  1. I get this problem & have spent the last few years reaching over when closing the roof to make sure the headlining sits right.

Have tried to get a stapler in there to try & staple the elastic a bit shorter, but that didn’t work so looking forward to seeing other solutions.

  2. Make sure the foam drip tray under the clamshell isn’t perforated. This tends to happen if the plastic ball joints for the roof break, which allows the arm to puncture them drip tray - this could also be a source of the leak. I think some folk have managed to repair holes in the drip tray, they can be difficult to find.

  3. Had mine 10 years this year, has been a great car (hope I’m not about to jinx it!).

Have had an itch for a couple of years about changing it, maybe a 997 or 981. Trouble is, my car has been fastidiously maintained & is immaculate. Every car I’ve tentatively looked at has not got the same level of service history & that puts me off straight away. Probably looking for a unicorn, like we all are when thinking of a change…

I’ve got to tighten the passenger side, so I’ll take some detailed photos and measurements of elastic size etc and get back to you. May be about a week before I get the time to do

    Thanks, appreciated.

    Happy New Year!

The Headliner never sat correctly at the sides when the roof was in the closed position. So I replaced these elastics as well. Your see the before Pic all loose and the after pic, headliner tucks in Nicley at the sides. Not the best pics

Need to do this on mine, getting fed up with reaching over to the passenger side when closing the roof to ensure that the headliner sits properly. Any tips on best practice?

    Cheers.

  6. I picked up a factory painted console a couple of years ago in Cobalt Blue. Idea was that painting it a different colour would be easier that going through the hassle of stripping my existing console finish prior to paint, plus I can swap it back if / when I sell the car.

I’ve still not got around to it… my car is Atlas grey & I’ve often wondered what it would look like with a blue console. I’d much prefer it to be silver though. Also thought about having it wrapped instead.

  7. Alternatively get a new stainless backbox fabricated at a custom exhaust place - they can ‘tune’ them to be as loud / quiet as you want - just ask that they fabricate a new one with stock sound, can’t see that being more than £500.

  8. That’s really bad for them.

Theres a tech from Precision who posts regularly on 911uk & offers loads of insight & advice for Pork owners. They seem like a really good outfit & I hope they get themselves sorted after this set back.

If you are looking for a second opinion, i hear good things about Northway in Reading - not used them myself though https://www.northway.co.uk/

My friend has a 996 and 986 and swears by AutoKraft near Newbury - https://www.autocraftkingsclere.co.uk/

    +1 for Northway.

Very pragmatic in their approach & 100% trustworthy. I’m confident that this can be sorted for a fraction of the price you’ve been quoted by Parr.

  10. I registered for this back in March (from memory, it was that long ago!) & still haven’t received anything.

Frustrating thing is that I recommended it to a work colleague, who registered the same way as I did with OPC Bristol on the same day & he received his pack 2 months ago. I’ve chased OPC who have been particularly unhelpful.

I think Porsche have scored an own goal with this, the whole membership pack thing has been scaled back since the launch - apparently now only one number plate surround, not two & you have to go to OPC to collect, whereas originally these were being posted out. Enamel badge apparently no longer available & I’ve read on other forums that the magazine fails to turn up.

Personally I think it is a big shower of shyatee!

Or just get one which has a liner already.

Yep, got one of those but in my experience they still mark the edges of repainted wheel bolts. A bit of carrier bag stops any slight movement between socket & bolt preventing damage from occurring.

  12. If you paint them with hammerite etc, make sure you line the inside of the socket with a small piece of decent carrier bag material - stops you from marking the new paint of the wheel bolts when replacing.

Thank you all for the information above.
Based on the replies I've done a bit more digging.

There seems to be a fairly common issue in that the engine compartment ambient temp sensor sits between the manifold plenums.
It's held in place by a small rubber grommet. This grommet fails and becomes loose meaning the sensor then falls onto and rests against the manifold.
This tells the ECU that the compartment temp is higher than it should be causing the fan to run more often.

I've not had the engine cover off since I bought the car so this could be just the excuse I need.
Sensor is about £20 and the rubber grommet is a couple of quid...
I reckon when I get the time I'll swap the sensor and grommet out to be sure.

    Thanks

Bit of a thread resurrection, but did you change these out & did it make any difference?

    Thanks.

Hallelujah 😀Success. Thank you Northway Porsche.

I went over there this afternoon to check on whether the Dansk exhaust was supplied with gaskets, clamps and fittings. They took one look at the price for the Dansk (with rear cats) £2002 VAT inc, which doesn't come with all the fittings, they're extra, then a Rapspeed tailpipe £680 VAT inc, then add the cost of fitting I wouldn't have got any change out of £3000, which they said you might just as well buy an original Porsche.

They asked why I hadn't chosen a Miltek which had a better warranty and cost less. When I said that I couldn't source a Miltek for a 987 Gen 1 2006, a quick phone call to their supplier and a price for a Miltek, tailpipes, plus fittings included was £1200 + VAT. It was a no brainer the Miltek was ordered there and then and the car booked in for fitting. The Miltek has a similar sound to the Dansk is a lot quieter than the Designtek and has a much better warranty. I didn't realise that one of the flexible couplings on the Dansk is of suspect quality and that's the reason the warranty was dropped from five to one year.

    Great job!

    Northway are excellent.

  15. Have you thought about visiting a custom exhaust place & getting a system made up to your spec?

Generally you can have it tailor made to your preferences & I’m pretty sure it would be a lot more cost effective than some of those prices. Plus you can have it as loud or as quiet as you want.

Worthwhile investigating TIPEC or Porsche Club GB for any local discounts available. I know there’s a place near Bristol called Infinity Exhausts (I think…) who used to offer discount to TIPEC members.

@Boxer boy hope you mean the 3.2 os well OFF the radar for bore score. It is the 3.4 and 3.6 that suffer this and even then fairly rarely.

    Well said.

Brakes disks and pads changed and when putting on the offside wheel I noticed a letter marked on the disk surface...it said "L" - I checked the box and that had a small L next to the part number. Yes, they are handed and I'd forgotten so sods law has it that with a 50/50 chance I would get it wrong and I did. At least disassembly was fast and easy the 2nd time around apart from the wear sensors that came from Mintex and seem to be made from pastry - both sides crumbled on removal but luckily the originals where fine so they went back on. Before anybody says "having the internal vanes pointing the wrong way wont be an issue with road driving..." it is to me!

Ah, but is it left looking from the front of the car or rear…? 🤔

  18. I swapped out the water pump & thermostat on mine when I had the coolant pipes changed. It was purely preventative maintenance & as the coolant was being replaced it made sense to have them done at the same time.

I went for the Pierberg pump as understand this is the original equipment manufacturer, plus opted for a low temp thermostat - I know that this is more a consideration for the higher capacity engines but it just provides a bit of piece of mind.

Used Autodoc to supply when then had a decent offer on, they seemed to be the most competitive on price when I ordered.

  19. I think the ‘tool’ that you’re referring to is a bulb removal tool, for spotlights, something like this:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/wolfcraft-5499000-Suction-Halogen-Speedy/dp/B0027J282A/ref=sr_1_17?crid=3O702KNHXOVZI&keywords=bulb+removal+tool&qid=1673726401&sprefix=Bulb+remov%2Caps%2C96&sr=8-17

They work a treat & don’t end up damaging the centre caps by using Allen keys / wire / etc. Using anything like this results in damage to the centre cap holes, which lets in water & eventually results in ‘white worm’ on the Porsche crest on the centre cap.

I can't offer any technical advice, but that engine rebuild would be enough for me to walk away.  I know others on here wouldn't be bothered by it though, and if Northway Porsche have got a good reputation it might be fine.  Maybe contact them to see if they can shed any light on it?

Just out of interest, was it a Boxster or a Cayman?

Nowt wrong with an engine rebuild by Northway, in fact I would see that as a positive.

Northway one of the best in the game, with an excellent reputation. Hardly a back street cheapo rebuild, they’re the ones to avoid.

Totally trustworthy outfit, I’ve dealt with them for many years.
