  1. You've got different sized badges!

Did they give a reason as to why they weren't keen on doing the 111 point check? If that's part of the classic membership then they're obliged to book you in.

I've no idea where you can put the badge. I've wracked my brain and gave up. Perhaps on the door interior somewhere, but I haven't looked into it fully.

Indeed - mrs_map has already got me booked in for an emergency neurological assessment.

The shrink will probably suggest something like this: Mrs_map has to reward you. Then immediately give you something else to clean. Then a reward, and so on. Once ingrained, she can gradually taper off the rewards.  It worked for me  😂

That will have knocked 100 kilo off Mat!

Would that be 100kg of dirt off the car ....... or sweat off Map?

Given that the Porsche classic register offers a couple of free washes, I wonder if Map did us proud and took it to his OPC to sort out.  😄

  4. Ashleigh's lights were dull when she arrived. I wasn't prepared to go to the hassle of a full restoration kit (which in most cases isn't needed). I tried toothpaste first which did little to nothing. What worked really well was this: claying the lights then I used Autoglym Super Resin Polish and a LOT of elbow grease. This brought them up brilliantly (without spoiling the clear coat) followed by a coat of wax. They look pretty much like new now.

I have no idea if that would work on a vinyl window, but you could try on a small area.

I keep threatening to have the 111 point check done on my 986 - I fear that so many advisories ...

Oh please do it, the thought is cracking me up.

When I first got Bambi I joined a car club and got offered a free Porsche check. Not knowing what a bunch of grasping shysters they are at the time, I went along and had it done. While it was happening I did drink several capuccinos then realised they would factor that into the cost of anything I might accidentally authorize (£70 for one heat shield bolt as I recall).

Anyway, you should have seen the rap sheet. There was barely a thing on that car which, according to them, didn't need replacing. I immediately went to a Porsche indi for another check and they couldn't find anything wrong, nor did they seem surprised. In the years since then (which are many) only ONE of the things on their list (and I'd wager it wasn't faulty when they looked at it) went wrong and that was the MAF. Everything else is still there (save for tyres, a battery and only a couple of non-costly wear items in recent years).

I also recall that (back then at least - and perhaps still) they had no reservations about displaying some contempt for the 986.

So please, do take your wonderfully grubby car to them for a free wash. I might take Bambi for one, via a local slurry pit.

3 months since I registered - nothing other than a couple of promises to "chase it up" - not that surprised TBH as its the same dealer that hasn't replied to emails re. a few (admittedly small) parts

I found I had to be quite firm in my tone in order to get a response. I'd advise you persist because this is a service you've been offered and I intend to keep going with the reminders until I've got what has been promised.

  7. I'm pleased to say that after registering in October and chasing a few times, my number plate surrounds and badge (in red) arrived today. Still no sign of my classic register paperwork, but hopefully that will follow fairly soon.

Just get a taxi spec bead cover with elasticated sides 😂

30 years ago I had a company car which was a Ford Mondeo - the seats were so horrible I had one of those wooden beaded things. It was painful, but in a nice way (if that makes sense). At the end of each day my bare back looked like I'd been in a torture chamber. 😬

  9. @ATM - good comparison, thanks. My 986 has the standard seats like the right hand one in your photo (with the lines of stitching across) and I find those seats really nice.

I'm going to find, or make, a long shallow pad to go behind me for the Cayman, hopefully it will help because I literally can't drive the thing as it is.

So do they have the wings or are they standard tombstones?

The forum software won't let me upload even a very small image into this thread, so please follow this link to my Imgur and it's the last picture at the bottom:  https://imgur.com/a/czeZmTT

The issue is the way the top of the head rest curves forwards, this pushes my head into the wrong angle meaning my neck isn't straight. The winged bits on the side then push on my shoulder joints.

It sounds to me like you feel too pushed forward in the shoulders and therefore some form of narrow cushion against the back rest could help.  Or sitting on a cushion may raise you up a couple of inches and get your shoulders into an area of the seat with less of a recess.

Yes, I positioned a cushion behind my upper back which did help the shoulder pain a little, but brought on lumbar pain. So I need a full length back support of some kind to push me slightly away from the back rest - they must exist somewhere. Unfortunately sitting on a cushion didn't help.

My VW has fully adjustable seats, I can manipulate every part of the seat sections into a fully customized configuration for as much lumbar or upper body support as I want. I'm guessing newer Porsches will have that.

You could try switching the seats in the 987 to 986 type if they really do work for you.

I wish. The 987.2 (Cayman) is owned by a collector and I'm it's foster parent because he rarely drives, I have permanent use of it. The owner is 6'3" and 12.5 stones in weight - he loves the seats and says they're the most comfortable things ever.

He's of the view that I'm one of an increasing breed of snotty 986 purists who love to look down on other mid-engine Porsches. Must say I've never looked at it quite like that, but with the new respect 986s are getting he may have a point. To be clear, I do love the 987 - just not the seats.

Have you ever had a neck/back injury?  I have found over the years that certain seats or chairs aggravate a lot of pain in my neck up into the base on my skull i.e. C1, to C4 and out into my right shoulder to the point of it being debilitating.  It is suspected that I suffered an undiagnosed vertebra fracture in one of these vertebra in a big road crash back in 1987 when I suffered various other injuries and fractures to my left arm, or in one of a couple of fairly major rally crashes I have had over the years.  I find getting the right adjustment is critical you may find you need to be more upright than you think.  I believe the 987 seat is wider than the 986 in the back so it could be you are not getting enough support, maybe you could look at the opposite that many do and swap 987 for 986 seats if the pads you suggest work out.

Yep - a number of old injuries and bad arthritis in my neck and spine (and everywhere else). Like you I'm hugely sensitive to seats, but usually it's my lower back they aggravate. Normal car seats are fine, but sports seats of any kind can set me off. The issue with me is if my neck isn't perfectly straight - the head section of the 987 seats force my chin slightly downward which is very painful. The side bolsters force my shoulders forwards which hurts - a male/wider shouldered person probably wouldn't experience that.

Part of the problem might be that I suffer from hypermobility syndrome. If some of my joints are in the wrong position they can't support themselves and I can literally feel like they're going to dislocate (shoulder and right hip in particular). Degrees of this aren't uncommon and supposedly it gets better with age, though not in my case. You can diagnose it by touching your toes with your finger tips then seeing if you can progress to getting your wrists on the floor (which I can do).

In my 986 my spine stays well aligned so no problem there, but I do find that my knee pain kicks in much quicker in Bambi than any other car.

  14. I've fiddled endlessly with the seats and the problem appears to be the shape of the upper section and the way the upper sides curve forward. I get quite bad neck and shoulder pain from it - I'm the same with seats on planes. There may be things I can buy to velcro on parts of a car seat to provide contouring and support so maybe that's something I'll look into, to make some kind of custom fit.

I'm not sure why I'm suffering as I'm fairly small (5'6" and 8.5 stone). I've also tried various cushions to see if sitting higher helps.

I'm fine with the seats in my 986, I find them very comfortable and I feel less 'scrunched'.

  15. Before thinking about changing any seats I'd advise sitting for a while in the seats you're considering first, or get out for a drive if you know somebody with a 987.

I find 987 seats unbearable - I get severe shoulder and neck ache and I avoid driving the car because of it. I didn't notice it on the test drive because I was preoccupied with other things. Often seats can feel nice to begin with, then part way into your drive you start to realise they're killing you.

  16. I signed up in early October via Mid Sussex Porsche. Chased them again a couple of weeks ago by email but got no reply. A few days ago I received a copy of the Porsche magazine, but nothing else so far.

I tried popping in a while back but that didn't achieve anything - the girls on the front desk said they didn't know anything about it but with a lot of prodding they did eventually find the form you can fill in (however that isn't a requirement since you can be set up over the phone, which I'd already done).

    Careful, I might be Italian.

    😄 Then go for it!

Nothing wrong with making your car unique, even if you go full-on nuclear tacky (I think Porsches lend themselves to a bit of tackiness). Seriously - it's yours so do what makes you happiest. Not everybody has potential resale in mind. I recently opened a thread on this very subject, after somebody (elsewhere) questioned my plans to colour my brake calipers. I think my overall view is that mods are good fun but I'd tend to focus on the ones which are either subtle or easy to reverse if you grow tired of them and want to revert to original.
