Aux belt falling off due to pully...

Hi all,

I was on the A1 yesterday and heard some scraping behind me, shortly after I had a bang. I decided to carry on (slowly) to the services which were about 1.5 miles away. I drove slowly but saw the oil jumping up in temperature and the power steering went as well. Worrying thing was that the belt didn't actually snap, so something must have been loose, which to me means some poor servicing!

Got the RAC to come out and he pulled out this:

Question to you guys - If it is just a pully + belt replacement, is this a costly job? Secondly, I had a post purchase inspection not so long ago, should this be something they should have picked up?

The car pre-purchase had [supposedly] been for a major service not so long ago and I am inclined to warn the previous owner of a shoddy job (unless he knew about it, which you'd hope not).

Anywho, I am looking to get the car towed to AMS Porsche on Monday to give those guys a try. Hoping it's not going to break the bank..! Saying that, if the engine needs to come out, would it be worth them doing a proper service as well to save on labour further on? Might be an option for my peace of mind..

What makes you think the oil temp was going up? Were you looking at the coolant temp gauge? If so then quite probable that your water pump has gone.

The auxiliary stuff running off the belt aren't regular service items. They are replace on failure or you can take a preventative approach and replace before failure.

Is that the water pump pulley? Mine did exactly the same thing about 5yrs ago and won't really have anything to do with how the car has been serviced. The belt is bound to fall off if its no longer tensioned.

It's what can happen on an old car unfortunately.

The temp gauge just went through the roof and yes, I do believe that is the case. Was on the list of replacement items that was mentioned on my post purchase inspection but just a little sooner than expected.
