@Freddie did this fix your issues, i think i may be having a similiar problem. My stalks work fine just indicator flashing stops after a few flashs or doesnt come on at all.

Would any brand of elec contact cleaner work? WD CC is only £7, bit different to your suggestion.

    Hi bud,

The contact cleaner did help initially, but the fault came back, so in the end I just replaced the whole unit with a brand new one and it's all fine.

I keep meaning to pull the old one apart t see what was wrong, may even be able to repair and keep on the shelf.

Worth trying the WD one, I think Deoxit leaves a protective residue and came recommended on the 928 forums, 928s being old and full of wires.

Hope this helps, perhaps update this thread if it does work, helps us all out 👍

    Good luck mate

  2. I got the DeWalt one as well, so much torque it could flip the car over, love it, there's nothing stopping it, did all my suspension front end last year and clutch, flywheel bolts came out with ease. Highest torque you can afford, as others have said. I have heard that you can preset the tightening torque on the Milwaukie one, which would be great if accurate Good luck!

  3. Quick update, I wangled a stainless jubilee clip around the middle of it and it's now silent. Just tight enough to clamp in place without stripping the thread on on the clip, I'll check it again in a couple of weeks when I do the spark plugs and coil packs. Happy for now, sounds lovely on idle again :)

  4. Thanks guys for all your replies, I'll see if I can get a couple of clips on tomorrow; at first glance there was very little meat left on each end to get a jubilee clip on but I may be wrong - I'll check again and remove if I can't keep it in place.

Thank you again, very helpful of you all.

  5. Hi all,

Just wondering what others have done about rattly heat shields, not the main one over the cat, but the long sleeve one that sits on the pipe with the hole for the O2 sensor. See attached image, the thing with the cross-hatch pattern on it is what's very loose on mine and rattles like a skeleton having a w@&k in a biscuit tin!

    Many thanks, in advance :)

  6. If it helps @Jimbop90 , I wouldn't describe myself as particularly good with the tools either, but also have done quite a lot of jobs on the boxsters I've had - if you can tackle suspension work then a clutch, with the right tools, should be OK for you to do. I did my 2.5 clutch this year in my garage, took my time over a 2-3 months when I had a spare hour here and there and with the help and advice here, particularly @TROOPER88 it was fine to do.

Tools - the one thing I would recommend is a transmission jack which I got for 100 odd quid, you will be confident that the 'box won't fall off and kill you. And a 20 quid rms tool to tap it in to the right depth. Also handy to have a high torque impact gun to get the flywheel bolts out. Other than that just basic tools. And take your time.

On reflection, I am so glad I did it myself, yes I saved money but knowing you can do this particular job is a real confidence booster. I am now planning to do the clutch on my 986 S next year.

Also, with the 'box out you can see and get a better understanding of how other bits are put together, and inspect and replace other things a lot easier with it out the way. You can also clean all the crud off everything; I polished and painted everything I could before it went back on, and new ARB bushes are inexpensive to buy. The other things is that you will be more careful than a garage mechanic has time to be. And, having done it yourself, if something needs attention you will get to it in half the time if you have to strip it back down to rectify.

I didn't do the IMS as it's a 2.5 dual row. I have also adopted the 'it would have gone by now' philosophy.

There's a very helpful set of videos that Burner did, I followed these whilst I was doing mine. Handy to see someone else's trial and error beforehand.

As for if it all goes t!ts up, some garages will recover a car locally if you need it, but as you say a mobile mech could dig you out of a hole. But anyway it is not as bad as you think, as others have said, it's a nut and bolt job. And 100% buy new parts - good kits are available, renew everything in the bell housing and give it a cleanup. You may or may not need a new flywheel, there's a simple test you can do with it on the bench. Worth doing but they're not cheap.

As I have the hands of a typist, soft and not strong, good tools and gloves help.

Hope this helps you decide, don't pressure yourself, have a go and take your time is my advice. And buy gloves!

I’ve ordered 6 new coil packs and 6 new spark plug, all Beru from AUTODOC. Seemed like false economy to change the coil packs and not the plugs. I’ve ordered from Autodoc before and it generally takes a week.

Thank you all for your sage advice. I’m hopeful that this will solve the problem as the one intervening factor was the water.

Not to hijack the thread but before I order a set of coil packs, when you get your order are you able to update us as to whether these ones we're correct fitment, please?

  8. Hi all,

Quick update - I spent hundred odd quid on a replacement stalk, then after the helpful comments above and a moment of clarity, I decided that before fitting it it might be a good idea to poke the long Deoxit spray nozzle tube right inside the indicator arm assembly and give it a bit of a jiggle and a squirt (ooer missus) and several jiggles later - success, the left indicator now works again! Clearly there has been a build-up of some form of oxidisation, somewhat cleared by Deoxit.

If it helps others, if you look closely into the opening where the arm goes into the housing, you can just about see the metal terminals, so a spot of electrical lube can be applied and worked in. Not so much as it's dripping into the footwell but just enough to reach the parts you need it to get to.

Oxidisation probably exacerbated by damp conditions of late, even with my car being kept in the garage. To me, subject to debate, it is further justification to keep using the car as regularly as possible throughout the year.

I had some Deoxit left over from giving my old 928 a good going over, this stuff, chuffing expensive but cheaper than a new stalk. Which I bought in haste:

Thanks guys, for your input, I may keep the unfitted spare indicator set but if anyone needs one give me a shout.

Will second the left indicator not cancelling, seems to be quite common and a weak point in the design. When it happened to mine, there was a clear crunch from the stalk while pushing it down. If you do need to replace the stalk and don't have cruise control, it's a great opportunity to retro fit it. Should be plenty of threads on here about it.

    I'll check that out, thanks

Logical explanation might be loom wiring to the stalk-possible connector issue to indicator wand would be a good starting point.

Thanks, yep, I will pull it apart and see what's going on.

I wondered if the relay may be at fault, but I think I am right in saying that there is one flasher relay #3 on the top row that does the hazards and turn signals, which just flashes whatever is fed through it, I can't see any diagrams that suggest each has it's own flasher relay.

Thanks for your input, I've ordered a replacement stalk set anyway as it will probably come in handy sooner or later.

  11. Hi all,

My left turn signal packed up this morning, got beeped at by the ubiquitous white van person up my harris!

The hazards work OK and both turn signals on the dash flash when operating, it's only when I try to indicate left that neither the dash light or the indicator itself flash.

I am aware that there's a common failure where indicators stop self-cancelling - mine does return OK and appears mechanically sound otherwise.

Assuming it's a chat with Steve Strange for a replacement stalk unit?

    Many thanks in advance

    Great job!

Get that adapter for the Aux and then you've got bluetooth for all your music.

Thanks buddy, yep I’ll do that, do you recommend any particular?

My travails with getting a CDR22, which was jammed unwired into the dash when I bought my car (I also got an old Alpine that had been fitted)  are listed in another thread. That unit is now up and running but only works intermittently for radio and has no CD function so I have also been keeping an eye out for an original head unit. I quite fancy the idea of a cassette player in a 90's era vehicle and could also be interested if Freddie doesn't take it off your hands.

Just updating you, I’ve bought minidisc unit from steve strange, which is what my car had when new, so I won’t need the cassette head unit after all. I appreciate your help though, thank you .

Keeps it original I suppose, the 996 has a cd changer from new  so I presume that links to the CR22 so cd play would be possible nut please check on that

Thanks, yes that crossed my mind as well. Another forum member has a changer and amp that I can buy. I'll let you know if I decide to go that route. Thanks again bud!

Yes indeed you are correct, I’ve never looked at it as it came with my 996 which had already got an upgraded head unit fitted.

Thanks mate, I appreciate your effort, if I don't pick up a cdr I'll have that off you

I’ve got a lovely CR-22 with original manual and code card, not sure what the difference is, pm me if interested.

Thank you, however the CR is just a tape player I think, is it definitely not a CDR? If it is a CDR then I'll have it
