They stopped making the original spec ones and the  various colours after a while and now supply a thinner set in black only.

Original were approximately 12mm thick. The 'new' ones are 6mm.

Mine are Sand Beige. They didn't have them in stock but were able to get them within two working days.

The 12mm to 6mm sounds about right.

It's a shame one I order them it gave me the confidence to really soak and scrub my original mats which have actually come up ok in the end, apart from the fact that the extreme amount of water I had to use has creased up the leather trim quite significantly.

  2. I've just picked up some new mats for my 987 from the OPC - the first replacements in 18 years!

As soon as I unpacked them I noticed that they are much thinner and lighter-weight than the original mats, and have a completely different backing. They are still nice, but I doubt these are going to last 18 years.

    Has anyone else noticed similar?

  3. I took the car out today for the first time in a couple of weeks.

As I was waiting at a red light, I heard a loud 'clonk' and I couldn't work out what it was, but definitely seemed to come from my car rather than those around me.

I got it home, parked up in the garage and left it for a few hours.

Then I took it out again, and within two minutes, the handbrake lever had stopped working, with the button stuck in.

The handbrake itself still appears to work, the action of the lever feels about the same, the warning light comes on the dash and it stops the car from a very gradual roll.

Has anyone had similar? I\m sure that this was the source of the 'clonk' but am surprised that the handbrake still worked for a while afterwards and then failed.

Why did you change the battery? Have you tested the current battery despite it being new.

The battery I took out was 12 years old. It’s generally connected to the trickle charger in the garage, but I was finding that it was weaker after even one night not connected, so thought it was time to change.

I’ve not properly tested the new battery, but it is better according to the CTEK indicator that I’ve got.

    Spiders?

That was a swift (and interesting!) reply.

That is a distinct possibility as I've got a security camera down there that keeps getting set off by spiders. The strange thing is that the car has been parked in the same garage most nights for the last 12 years and it's never happened before last month!

  6. Just before Christmas, my alarm went off overnight while the car was in my garage. I couldn't see anything obvious, so I checked under the carpets to see if they were dry (they were). It didn't recur, so I left it at that.

The today, it happened again! Nothing obviously wrong, carpets still dry. I did change the battery a month or so ago, but I doubt that is having an effect.

Is there anything else I should be checking?

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I once had that with the headlight washers on a 997 after a battery change. As @Paul P eluded to, the handover routine with PIWIS fixed it.

    Thanks Richard.

Yes, it seems to be heated seats and headlight washers that can be fixed by the handover routine, but the windscreen washer isn’t.

It seems as though the battery change is coincidental this time.

I’ll test voltage at the pump if I can get to it without taking the wheel off!

Never heard of that particular "forget" - and since the car had power and you didn't even get the PSM error then I agree it seems unlikely.

Are you sure it worked immediately prior to the battery swap and its not just a fault that you have only just discovered ?

Yes, it was definitely working last time I used it, probably a week or so ago.

The level ran down a while ago and I got the dash warning, so filled it up with fluid then.

The fact there is no pump noise seems to indicate that the battery change has either taken out the fuse or the pump itself.

I've tried removing fuse F10 on row B as that refers to 'Heated Spray Set' as well as Climate Control and Rear Heater. The latter two circuits stop working when I remove the fuse and start working again when I put it back in, so that proves that is good at least.

  9. Further to my thread/question about changing the battery on my 987.1S, I thought everything had gone well, but have now noticed that the windscreen washer has not come back!

When I pull back the stalk, the wipers operate as usual, but no spray. There is no noise from the pump at all.

I've checked the level in the tank and that I've not physically done anything wrong whilst installing the new battery, but all is fine there.

I can't see a separate fuse for the washer, so it would seem unlikely to be that as all other systems appear to be working.

Could it be a built in design fault, like where the car conveniently 'forgets' it has certain options after a battery change? That seems unlikely because the windscreen washer isn't an option, and I left the car on CTEK power whilst changing the battery so didn't even get the PSM/Airbag warnings this time.

    Any ideas appreciated!

I have a Noco jump pack, it has a boost button which is what you would use when you attach to the fuse post in the footwell. I keep the jump pack in its carry case, behind the drivers seat. You should be able to get open the drivers door even with a flat battery and then use the jump pack to open the frunk lid, then use it again across the battery to get the car started.

Edit: the overide button is an exclamation mark

Thanks. I've got the GBX45, which looks very similar and certainly has an override button!

The video ia interesting. I'm assuming that the reason he used the override button to jump start at the battery was because the battery voltage was extremely low, and that a 'normal' jump start just requires the unit to be switched on?

I can’t remember which noco I have but it has a “jfdi” button on it.  A mate used similar noco on a 997 recently - had to press the override before he connected it up and then it worked to pop the lid.

Thanks Paul, useful to know that it can be used in this way.

  12. Thanks again for the responses.

I actually left the CTEK plugged in unintentionally when I changed the battery in the end, I just forgot to remove it!

I didn't get the PSM or airbag warnings, presumably as a result of the CTEK being plugged in, and the heated seats continued working as expected anyway.

Jump packs won't work as mentioned,    I have a CTeK MXS10 which has a 12v supply option.  That works great to put on the fuse box post.

How does the 12V supply work on the MXS10? Do you connect that straight to the fusebox?

I've got the original Porsche branded CTEK unit, and I've found that will actually get a completely flat battery again by leaving it plugged into the 12V socket for an hour or so. I'm not sure that this is advisable though, even that the unit gets very hot whilst doing this!

  14. This is quite a timely thread for me as I've just bought a Noco jump pack and it sounds as though it won't do what I need.

My car sits in the garage on a CTEK charger most of the time, but I've noticed lately when away that even if it is off charge for a day or two, there is a noticeably lower starting power. It's always started, but doesn't feel like it should.

I bought the Noco as an option to charge quickly if it ever failed to start completely, but I forgot that this won't be any good if I can't get to the battery!

I'll keep it anyway as I suppose the battery could be too flat to start the car but not totally flat in some cases.

    New battery ordered!

  15. I’d like to replace the battery in my 987.1S without losing power to the car. The reason for this is that I’ve got the heated seats option which the car sometimes ‘forgets’ that it has fitted after a power outage.

I’ve got the Porsche Charge-o-mat (Ctek) maintainer and a Noco GBX45 which may help here, but want to make sure I do it right!

    Any advice appreciated.

  16. I had exactly the same a few years ago - small chip turned into a large crack after being parked in the sun.

I pushed back on the insurer and they agreed to have it replaced at OPC. I can't remember if it was for the original excess or slightly more for choosing my own supplier, but if it was more it would have been a small amount.

Of less value now but I think back in the day on paper these things were about £4K !

I replaced my PCM2.1 years ago and was pleased to see at the time that they were going for about £700, which was more than I spent on buying the new unit and installing it.

I decided to keep it so that I could return the car to stock if I ever wanted to, and now they are worth much, much less!

Still, it's a fantastic upgrade and makes the whole car feel much more modern so I'm not too worried.

  18. Can anyone help me out with the different H&R spring heights?

@Nick Ccar looks great on the 10mm springs, @Raffecar looks about the same height from the photo but is on the 30mm springs.

It might just be the photos of course!

The ride is absolutely spot on mate, the H&R m030 springs only drop the car about 10-15mm I think so not as low as most lowering springs, ride is really not affected and the car doesn't scrape anywhere, definitely worth every penny.

    Thanks.

Mine scrapers a bit over some speed humps on the standard springs, so I know I won’t be able to avoid that, but it’s good to know that the ride quality works.

This is how mine looks now, really happy with it but I do like subtle changes. I'll try and find a better image later which shows the wheel/arch.

    thanks for all replies. 👍👍20210611_122840_compress.thumb.jpg.9fa3cbba308c5d3d25431bd7439ec55c.jpg

That looks great. How is the ride?

I'd like to go for those springs and upgrade my 18" wheels to lobster claws, but am a bit concerned that doing both will have too detrimental an effect on the ride.

  21. This probably isn't good advice to follow, but I've always just used a CTEK charger when the battery has been flat on my 987.

It's the original Porsche-branded unit, so doesn't have all of the modes or information that the more modern CTEKs do.

The charger gets really hot when charging a totally flat battery, so I normally stay with it, but it never takes that long to get to the level where I can start the car. I then take it out for a drive and put it back on the charger which by then is back to running as cool as it usually does.

I expect that my battery is not in the best of health as a result of it running flat a few times, but it still starts strongly after couple of weeks of not using the car in spring/summer/autumn. I'm fairly religious about connecting it to the CTEK at ll times in the winter as I don't think it would last long otherwise.
