I thought I would put down the steps for installing after market seats into a 987.1, because when I did the job I pretty much had to figure it out for myself....
This method ensures that you don't get any warning lights on the dash without needing to get them deactivated by your local service centre…. But obviously you do this at your own risk; safety first.
Parts Needed:-
⦁ Two Seats!
⦁ Two Adaptor plates
⦁ 8x 10mm Penny Washers
⦁ 2x 3.3 Ohm resistors (Air bag, pins 16, 17)
⦁ 2x 100 Ohm resistors (Seat belt, pins 18, 19)
⦁ 2x Seat Belt Plugs
Process:-
1. Install the seats on the adaptor plates: in my case the seats needed to be fitted directly in the centre of the adaptor plates: and I needed to drill new bolt holes to achieve this (measure 5 times, drill once!)
2. Bolt the seat to the adaptor plate.
3. Fix the Seat Belt Plugs to the side of the seats (I removed the mounting point on the adaptor plates, because I wanted the plugs to move with the seats, like on the factory seats).
4. Open the car.
5. Open the windows
6. Fold the roof down,
7. Take key out of ignition.
8. Disconnect the battery – leave the bonnet open.
9. Wait 30 minutes so the ECU is definitely de-powered. (Do not put the key in the ignition with the battery disconnected: the key will get stuck in the ignition!)
10. Whilst waiting, protect the body and sills around the doors (Picture 1)
11. After the 30 minutes has elapsed, look under the seat: disconnect the Big Yellow Plug by first sliding the black retainer sideways (see picture 2) then pulling the two halves apart. One half of the yellow plug is attached to the seat, the other half is attached to a thick cable which connects to the floor of the car.
12. Slide the seat back and remove the cover plates on the seat rails using a screwdriver to lift the little flap (see picture 3) and slide the cover horizontally forward.
13. Unscrew the two front seat rail bolts under the covers you just removed.
14. Move the seats fully forward, unscrew the two rear seat rail bolts.
15. Carefully lift the seat out of the car.
16. Wire the 3.3 Ohm resistor between the pin #’s 16 and 17 on the yellow plug attached to the floor of the car. (Picture 4)
17. Wire the 100 Ohm resistor between the pin #’s 18 and 19 on the yellow plug attached to the floor of the car. (Picture 4)
18. Wrap the plug in a waterproof bag, and tuck it out of the way in the recess in the floor.
19. Lift the new seat carefully into the car, Slide it fully back and fit the front two bolts in the front of the adaptor plate -holding it to the car floor.
20. Slide the seat fully forward and fit the two rear bolts into the rear of the adaptor plate. Holding it to the car floor.
21. Repeat the steps 11 to 20 for the other seat.
22. Reconnect the battery.
23. When I started the car there were no warning lights on the car, except the PASM light; and after 100 metres of driving this light went out and never came back: there were never any seat belt or airbag lights.
24. Enjoy your new seats! (Picture 5!)
