lid up themselves when new? You know, when you unlock it with the keyfob.

  5. Not sure what I walked into up there ^^ 😲

Today I put a replacement muffler on my 986 - I got one a couple of weeks ago but had to get a few little cracks welded up. They probably would have been ok but I didn't want to have to deal with it again in a couple of years. The back seam of the old one had blown out and the rest of it was on the way out by the looks of it.

I got genuine new sleeves and clamps to go between the cats/elbows/mufflers, and a couple of the wee plates that bolt the cats to the arm that comes off the muffler, along with some 13mm nuts. I also got a couple of replacement elbows, just in case I had to cut the current ones off but I didn't need them.

I put the car up on a ramp and started unbolting bits - I had squirted wd40 around under there a couple of weeks ago which I think was a big help. Things came to a halt pretty quickly and I realised I would need to take the bumper off to make it easier and less sweary. The only real drama was lining everything back up before tightening everything - one of the short arms was bent, but easily fixed. There was a stud snapped off the new muffler too, but I ground and drilled it out and  and put a bolt in there. I probably spent a total of 3 productive hours on it - there was some faffing involved but there always is. No skinned knuckles, and it fired up with the usual quiet burble, which was nice.

This link was helpful, especially the tip about a ratchet head 13mm spanner - it was a real help:

    Thanks Bud.

  6. Over the last couple of weeks I fitted 4 new brake retaining pins and spring clips, and a set of new wheel nuts with new lock nuts too. I have also reattached the plastic trim at the bottom of the windscreen - it was pulling up over the plastic nut, so I put a washer under it. Also added a screwdriver and spanner to the toolkit and washed and waxed today. Bored...

  7. Good news wih the MOT Gman - I got one late January with no advisories. Made my day!

Today my work building was occupied by protesters so I was sent home early. Which was nice...

I have been waiting for a weekend with less wind and rain than we have been having, but today was lovely here in Embra. I got some misfire error codes a while back and an inspection showed a couple of cracks on the coil packs. Today I replaced the plugs and coil packs on my 986 - took about 2.5 hrs and didn't have any major dramas at all. The plugs didn't look too bad but now I know they are new. Then I took it for a top-down blast in the interests of research; wound it up through the gears and it seems crisper. That sound though...

So a good day all in all.
