interesting, though i didnt think it would be the reason why my pedal was getting stuck on the floor - i guess its the helper spring keeping it held down when it does get stuck. i've read that some people remove the helper spring altogether for a more 'natural' albeit slightly heavier pedal, but i'll see how i get on with just a new slave cylinder for now.

If it helps, I have a broken clutch helper spring.  Every time I put it in for work, the garage comments on how stiff the clutch pedal is.  I think I've just got used to it so don't really notice.  What does happen is if I brake really hard with the clutch pedal depressed, the pedal stays flat on the floor.  The type of thing you do when you emergency stop.  I have to stamp on it a couple of times before it releases and returns back.  It hardly every happens in normal driving, but I can 100% reproduce with a clear stretch of road.  I have thought about doing it, but it doesn't look like a particularly nice job so will probably leave it to the pros.  I've also been keeping my eye out for helper springs, but they don't seem to be that cheap.  If nothing else major comes up in the next few months I may get it done at the next service.

  2. On Sunday I attempted to clean some bird 💩 off my plastic rear screen.  As I put pressure on it, I pushed the screen out 😂.  Just to make sure I did it again and now the bottom part of my screen is no longer attached to the hood.  All the stitching has let go.  All fixed with lots of gaffa tape, but will now be looking at a glass roof.  I had the plastic replaced when I first got the car and I think I prefer the look and originality, but the practicality of glass is drawing me in.  Just need to work out which is best in retaining as much access to the engine bay as possible.

That last invoice would worry me! Loss of coolant, customer topped up multiple quarts of oil, investigated and cylinder 6 has a leak and low on compression.  That would indicate a cracked cylinder head to me.

Agree, my first boxster had a cracked head and lost coolant, when running warm/hot there was no evidence of any leak.  But when running from cold there was plumes of white smoke/vapour coming from the exhaust

I would be most grateful 🙏

Have a look at my running report.  I had my outers painted chrome and they looked good.  Lasted quite a few years, but they do eventually chip leaving the grey primer on show.  I've recently had the wheels refurbished and this time I went back to diamond cut as IMO they look better.  I have pics of both on my thread.

ive got to the stage where i need to actually connect the wires - everything else is done - i hadn't even thought about whether the live is perm or not. that adds an extra spanner in the works.

    what year is your car?

hi mate, mine's 2002.  I ran a switched live from the fuse board in the end, not as difficult as it sounds. I put a fuse add-on into A6 which is for the missing heated seats (so technically didn't need the add-on) and ran a wire from there to the centre console and then split it to drop down to underneath each seat.  Then used the ground that was already there.  It doesn't take too long to get the centre console out and was easy to fish the wires under the carpet.  I'll update my running report when I get a chance, but the heated seats now go off when the ignition is switched off.  I'm pretty happy with it, but I don't get much/any clearance behind the new switch and when I sit on the seat it pushes the switch out slightly.  I think it's because they are sports seats, but when I get a chance I will remove the spade connectors and solder the wires to the back of the switch.  I think it can be done without removing the seat.

  6. Just had a go at this, instructions say take the live from the red wire already in the seat connector, but this is permanent live?  Has anyone already done this? Do I need to take switched live from the fuse box and if so, how do I do that?
I don’t want to have to remember to turn the seat off each time I’ve finished driving

  7. Not all today, but in the last month

    1. Replaced my ignition switch with one that I've had for about two years!

    2. Still had problems starting, so after much diagnosis had a new alarm control module installed and keys recoded

    3. New horn

    4. New boot and frunk struts

    5. Changed interior bulbs to LED, came in a kit so did the number plate and boots too

    6. Tidied up some arch paintwork from stone chips and damage from a minor off

    7. Had a new condenser and long A/C pipe replaced as although A/C was still cold I could hear the compressor starting to make a noise

    8. Replaced my manifold flange to CAT bolts with a new gasket as one side was blowing

    9. Replace my under windscreen scuttle with a good used part as one of my fixings had broken

    10.  Cleaned up all the plastic in the frunk after the new scuttle showed them up

    11. Replaced my high level brake light with a used part as a couple of the bulbs had gone.  Realised once it was out that I could actually replace the bulbs doh!  But the used part was only £15

    12. Had my Sport Design alloys refurbished for the second time and put them back on with new bolts and centre caps

    13. Decided to keep the car

Will try and clean it over the weekend and will update my running report with the details and some pics

100%. When you go from old to new overnight the difference is very noticeable. When you have a car for years you don't really notice the deterioration. When you buy a second hand one they will nearly all be in a similar state for the suspension unless you get lucky and can try back to back a newly refreshed car.

I'd also add the other thing that made the biggest impact after my suspension refresh was the new engine mount.

So you bought a Boxster to commute? If you got that mileage you certainly did nothing else with it.

I've used it for everything including a lot of Motorway miles.  I concede I could have bought a Corolla, it certainly would have cost me less.

At the moment yes, just not getting out, working from home, no client visits and when I do I tend to jump in the Discovery, I know, its no excuse but my ballistic mileage is still at 210000 and has been since March 😳 was hoping to be at least on 220000 by now.😢

Had you firmly in my sights at one point and thought I could catch your mileage, but change of jobs and COVID mean I've gone from 24k miles a year down to 7k!  I too thought I'd be well past 200k by now, but still at 187000

    Hi

I had the perfect jar and then dropped it during construction, so ended up using a smaller one with a quite powerful mattress pump. I just watched a few videos and versions then cobbled together using what I had. I did use baby oil and some cotton tshirt for the "bath" at the bottom of the jar.

I wanted to cover the whole system post MAF so I disconnected the pipe from the airbox and MAF, covered the end of the pipe with a rubber glove and pumped air in via the MAF hole. I also pumped smoke in via some easily accessible pipes after also just to make sure I had the whole system covered. I not only discovered my leak but also a blockage (where the SAI check valve plugs in) because smoke should have come out but did not!

My pump was a bit too powerful but I just pulsed it to push smoke around the system. Really you want either 2 people or a powered air supply so you can concentrate on looking for smoke.

    All the best

    Berni

    Thanks Berni,

I'll try the rubber glove tip and will give it another go.

    Thanks
    Lee

    Hi

I made a smoke machine and found my air leak today :). I just hope it stays fixed!

Do you have any more details on this?  I tried a while back using the soldering iron and jam jar technique, but my iron heated up the metal lid and it all fell apart.  I'd also be interested where you tapped into the vacuum system?  I'm tempted to have another go

That’s great! Glad to hear it encouraged you. Only thing I’d add would be to replace the bolts securing it with new ones if you can get them.

Just to let you know, I removed my water pump today after another quick refresh of your vid this morning lol.  Lots of great help thank you.  I think the tip to release the hose was the most helpful, I honestly thought I wouldn’t be able to get it off until I used the grips to release it.  I’ll update my running report, but wanted to say thanks.  I have a new pump being delivered and need to fit it, but have a new found confidence 👍🏻

Will take pics when she is back. I took the DSC off my 997.2RS before J sold it. It made a material difference to that car on and off circuit. That had more carbon and Alcantara on it than one could imagine. Desperately resisting the spend on the Boxster!

I don't want to derail this thread, but do you have any pics? New thread perhaps?

Agreed.  Cant go wrong with Brembros

I'd never been completely happy with my 986 brakes to the point that I had the brake servo replaced.  This improved things and I generally put it down to the lack of assistance and the fact that our Q5 has over aggressive brakes.  Then on one pad and disc change, Bremos popped up at roughly the same price so I went with those instead of the Pagid ones I'd used before.  The Brembo's were significantly better.  Much greater stopping power, I wouldn't use anything else now.
