martinjohn308
There’s a Porsche specialist in Nuxley village which is nearby went there once a key fob issue were unhelpful so I found Carrera Engineering in Waltham Abbey an hour’s Drive for me. Tony is a top man his place is spotless, old school he has every tool you can think and does a great job, normally very busy so I tend to book well in advance. the baron
I use Cotsworld Porsche for anything beyond my home spannering, I service the car myself, I only use OPC for parts, if they are cheaper than 3rd party’s however most of the time with the 10% discount I get from PCGB it’s cheaper. huytonman
Ive just priced up a major service on my 2003S - i did the oil and filters change last year myself but want a proper check over now and again - this service would include plugs, belt change and brake fluid. Comes out around 550 quid or so plus VAT via a very decent Indie and out of interest I tried OPC Reading for a quote - same job around 1400 quid inc VAT. They would give me a coffee and biscuits and lend me a car for the day...needless to say its not going near the OPC. Keith
hielliot
Revolution do almost all my work, but they are over an hours drive away. My local garage does my tyres, and recently got him to do reverse switch as its a 5 min job with a hoist but i didnt fancy risking my life to get right under the middle of the car to save £10 labour. MOT is also local. Small DIY jobs like ignition switch etc i will do myself.
Rev Ken
Revolution for 'specialist Porsche'' repairs (it means an overnight stay as it is a looooooooooong way from here!). Locally for 'standard' repairs, eg replacing a final drive boot, and MOTs.
Chipps
I've used my local 'Trevor' garage for my 986 MOT and I bought my tyres through them, even though I knew that it'd cost more. They're great guys, can always fit me in and are very slow to invoice. However, they did scuff my wheels a bit when swapping tyres, so they'll be MOT only on this car. (My Doblo will always go to them still) Apart from that, I've used Revolution for everything else. They're a very pleasant hour's drive away (and I can get a 30 minute train back to work from across the road) so it's not a pain to get to. They've been good at understanding where I'm coming from with my car. Service and suspension parts are always OEM quality, but for a couple of odd bits (the rear 'hidden' bumper bar, a CD player bit and a couple of other bits like exhaust brackets) they've got in secondhand bits from the breakers for a decent price, which I've been more than happy with. They know I'm after a well-running, well-maintained car, not something with a sheaf of papers to preserve the resale value. And I'm sure if I told them that I only wanted OEM stuff, they'd do that too...
DavidC
I've only used my local Porsche indy for anything on my 986s. That's included a water pump change, gearbox rebuild, RMS change and IMS upgrade as well as shock top mounts and all lower arms replaced. However it had full OPC service history and is due a major service this month. Opcs are quoting me anything from £840 to £1340. The indy price is£400 including new sparks and brake fluid change. With a car that shook had cull OPC service history, what would you do? I'm sure that when I bought the car OPC menu pricing was only about £200 more than indies, but now that looks more like £1k I think I may be the owner who breaks the OPC history on this car. AMacdonald
My 986 had been taken to the OPC every 6K by its single owner before I bought it. As I don't have a "local" OPC or indie (the nearest is over 70 miles away) I use a well regarded, if fairly distant indie for major or complex work and do simpler stuff like oil changes and suspension myself. I have a very local garage that handles my other cars but beyond MOTs, he doesn't get to work on the Porsche.

I'd get it done at the Indy, unless your car is a collectors item (low mileage, concours condition) it's not going to make any difference. Also, with the OPC, on a 15 year old car you are likely to be given a long list of recommended maintenance running to thousands of pounds. The Indy is likely to give a more balanced assessment of any maintenance required.
The return of Marty Wild
Wouldn’t touch OPC, specialist all the way. I have it from a man that was a Porsche Tech for over 10 years... They get allotted 3 hours to do a full service, get a bonus if it’s done in two. Hence OPC cars have the lower bleed nipples seized on the calipers. They don’t have time to take the wheels off. When I got my Cayman fully serviced at a Specialist, he had it all day. Took the the trays off the bottom, scrubbed them and the wheels clean. Refinished the brake hubs and wheel bolts even. Fully recommend Precision Porsche near Brighton, I live 120 miles away! In the R32 world, there’s tales of people taking their Rs to VW and them killing the AWD Haldex system not knowing it was AWD during an MOT. And other similar horror stories, take them to the specialists, they known the marque inside out and they care about your custom.

It's had so much spent on it already this year that adding another £1k is out of the question. Plus my Indy knows my car's history and the amount of work that's been done this year alone. Delaneycatz
Good decision. Save the cash for either some upgrades or other non essential works. I use a trusted local garage who have some motor sport back ground. They are happy to use the parts I supply and even let me hang around to observe the work being done. I do as much as I can personally and use their skills, tools and ramps when needed. Every once in a while a trip to a specialist is arranged who will have a better eye.
