Good to know.. Not something anyone needs to have major concerns about if only a small coolant weep..

Mid engined car where cooling system compromised by design, not sure I’d agree with that…

Any coolant leak isn’t ideal in my opinion.

  2. I drove mine to the Indy for some work to be done…

Front coolant pipes, water pump as a preventative measure, low temp stat & new drive belt.
Also booked it in for a major service, plugs & brake fluid change next month.

So by the time the service is done, this year has so far cost me just over £1 for every mile I’ve driven in the last 12 months just in maintenance costs…

Think I need to drive it more…

  3. Got mine booked into an Indy next month to be changed.

Have had to top the coolant up very slightly over the last 12 months / 3000 miles. There’s a slight bit of white crystallisation around the front passenger hose where it joins the aluminium coolant pipe which I’m thinking is the source of the leak.

Strange thing is that sometimes when I check the coolant level, it’s actually above a marker I placed on the coolant tank, even when the car has been stood a few days. Really can’t explain it & wondering whether I should wait until it’s more obvious where the leak is, if there is one.

  4. Got mine booked in with an Indy next month.

Taxed it & used it yesterday, although I’m not noticeably losing any coolant, there is a white powdery substance around the clip on the top hose which suggests to me that there is a weep. It’s only going to get worse so may as well bite the bullet & at least then I won’t have to worry about it.

Also going to have a preventative water pump change at the same time, it’s done 85k on the original pump & it makes sense to have it changed at the same time when the coolant is drained.

One thing I haven’t decided on yet though is whether to swap the thermostat at the same time for a low temp one, anyone got any thoughts on this?

    Cheers.

£448 seems very reasonable (from indie) cheapest quote for subframe drop £1150 includes geometry where are you maybe worth the petrol

I’d also be interested in who quoted this price, there seems to be huge variance in prices quoted for this job.

On my to do list, I’ve already got most of the hoses but not the actual cross over pipes, just wondering when / who I’m going to entrust the work to.

Heard folks speak well of BAS who do supply only or supply plus fit. South Wales based iirc

    https://www.car-hood.co.uk

    Was about to suggest BAS.

Not used them myself, but my father has had a BAS hood on his MX5 & also had then recently fit a 986 hood.

Look to be of decent quality & the customer service is good too. There were a few little wrinkles on the 986 hood after installation which they advised would disappear after a couple of weeks. Unfortunately they didn’t so they replaced the whole hood without quibble.

  7. Not sure I would have wanted to drive it to local garage without the belt, unless it was literally around the corner. The water pump would not have been operational & potentially would have run the engine quite hot…

I would have requested the RAC recover the car to the garage to avoid any issue with boiling the engine.

Yeah just fixed with the one screw that is visible in pics. Don't have a template. Just cut the rubber till I thought it looked the right shape. The rubber is 4mm thick. I know they're not brilliant but they do the job.

It’s a good idea & I’m going to have a go at this myself when I source some rubber. Thanks for posting 👍

I need to buy some more oil to top the car up with, was wondering if it was worth buying some 5w40 instead of 0w40 as standard.  I’ve read this an option as the car gets leggier.  I’d then ask the Indy to do the same when it’s due an oil change in May.

Any recommended brands? It looks like there isn’t a Mobil1 version?

    There is a Mobil version - https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/mobil-super-3000-x1-engine-oil-5w-40-5ltr-521772121

It’s what my Indy uses. Have had it in mine for the last 3 years with no complaints, but then my oil is changed every 3k & is as clean coming out as going in, thankfully!

I rubbed the rust spots down, primered them, touched them in and then spotted on some lacquer. I then added some small rubber flaps, for want of a better word. They look quite obvious in the photos as the rubber was new and the flash has also made them stand out but they're not actually that obvious. I do 70, mostly motorway miles a day and I have no more chips. Must have had them on for about 2 years now.

Great idea, are they just fixed with the one bolt for the wheel arch liner?

Don’t suppose you have a template for them?

    Thanks 👍

  11. Mine gets done annually, regardless of mileage, which is usually under 3k miles every year.

Probably the best preventative maintenance you can do on an engine in my opinion. 👍

  12. Yes & yes.

I think some Indy’s have a menu price for retro fit.

My 987 had cruise retrofitted by the OPC when it was a couple of years old.

Dead easy and straight forward to disassemble and replace. Just make sure the plastic pins go back in the right way (front to back i think). Otherwise the switches wont spring return. Its an easy mistake to make, so just test them before you put it all back together.

    Cheers 👍

Hopefully they’ll turn up tomorrow so can have an evening in the garage sorting it out… Will save me from the cr*p on TV that the Mrs insists on watching!

Just fit the spyder ones to mine.

got them from spyder off ebay with a 35quid offer

text size is slightly different but not an issue

overall I'm very happy, they look 1000 times better than my old sticky scabby ones and a breeze to fit  👍

Just ordered a set for mine.

Any hints or tips for installation? Seen the YouTube videos & seem pretty straightforward…
