Hi,

When your car says it needs a service, will the diagnostic tool tell you what the car thinks it needs?

If they can, what’s a decent one to buy?

Service indicator on a 987 is a Miles/time since last reset counter with some small amount of smarts. It’s “no more than 2 years/20k miles” but may be less miles based on number of cold starts / short runs.  

service goes minor / major with things like plugs every 4 years, belt every 6 I think, engine air filter every 6.

so all a 987 will tell you is when it last got a service light reset  / how many miles ago that was. 

981 onwards are a bit more sophisticated and can tell “oil service” vs “service” I thinI but not seen that 1st hand.

I have one of these which will read and clear codes and reset your service. Picked up second hand for just over £50.

This is one of the cheapest. Others are available that do a bit more and some I believe will read over revs history etc.
