    This is indeed sound advice. For all sorts of rusted parts. Give them a good wire brushing first, and soak. Keep doing it. Then do it again.

    Well worth it.

    The cats are bolted at one end on to the manifolds and the other end on to the U bends on the main silencer. They are not supported elsewhere. The main exhaust bolts on at the rear on the original mounting point.

    The cats have a mounting point on each of them but there isn't anywhere to bolt these to if you are not using the original silencer.

    Should I fabricate something to support the middle of the cats, (and iff so, where to bolt to?) or is the support at each end enough? The cats are not that heavy and at this point, I am not overly concerned...I think!

    How are you getting on with that exhaust? How loud is it, does it drone badly, and did you fit it yourself? Fit ok?

    I'm considering one myself.

    I'm actually considering doing this to find rattles! Amazing how little rattles and squeaks get louder after you've fixed the major suspension ones!

    I'm loving my Boxster, but having driven a few of them, I know that I could p*ss all over it in an S1 Elise.

    Same driver, same time, same (twisty) road? The Elise would whip the Boxster. 

    Not as comfortable, not as reliable, but I can see why Randeep is keen, no?

  5. I got mine in February '22, so two years ago. Similarly to you, my cars are hobbies as well as transport. Have a sensible Seat as a family car.

    I've done a fair bit to the Boxster already, and still have a good bit planned, so I hope it'll be with me a while yet.

    What might make me change it is the fact that I can only take one other member of the family out in it at once. Although that's also a reason for keeping it!

    I had an XJ years ago and loved it. Have longed for another one ever since, so if I do sell the 986, it'll be supercharger time!

    I've spent a fair bit of time living in various European countries, and I've never understood why we don't surface our roads the way they do. Imagine our country roads with their surfaces...

    As far as wheels go, can I ask how much you've advertised them at? I've been sitting on a set of sport design 18s that I seem to have overpriced.

    Will be interesting to hear how you get on with the 17s when you get them.

  7. Now, I'm sure this has been done to death, but I'm finding conflicting information.

    Basically, I want to replace all the brake lines on my 2000 S.

    I have done this before, but it was on a 1980 Dolomite, so not quite the same thing...

    I assume everything on my motor is metric, so do I need a DIN flare? And therefor DIN unions?

    Having read up on it a wee bit, I reckon I'll be using cunifer pipe, brass unions, braided hoses. Does anyone have recommendations of brands to go for/avoid?

    Looks like I'll be making the two crossover pipes in two bits each and joining them.

    I fully expect some of the plastic clips to break, but don't want to  just order them all ahead of time. Are there any that will definitely break?

    My flaring tool has long since disappeared (that Dolly wasn't yesterday) so I'll be buying a new one of them too. Again, what do folk recommend? 

    Plan is to get all the lines done just now, and have the calipers refurbed some time soon when funds allow... might go black...

    Oh, and I see there's a GT3 master cylinder upgrade... worth it?

  8. I've just fitted mine.

    I'm amazed at the difference it makes.

    Messaged back and forward with @wasz about it before ordering. The carpet is a good match colour wise, but a slightly different texture. I knew this would be the case before ordering, so no problem.

    I would say to be careful when fitting it, as i think the pointy bits where it meets the centre console could be quite easily snapped if you're a bit heavy handed. Also, when tightening it down, I went for FT. In this case, fairly tight rather that the usual, just tightening it with a deep socket turned by hand. Again to avoid snapping it. Once it's in, it looks good, and definitely frees up space.

    Seems like a lot for what it is, but compared to a genuine one, and considering @wasz's expenses and the effort he goes to to get them, I'd say they're worth it.

    In short, I'd recommend one.

    When you think of all the work I did on my track day Octavia vRS. 250 BHP engine, limited slip differential, upgraded suspension, quick steering rack, sports cat and 3 inch stainless exhaust, upgraded brakes, lightweight wheels, thicker antiroll bars, bucket seats, harnesses, purpose made harness bar and the list goes on. All for the cost of about 6K including the price of a very good car to start with!

    I know how you feel. I've had a few belters in my day. Noticeably a Bugeye Impreza Wagon and a V70 T5, both tuned to be a hundred times faster than my current 3.2S for less than I bought the Porsche for, even including their purchase price. And the family fitted in them. And all of their luggage.

    But

    I'm telling myself that, this time, I've got a motor that won't eventually depreciate to £0 although I reckon it'll be a long time before our efforts on these early Boxsters are appreciated. 

    I'm looking at my brakes as my next project. I reckon full refurb is the way forward. Get it done, don't have to worry about it for another 20-odd years.

    The costs are high, but as a colleague of mine recently pointed out, folk spend much more money on bikes, and most of them never hold much value.

  10. I think this is about seeing it as a hobby rather than an investment.

    I've had a few cracking cars in my short but colourful life. A fair few of which are now seen as proper classics, but only ever "made money" on two... both times by accident rather than design!

    I say don't try to justify the money you'll spend by hoping it'll increase the car's value, but look at it as money not spent on a golf club/gym membership, fishing permit, in the pub, etc...

    Then it makes sense... ish...

    And man maths tells us that if Boxsters are ever going to be full on classics, it's the early 986s that'll be the sought after ones.

  11. Another voice of agreement with previous replies.

    I've got the eBay box. Was fitted by a previous owner. It does sound great when opened up, but drones like hell on a cruise.

    The sound that annoys me most is a kind of tinny rasp it makes around town. Reminds me of when we were kids and some dudes would put huge back boxes on Vauxhall Novas. They always sounded a wee bit like the engine was struggling to fill the exhaust, if you know what I mean?

    It's one of the things that's on my long to do list. I fancy a full Dansk system, but it's way down the priority list as it's not actually broken/rattling!

  12. Evenin' all.

     

    I've been suffering wet carpets recently and a wee investigation has shown that one of my roof drip tray things and one of my door membranes are split. The drip tray seems kind of rotten rather that damaged, so I'm definitely going to replace both of those. I've also got an array of door rattles to fix, so might as well get some new membranes here as I'm almost certain to tear the good one too.

    Murphy's law, innit?

    Anyway, a quick look around has shown me that these four flimsy little pieces of foamy stuff add up to more that I bough my first car for!

    So, two questions. Does anyone know of a cheap outlet for these?

    What is used to seal them to the door, just in case I do manage to remove the good one without wrecking it?

    And, do 987 drip trays fit in a 986? I might consider getting some late model ones from a breaker, but don't see the point in buying ones the same age as mine, if that makes sense?

    Three questions...

    The temperature looks right... not often you see a fuel gauge reading like that though!

  14. I recently did a suspension refresh on mine. Makes a huge difference. 

    I used the same Spyder arms you posted. They're good quality, and the guys are helpful if you've got any questions too.

    Might be worth checking their website to compare prices to the eBay ads.

    Most important thing is to get it set up properly afterwards.
