  2. First time at Unique with my 986, previously with the 911 I had used an air cooled specialist, however Unique seemed to get good reviews so the 986 went in for a full service and health check. I was very impressed by Darren’s facility and the knowledge they have. Also they are a friendly bunch and are happy to put your car up on a ramp and go through with you what’s good and what’s not so good. Darren inspected mine and was very complimentary stating that it didn’t look like it was a 100K miles car which was good to hear from someone who knows their stuff.

Besides the service, they diagnosed a throttle problem which meant the car was slower than it should be, this was fixed and it has transformed the car. Anyway, I shall be using Unique again for servicing or repairs and am happy to recommend Darren and his guys, they also make a decent cup of coffee.

My wife has got that problem with her car, but what do you expect from a 5 month old landrover ! Having said that her last one needed a new engine at 6 months !

6 Months, the engine lasted that long🤣. Seriously though I’ve had Land Rovers all my driving lifetime. They do get under your skin though, I still have 3 old ones. My newest one is a 1985 V8 which is a nice toy to have in the garage.

  4. I was looking for a silver 986 with red interior, I wasn’t bothered too much about what other options it had, luckily I found a one owner car with full leather interior. As it is a weekend car options were not something I was too bothered about. If it had been a daily it would have been different.

That is why the OPC option needs to be considered carefully at least and more then simply cost. You know what you are getting in terms of sound/noise.  Expensive yes, but it come as a kit with the 2 U-bends and 2 connectors and  bear in mind your current one lasted 18 years and so most likely the next on would too, plus they fit first time.

I am not obsessed with OE, but I do like finding good value so I'm saving my pennies for when my now 22 year old exhaust finally goes.

My 99 Boxster still has the original exhaust and unless I could find something really well made that sounds like the original I think I would be going with the Porsche version.

  6. Thanks guys for the excellent and comprehensive information. I’ll probably let an Indie do the work as these days crawling around under cars without a ramp doesn’t do my back and knees any good.

  7. Sorry guys as I’m sure this has been done to death but I can’t seem to find what I’m looking for. For those of you who have done a suspension refresh, which manufacture/s have you used? This isn’t for a track day car rather more a Sunday driver. There seems a huge difference in prices and many companies advertising suspension parts. I don’t want to do it on the cheap but not sure I want to pay Porsche prices (even if I could find them). I have seen mention of Spyder Performance which seem not overly expensive.

What have you guys used and been happy with? Equally are there any to steer clear of if you excuse the pun.

    Thanks in advance.

  8. Makes me smile when I read about “misting” at the rear of the engine. I have an old Land Cruiser and sometimes visit an Australian YouTube garage where typically they have a beat up old LC in for work and the comments go something like this (in an Australian voice). “Yeah she’s in for a bit of work, there’s a bit of oil misting between the engine and gearbox but she’s done around 600,000 kilometres so not too bad, not worth worrying about, she’ll be right mate”.

  9. How much you may have to do to sort out any problems will no doubt be due to how well the car was maintained I.e. poor maintenance on a 63K miles car may be like good maintenance on a 120K car. My one owner 986 has done 98K miles with regular servicing and maintenance with parts replaced as required. This year I’m looking at a suspension refresh as it’s never apparently needed one but given it’s nearly 100K miles I feel it’s about time it was done and while the suspension is being looked at I will have the garage give it a thorough health check and anything else that looks like it’s near it’s sell by date I’ll have replaced. Preventative maintenance is well worth the cost I feel.

  10. It worries me not one jot if some folks are disparaging about the early 986 headlights, it’s horses for courses and what one likes another doesn’t and great that we all like different styles/ features in the cars we own. What does slightly annoy me is when people come up to you and say things like why didn’t you buy a 987 ( or other number you would like to insert) as they are better cars, well I could have but I chose the 986 because that’s the one I liked with the features I liked and that’s the way I like my eggs.

  11. I came from an air cooled 911 into Boxster ownership, I looked at all the different Boxster types and could have bought any of them but the 986 in launch colours really sold it for me. I wasn’t into balls out acceleration or the latest design but the relative simplicity of the 986 appealed to me also there was a bit of nostalgia coming into play with the red interior as I remember all of those classic 50s cars which had lovely red leather. Coming from an older 911 the 986 was just modern enough, it’s the sports car I should have bought in 1999 when mine was made.

  12. I’ve never bought a plate but my old Land Rover is RGC which is my partners Dads initials. Also my 986 came with a nice plate which the PO had bought when they bought the car 23 years ago and spelt his wife’s name. I’ve tried to get my partner to change her name but she’s having non of it 😄

  13. I see you can get a luggage liner “box” for the front of a 986 but can’t seem to see one for the rear, I assume they are not available for the rear?
Does the front one just “sit” in the frunk and is not fastened?

Very different types of car IMO, the 986 is quite raw, unrefined and analogue compared to the newer cars,

Mike597 comments made me think back to other cars I have owned as I didn’t consider my 986 raw and unrefined after coming from an older air cooled 911 which was raw and unrefined IMO compared to my 986. My Morgan’s when I had them were very unrefined  even between the 1969 4-4 and the 2002 4-4 there was hardly any difference, although the seats were a bit better in the later car. The Morgan’s were quite a brutal ride in many ways, a hard ride, skittish, poor build quality etc. Mind you all of the above pale into insignificance compared to my 1953 Land Rover, now that is the epitome of raw and unrefined.😂

You can diagnose it by touching your toes with your finger tips then seeing if you can progress to getting your wrists on the floor (which I can do).

Good grief I can only dream of touching my toes, I can barely touch my knees ;)

The seats in my 986 are very comfortable though :)
