  1. Bought it mine in Feb 21 without driving it/seeing it and not planning to sell, I have been driving(thanks to my role at my company) different vehicles at the tracks & roads, 986 is always the best fun I have ever had, chassis could be better if it is more stiff and it has a bit more power for tracks but for public driving it is great. It is simple, well balanced, easy to control, more natural feedback, it also doesn't cost much. I might be tempted for also early 1999,2000 911s but not planning to sell my 986 at all. 986 is the first Porsche I have ever seen close by and I found the same spec as I have seen in 2002 so again not planning to sell, hopefully I won't have to :)

  2. Nothing with the car, just went to the office few times last week, 50miles drive one way with different routes to enjoy a bit more.

I managed to convince a colleague and we have found a good late 2002 986 and he just purchased it. I met with 4 more colleague who has 986. I mentioned them about our forum, both hopefully they will join soon.

The 10 year limit is only for goods vehicles, buses, coaches and mini-buses.

Tyre age restrictions for good vehicles, buses, coaches and minibuses - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Follows from a number of road fatalities where old tyres have failed on vehicles like this, particularly if they were remoulds or re-grooved.

Thanks, exposing that I am ex-lorry driver! I understand there are a lot of classic cars in the UK, but no tyre age limit is a bit odd, I can't imagine a car with 10 year old tyres doing 60-70mph, cornering, potholes etc. 😐

Finally got the new tyres fitted after ordering and paying on 22/3.

what a difference - not surprising as the old ones were dated 2013 & 2014...

Good to lose the steering vibration as well...

hope to get out tomorrow to get them in 😏

I think legal limit is 10 years of age for tyres in the UK, I always try to change tyres after 6 years of age but yes it should be different car with new tyres!

Not cheap, but if nothing was changed since 2002 you should notice the difference :)

Yes, nothing changed, still original parts except brake disc and pads. I am hoping a big difference, there was a small play which I didn't like, hopefully I can do rear hopefully couple of years later, if I can earn more somehow😀

Seems a weekly occurrence sadly with these boxsters!

Check the 986 section for autodoc thread. Might help you get parts on the cheaper side if your not in a rush for delivery.

Thanks. I don't know but, I had this issue in all of my cars in the UK.  I have driven in Turkey a lot, temperature range -30 between +40 also some old cars as well, but I never had this issue. Dampers were leaking every 100,000 km or so, but no broken coil springs 😀

Happy to help if I can with info, and possibly physically if you are in the more northerly part of Bucks....

Bilstein B4 are OE, Koni Special Active gat a good write up.  But there's the headlines:- Ping @T911UK for what deals he has on springs, Spyder performance or Meyle for coffin arms and tuning forks unless you can find TRW (OE), TRW for drop links and also Sachs (OE) top mounts.

Thank you for the offer Chris, I greatly appreciate it, however I wouldn't be welcomed at home after spending some time on this work 😀 Even washing cars monthly is a challenge😀 For instance, I changed the left parking bulb at 1am and right one at 5am! my Thanks for reminding the list of the parts, I took those as a note in the last meet that I came. I will give car to specialist for this one. I can do rears hopefully in near future.

  6. Hi and Welcome  @lilfin1568 !

If you intend to use car almost daily 17in could be better. For weekend use, 18in could be perfect. I only use it for weekends, because my workplace is very far and I have 18in 2000 Turbo rims(not-hollow and heavy) and it feels really harsh, I need to slow down a lot for any bump on the road, looks good and feels great if you can find new tarmac/smooth road.

On the deactivation bar keep an eye on ebay as they come up quite often. I picked one up a few weeks ago for £40 as I have a little one coming along in 9 weeks.

LaRose in Sevenoaks have quoted £54 plus VAT to program the occupancy for child seat. You can modify a VAG buckle to fit the bar to use a non-Porsche child seat 👍

Thanks, I found one on ebay for £50 !

My local indy switched mine on in about 5 minutes.

Have a read of this from the How To section, if you haven't already.

    and this:

Porsche Boxster Cruise Control Installation - 986 / 987 (1997-08) - Pelican Parts Technical Article

Thanks Chris, I know that it is a lot of work, checked Pelican parts before but our how to section seems much better! I hope that it will increase the usage of the car, last time I did NC500, it was a bit painful on motorways because almost constant pedal position.

  8. SORN more than a month now:(  Due to too much DIY tasks for a new family member! I will do last wash hopefully tomorrow. Today I bought 4 stalk column switch to add Cruise Control finally(I hope that somehow with PIWIS), and also ordered a steering wheel spacer to get steering wheel closer to me. I will have to buy airbag deactivation bar or DIY for baby seat, I am open for any suggestions, looks like OPC is selling it for £580 or so.

  9. I had a similar issue. You can check the tightness of the mirror bracket screws. There are 3 screws gold colour, as this video shows. Also make sure that your seals aren't perished. In my case, I changed left side seal and there was a missing screw on the right hand side. I hope that it helps.

It was a 'special metallic' at the time, so a very expensive option.  A few years later Cobalt was moved to the common metallic palate and Lapis was moved to the 'special metallic' price list.

Oh, I didn't know, thanks, good information!

  11. Worked on little 986s (yes I have two of them ) Now they are both working, they are more than 20 years old. Changed front parking lights. Cleaned seats, door cards and applied balm later, polished the part of the exhaust box. Attended Gaydon Gathering yesterday.

  12. I did NC500 with detours and a trip of Isle of Skye. This was between 8th of April and 16th of April, the weather was amazing. I washed the car 2 times during trip, there are new stone chips I am afraid, but it worth all the trouble. I don't know how many times of refueling but I know how much I paid thanks to high fuel prices.

In total,I did more than 2000miles in a week there is still 986 noise in my head. Front boot for my wife, rear boot was for me and shopping and it was all good for a week trip.We didn't have any issues, no issues with ground clearance or tires. There were couple of squeaks but all of them easily solved by borrowing some tools. Best part was except one day, every day was top down for panoramic view. I logged the OBD data, dash cam, and so many photos.I can share more if anyone interested,I am still checking all data.

    Please help!

Car starts fine. Smooth acceleration , good power, but when hot it idles with a surge and then almost dies I think it’s called ‘hunting’. Idle when cold is fine. It has cut out a couple of times at low revs on a turn, but not regularly.
No coolant leaks, no oil usage

I have fitted new plugs and coil packs cleaned the throttle body and a new Bosch MAF today.

No change still an uneven idle when hot.

Any one had similar issues and solved it successfully? Maybe I can sort it myself .Maybe not🤔

I have the similar issue, I did all cleaning over the weekend, because they told me your car pass MOT emission with very low margin. Mine is like like as you mention but the both cold and hot, I don't have stable idle or while driving 1st gear without pressing anything car is not smooth. What else we need to check if there is no air leak?

What do you do in Towcester, other than lunch or dinner, that takes longer than an hour??

Having a SORN with no MOT locked me at there. So, I watched couple of greyhound races on the racecourse, spent time on Waitrose cafe, went to Towcester Mill Brewery and tried 1/2 pints brews, did a nice walk to Easton Neston House, on the way back, had a coffee with blondie cake, enjoy the view from Bury Mount. I finished all with checking new cars on Porsche showroom. I guess all Towcester done for years to come and I am ready for my retirement.

  15. I had to bought two new rear tyres, luckily I have found what I have been looking for. On the way to MOT, nearside rear had a cut that cords exposed. Bloody pot holes on A5!  After tyre change and alignment, MOT passed with no advisory. All day I wondered around Towcester which was nice though. Offside rear is in good condition 4mm depth Continental if anyone is interested.

  16. Getting ready for MOT on 17th of March, checked everything, all good. Just realized that rear coffin arm would be better with new ones.

I am also preparing my daily for sale and I will start using Boxster daily, finally. My wife calls me crazy because of the fuel prices, but I don't mind it for now! I will sell my daily Fiesta 1.6TDCI ultra fuel-efficient  hopefully soon for a 1 year- fuel cost of 986 : ). Fiesta helped me a lot for savings for 986, but the time has come.

  17. Rear defroster was not working, it works after wire continuity check. Cleaned throttle body on Saturday but surprisingly it was much cleaner than I thought. Sunday, I drove car to Silverstone for Lap of Lights. I finally saw(from a distance) this Grossmutter (grandma) 718 W-RS Spyder. I missed the chance to see this car in 2010 in Goodwood and also in Porsche Museum visits. Here are some shots with that beauty.

ajWEGNM.jpgIf you are interested in this car, it has unique history. https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/grossmutter-718-w-rs-spyder-one-of-a-kind/

Anybody on here swapped their old plastic screened soft top to a face lift glass one?  My plastic screen is clouded and has one split so was thinking it would be better to upgrade.

I can buy a facelift roof complete with frames etc  for not a lot more than getting the plastic screen replaced - is it a straight swap?

Removing the old top complete looks to be pretty straightforward after watching some videos on you tube !

    thanks

I changed my 2002 blue roof with all good condition (3 years used ) 2004 blue roof.  I sold my 2002 blue roof and balance was just 50£ extra.

Changing the roof is an easy process but you need a friend to help you. There are only 6 bolts near roll cage. Very happy with my new roof, sound isolation is improved but engine rear access is a bit more limited. Please let me know if you need any additional photo, video. Probably you have seen this video
