  1. Glad to hear all is well! 

    As I suspected, had a similar problem with mine but I just put cardboard underneath it to catch any drips, eventually it stopped and it's never had a problem since. .

  3. If it is the RMS, it may stop dripping after driving your car. I remember I bought mine around 5-6 years ago, and it wasn't driven much, had a service at revolution and it dropped a few blobs in my garage, I put some cardboard underneath it to monitor it. A few weeks later, as it was daily driven, noticed there was no new oil drops on the cardboard so threw it away... 6 years later... No issues to report!

    So maybe you just need to drive it and "it will sort itself out"?

    misfires on one side of the engine... it could be the variocam solenoid? I had that issue on mine... expensive fix 😕

    yeah I was quite surprised myself! It has had all the work done on it, but from my research they don't really test drive the cars, just make sure it moves and stops? 

    Then proceed to take off 3.5K for random stuff on a 24 year old car :P

  7. Also - how hot was your car? I mean when I did mine the fans were cutting in and out. So it was really hot. Just curious as to why the garage would say it wouldn't make a difference if it's hot? Or have I misunderstood ? 

  8. Do you have error codes for oxygen sensors? 

    Generally the idea is to get the cats RED RED hot, and then it should be fine to pass emmissions. 

    I had my MOT last week, got the car really warm and passed with no problems at all. 

     

    Other things to check for are exhaust leaks. A leak will put you out of spec.

    I really don't know how D911 actually stay afloat with their ridiculous prices and poor customer service! Have used them twice in my Porsche ownership. First was a fuel pump for my 924 - a week later the car broke down, yep you guess it - faulty fuel pump. 

    Second time was order some service items for the boxster, said would take a week, cancelled it and never used them again.

And, with a fair wind and following seas, it'll be many thousands cheaper than that. 

     

    When I bought my Boxster, it needed a suspension refresh, something I was aware of, but being decent with a set of tools meant I saved a lot of money DIYing a lot of jobs. 

    I feel buying an older car is always a risk, and hopefully one that pays off! At the end of the day, would you rather be driving a Golf or a 911? That pretty much always answers it for me.

    Depends on your budget - I felt that 996 prices will be near out of reach by next year, right now on there aren't many or any decent ones for under 13K - and a lot of them do have high mileage (not always a bad thing of course!) I remember a few years ago, you could pick a nice one up for 10K easily, and a maybe decent one for under that. As the days seem to be passing by, they are just going up in value and close to the bottom end of the 997 market. 

    I was going to sell the Boxster, but not really the time to be selling. It flew through its MOT last week, so I've just decided to keep both for now. My philosophy is YOLO + they want to get rid of anything with a combustion engine asap so might as well enjoy it whilst I can!

  12. Seems to be a bit of a theme here. 

    986 Boxster into a 911 996 C2, but don't really have the heart to sell the 986 Boxster. It even flew through its MOT yesterday for me! 

    So just ended up keeping them both for now at least - and both are very enjoyable to drive in their own unique ways really.

If it does require attention, it could be something that isn't anywhere near intensive as a rebuild. You should get an opinion from a trustworthy professional who is familiar with the M96 engine. Whether it required a rebuild / replacement engine at this stage is hypothetical.

    Regarding the rebuild / replace engine / break car / etc - my 2p as somebody who's dealt with terminal engine failure. There is no right answer - there are too many variables with both the car, and the owner.

    My learned friend whose car has had more engines than clutches will correct me, but if you take the engine apart, you're at (a minimum) £2k in parts just to put it back together, as is. This figure is a constant, and covers things like gaskets, seals, bolts, etc. This excludes labour, and replacing anything that has actually broken / is worn out. Without actually knowing what's broken, it's possible to go down the rabbit hole.

    The ballpark figure I had for a "basic" rebuild to include chains / guides / bearing was £4k. Suspect that figure would have been easily doubled if I'd gone down the rebuild route, to fix what was actually wrong with it.

    A good friend managed to source me an engine with 24k miles for just under £4k, which is the route I went down. Parts and labour all in, came to just under £5k. This included fluids, filters, plugs, and preventative maintenance such as AOS and water pump - all / most of which would be on top of any quote received for a rebuilt engine. I was lucky procuring my replacement engine at that price. I certainly wouldn't advocate buying an unknown engine with six figure miles at £3k.

    The £5k, added to the £2.5k I was offered for the car as a non-runner would have given me a pot of £7.5k for a different car - this wouldn't have got me a car I'd be happy with without spending even more money on it. If the car was otherwise a dog, with a knackered interior / exterior, and feked suspension, I'd have bought another one. Your own car may be at either end of the spectrum, or somewhere in between.

     

    TLDR:
    You first need to determine what's up with your own car. If it does need a rebuild (and it may not), you're doing well if you manage this for under £6k. Then you need to ask yourself whether it's worth (to you - not random people on the internet) fixing the car, and if so, could it be more cost effective getting a replacement engine.

    I may have missed something recently... did your yellow boxster need a new engine recently? 

  14. I've had my car (2.5 986 Boxster) for over 5 years now but one thing that has always bugged me is the poor stock headlight bulbs! As the days seem to be getting shorter and night driving will become more frequent, I wanted to make sure this year I can see at night 🙂 

    What have others used to improve visibility when driving at night? Saw this video Porsche Boxster 986 Super bright headlight upgrade . Auxbeam F-16 LED - YouTube and they seem good and bright, but not sure if they will burn the headlights? They are available on eBay for under £30 AUXBEAM Car 72W 8000LM H7 LED Conversion Headlight KIT 6500K Bulbs Xenon White | eBay.

    Any suggestions much appreciated!

I've had some problems with mine, one of them seemed to die on me, the other one was interesting - twice the brake lights have been constantly on, once during the MOT - got it home, and fixed it and second time this happened a few weeks ago, I just played around with it in the garage and its working OK now. 

     

    Got the part from ECP if that means anything lol.

  16. Some smoke is normal on start up. 

    A failed AOS will result in a nice cloud of white smoke - theres a few videos on youtube to demonstrate.

  18. Interior looks too worn for 5K miles - mine has around 80K miles and the driver seat isn't that bad, especially the bolsters. 

    Also, with 5K miles - there would be the worry about the IMS - someone on youtube purchased a 2.7 Boxster with 20k odd miles and when he took it to Porsche for a clutch I think it was they said that he was lucky he got there in time to save the IMS and car.

    EDIT: going through the pictures, there is a lot of wear on the interior controls and small scratches which suggest it's either not a 5k mile car OR has been very abused in its life.

    I used Strasse Porsche in Leeds to inspect a 996 recently.  It was £150 plus VAT.  Worth its weight in gold as although described as being in superb condition, the car had a LOT of issues including a ticking/knocking engine, badly leaking coolant tank, lots of suspension issues etc etc.

    A bit odd to say it's superb but then has a lot of issues including ticking/knocking engine noises 😂
