I went a cheaper route and fitted a 992 GT3 one....now I'm struggling to get my Cobb to talk long enough to change the gearshift direction.

Is changing the shift direction a matter of coding somehow, or is it a  mechanical change that is required?

I don't think I would notice the little +/- , I have never really looked at the original that closely 🤔

Whilst the 718 pdk layout is correct and logical, and the 981 PDK somewhat counterintuitive, My OCD would not let me have the +/- the wrong way round for the car

  3. The 718 pdk manual shifts are in the natural position of push forward to downshift,  back to change up.

The early 981 pdk gearboxes operate in the opposite, counter intuitive order of push forward to change up, pull back to change down. (I can't speak for later 981 PDK gearboxes)

So the 718 RS shifter +/- markings on the top of the shifter would be incorrect

  4. For info,

The bolts holding the badge on are very soft. They almost look like they are single use. They have an alloy head with a brittle wax style core that looks like the coarse badge thread cuts into. I'd definitely have new ones a replacement plan. The old ones seemed to disintegrate on removal and they would strip if over tightened

The foil sticker covers the three large holes in the bonnet. The only water entry point with this fitted would be the badge stud threads, that have the wax filled bolts on them.

  5. A well respected  and highly recommended race setup place in Hillington. Near glasgow will do a full geometry and fast road set up quoted me at £180

    https://www.kbmengineering.co.uk

i’ll go there once i get a new set of tyres fitted

i found this a really interesting watch about how a proper mechanic sets up the geometry of a car

  6. I assumed he was looking for coloured crests. My enquiry was in relation to what colour of centre cap he was looking for, as his requirements will depend on his wheel colour.

I have spare black caps with coloured crests

  7. I called a small well respected specialist gearbox repair firm in Glasgow that i have used before to rebuild a BMW mini gearbox a good few years ago to see if this was something he could do .

I had a really good chat with him and In short, the answer is no.  He wouldn’t take the job on - it is too much of a hassle.

by means of experience, he hasn’t taken a 981 or 718 manual gearbox apart, but he said he owned a 987 boxter S with the 3.2L and 6sp manual ans he took it apart as he lost 2nd gear and it was a royal PITA - he managed to get it apart, but it was exceptionally hard to work on and he was at hte point of breaking it / tools taking it apart.

he said depending on what damage there is internally to your Gearbox (stripped teeth etc, you could be £2-4k in parts alone from Porsche parts dept plus 10+ hours at £100/hr to break apart and rebuild - a whole heap of pain.

His recommendation was source a second hand gearbox or speak to someone with experience of opening these up - perhaps one of the firms that changes ratios? They are more familiar with the time and process of repair, and likely costs.

and find out what your £8500 repair bill from Porsche includes … is that supplied and fitted? Or is it a pallet gearbox that still needs fitted? (Plus obviously factor in a clutch change when it is out.

    hope that helps

    Good luck

  8. I fitted a new rubber gasket, two new bolts and most significantly, the foil sticker that blocks the three larger holes between in the bonnet beneath the badge was missing (which i now replaced) - i guess the bonnet has been off and repainted at some point in the cars history and the foil sticker has not been refitted . I suspect the foil sticker is the answer to the water ingress.

Let’s see if this solves the problem.

Top one is OEM plastic and mesh same as 981.

    New one is glass Windschott.

Much better rear vision and significantly less wind buffering and in my opinion much better looking.

Agree, as you know, I've got a high Windschott wind deflector in your old 🔴 981 and it is a significant improvement over the mesh one in terms of rear visibility 👍

  10. Out of curiosity, Can anyone shed light on why my 981 BS (without Sports design pack (SDP)) appears to run about 102-105C in normal mode, but the engine temperature drops to around 92-95C when in Sports mode?

If i recall corrctly, GTS and cars with Sports Design pack have a third central radiator that comes on line in when sports mode is selected to improve cpooling , however I wasn't aware of this in non SDP cars. My central front bumper section is solid

Any reason why im seeing this drop in engine temp in my car?

  11. i'd speak with https://www.nmautomotive.co.uk/pcmsalesandrepairs.

they might be able to help / advise

    or upgrade to a PCM3.1 with them?https://www.nmautomotive.co.uk/product-page/pcm3-1-head-unit-2-991-1-981-1-all-variants

but the issue wold be you are probably missing the GPS antennae if your car came withthe CDR31, that is without nav.

what about buing a unit off ebay for spares / repair? - if it works in your car as is, great, and if not, you can open it and scavege the ribbon cable from the ebay unit

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/305037061678?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=WEL8PTQGSjK&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

  12. A bit more relevant to this thread,

What would happen you put a copy of  SSD made from one pcm into a different pcm to replace a corrupted  / failed PCM HDD?

Would it work? Or would the fact the SSD was made from a HDD tied to another VIN mean it would not work?

  13. Gasket appears OK,, the fixing bolts however have a plastic sleave / bushing that is all broken apart, do this might explain either water getting in this way, or not being able to tighter the badge down against the rubber gasket, so allowing water to get in. I'll pick up a couple of new bolts and see if this addresses the issue
