  1. £120 seems unbelievably cheap.  You should be sure whether he is quoting for a normal refurb, in contrast to fixing delamination.

If it is delamination, they will have to sand all the way through the OEM UV coating as the crazing is on the inside.  The coating used is extremely hard and has to be sanded aggressively. The tricky bit is getting just enough sanded off the lens (across a curved surface) without cutting into the lens.

i had mine done (it was a lot more than £120, but a lot less than nearly £3k for new headlight units) and they have done a great job.

Good luck - a shame Porsche won’t warranty!

  2. Just watched it - really good.

Out of interest, I would assume the engine performance comparison is not entirely true (ie changing the throttle bodies and a remap, [plus exhaust] gives a 981 the 991 performance)?

  3. Funny, a whole thread about my car (and me!) and I didn’t realise.

Been busy at work and hadn’t had a chance to look into the lights until tonight (it’s in storage).  Confirmed it had the washers (and they work) - beyond that, was going to ask on here……

…. However, I have read the thread and am still none the wiser if it has PDLS and, if so, how it came to be on the car.

Will get it to Porsche Dealer at some point and can then resolve the mystery 😉

This was mine fitted with 7mm fronts and 15mm rear. It looks pretty good but the 15mm rears were a touch wide for my eyes and after talking to Daz a more balanced approach made sense so I went with 10mm all round. I had always used the 7/15 setup’s on my 986 and 987.1 and they looked great 👍 I used 5mm all round on the 987.2 Black Edition as the Spyder alloys are 5mm wider on their hub.

Not the best picture 😂 but the only one I’ve got at the moment with 10mm all round.

@Lonewolfgjp or @Raffe any recommendations for sourcing 10mm spacers and bolt sets? Also, do I need new locking nuts?

    Thanks

I picked mine up off eBay delivered for £260 - came from a 2017 Cayman. Wheel was brand new and got the GPS harness which you’ll need from China. All in its about £1750, not cheap but will make a huge difference to driving experience.

About to fit, hoping for it to be straight forward.. 🤞

    Thanks - and the airbag?

  6. Any recommendations / guidance on cost for an airbag for the later Gen steering wheels?

Have some eBay saved searches set up but not confident on buying a second hand airbag…

My 981 wheel is MF with heating (no Chrono) so hoping swap pretty simple…

  7. I will also give a massive 👍 to Paul - squeezed my 987 for a minor service, brake fluid and gearbox oil, ahead of me listing the car for sale.

He quickly spotted an issue with the hood elastic, which he also sorted.

in summary, a fab job by a really nice guy.

I believe he specialises on 986/987, Otherwise he would be looking after my 981.

  8. I have now read quite a lot on crazing  and there are quite a lot of instances of this, not limited to Porsche.

The most positive conclusion is that it is degradation to the UV layer on the lens (say 0.5mm) - ie the structural layer of lens SHOULD BE okay.  It is possible to sand back and apply a UV coating - in reality you won’t know how good the result until you get stuck in - it will be better but not perfect.  This is no different to lens cleaning common in general (eg haze) but you have to sand much deeper.  I have emailed to companies to see if they can do it

It is possible to replace the lens but getting the old one off is a skilled job using mechanical means (ie the glue can’t de softened with heat).  I have found one company in the UK that offers the service and have emailed them.  There is an interesting article in Japanase by a guy that has set up a business just to fix crazing (google translate needed) - the website isn’t confidence inspiring but think the story sounds credible.

All that said, it is cosmetic…

Thank you!  One bizarre thing - I was out earlier in the dark looking at what other options it might have, and under the light of my phone the headlamp lenses are crazed - is that normal / fixable?  Will look at it in the daylight tomorrow

Just googled the lenses …. Not great reading !  Something to add to the to do list (in time!)

A good geeky one is that since you have PDLS/+ (upgraded headlights), you have headlamp washers which are activated by a small button on the bottom of the right hand stalk.  Do it at night and the spray over the lights is cool :)

That looks great.  Love an Agate 981!

Bonus that you've got painted rollover bars and folding mirrors - that's a pretty big spec car - Congratulations

I love the fact that proper enthusiasts spot all of the details.  I have spent literally hours zooming in on car classifieds looking at Center console buttons for PSE!!!!

Don't listen to the haters. Heated wheel is the best option on these. I wouldn't be without mine as its one of my favourite parts of the car.

Just ignore the thumb shifters and let the car do the gears. I generally leave mine in Sport mode always unless sat in traffic.

Do you also have the little clock between the central air vents?

No Chrono - wasn’t on my shopping list.  I had it on my 718 Cayman and didn’t use it!

Nice one looks nice and a very, very good spec, although the heated wheel is nice and rare it might mean that you have the steering wheel with the "paddle buttons" which are an acquired taste but you can upgrade to the 718 wheel if you have the appetite for it.

It has the multifunction wheel with the thumb shifters - very odd they are too! About to read the manual as I can’t quite work out how they work!!

    Congratulations 🎉

Looks great, good colour choice I’ve always liked Agate!

Sounds like it has all the important extras, don’t think I’ve seen a 981 with a heated wheel and looks to have the upgraded headlights 👌

    Very nice and enjoy 👍

How can you tell on the headlights ?  Washer jets?)

  15. I thought the 987 might be a keeper but missed some of the ‘mod cons’ which didn’t exist at the time …. If I am honest, I also regret not getting an S plus PSE - great car to drive but the exhaust noise is a big part of the drama for me!

In terms of the 981, I had never driven one until I just picked mine up and, man, I love it!  It has a perfect spec for me (importantly a heated steering wheel, where I have only ever seen one advert saying it was included!).

By good fortune, it actually came with the original Porsche Price List brochure and by my reckoning has £16k+ of extras. The main ones being;  PDK, PASM, PSE, BOSE, F&R sensors, PSM.

In theory, this one is a keeper!  I can’t justify £70k on a car (I was quite high on the waitlist for an Emira but cancelled), and want a flat 6.  Having owned a 718, I found it a bit ‘clinical’ to drive, so even with a flat 6 not sure I would swap one for the 981 …. But who knows!!!!

First purchase is a Mr12Volt CarPlay unit - beyond that some front grills….

Pictures to follow (once I recall how I did it last time).
