    Hi

I have a Cayenne diesel 2013 in addition to my 981. To be honest its great, always hankered after a GTS around the same era though, seems prices are reasonable at the moment, perhaps because of the fuel crisis. On the basis that petrol cannot be the current price forever (!) does anyone have any real world experience of mpg  on one of these?

    Cheers

I know things have moved on a bit, but my 2004 Cayenne S 4.5 V8 returned about 15 to 16 mpg just using it as a daily. A good run would get it to about 22/23 mpg. Great noise though !

@Steve Laming@Geoffcollyer I noticed after clearing the CEL (specialist did this for me using Durametric) it stayed off for a certain mileage/duration before coming back on despite the misfire (variocam bank1 issue) persisting. I don't think this is related to the fuel here.

Update. Sorry I don't think either Geoff or me updated this feed.

Variocam issue, diagnosed and fixed by eporsch.

The first mechanic said it might be this......however he changed all 6 plugs and coils packs. After about a day the CEL came back on, so was booked into eporsch. They had a long waiting list, so I think we both forgot about this topic !

    Steve.

  3. UPDATE:

Halfords ones are a much looser fit and although the light comes on it quickly goes out again if not held in position.

The fitter chap then got an original Tom Tom one and it was the same as mine, that also had the issues above.

I then put my one back in and if pressure was put on it (towards gear lever) then the light would stay on.

So, just need to find something in the garage to keep the USB plug in the forward position, and Bobs your Uncle (or the chap in the blue Boxster!)

    Thanks for all your replies.

    Steve

Had a challenge in a different car in a similar way - the tomtom plug just wasn't reaching the bottom effectively - I solved it by getting a decent ( Anker )dual usb adapter and then just using the tomtom cable in the adapter - double adapter meant I could charge my phone as well.

Yes, I will possibly go this way with a double adaptor Paul. I will pop down to Halfords and see if I can try a few different ones !

@BBB is right. The power lead for a Tom Tom is a standard mini USB connector, so try another. More likely the lead than the cig socket in the car.

It works perfectly in the 986 and the BMW but not the 987 Cayman. As I mentioned before, it is a very tight fit in both Cig socket and the one under the arm rest.

I will have another look in the passenger footwell. You tube/google first !

I don’t think there’s anything special about the TomTom power supply, so you can use any high current USB charger. All three of my sockets work with connectors, so yours could be loose through wear? I have found some really cheap adaptors are loose in other cars, so it’s worth finding one that fits well.

When using anything that requires power and is mounted on the dash I use the socket in the passenger footwell as it keeps the handbrake/gear stick area clear. You might find it works better is it hasn’t been used as much.

I had a quick look in mine before I went away. Couldnt find one. What side is it on ? Passenger footwell one that is.

  7. I wonder if anyone else has an issue with the plug in bit for a Tom Tom.

I plugged my power lead in to the Cig lighter and the little power light didnt come on. The Cig lighter worked perfectly.

I tried it in the centre armrest port and it didn't work there either.

This was especially annoying as I was in France at the time and didn't know how to get to my destination ! Luckily, Ways came to the rescue on the mobile but that uses a lot of phone power, which I couldn't recharge in the car !

Now back home, I tried it in my BMW and it works as it should and powered up the Tom Tom.

Then back into the Cayman and after a lot of faffing around got the adaptor to illuminate. The adaptor is a VERY tight fit and looks like pressing slightly to one side will power up the TT. However, one slight knock or going over a bump in the road will probably make it lose it's connection again.

What do others recommend if they have had this problem?

I borrowed my next door neighbours USB adaptor, but that one was far too loose and again, would not power anything up.

It would be nice to get something sorted as off to Belgium next Sunday !

  8. I'm insured with Locktons (last four years) BUT........they will only cover you for a trackday if it's a PCGB one.

This may well have changed over the years, but I haven't had any updates from them.

When I went to Spa for the first time, I took out cover from a specialist trackday cover company ( sorry dont remember the name). It was £86 for covering a 986 valued at £5k.

I use OpenTrack for my days and as a comparison, Goodwood full day with them is £275 to £325 depending on time of year. Compare this against the PCGB ones at £495 for the day.

I would have thought that if it was related to the fuel it would be showing codes for both banks.

Another vote for cam solenoid or O2 sensor.

Yes, I was thinking the same re fuel issue should affect both banks.

I had an O2 sensor go on mine a couple of months ago. It struggled to run properly and a really bad misfire. Almost stalling at junctions. Geoff's isnt like that, so perhaps it points to the cam sensor afterall.

As an aside, I went to fill the Cayman up at my local Shell station this afternoon. Their normal unleaded now shows E10 on the pumps, with V Power on E5.

  10. A bit more info on this subject.

Leading up to the CEL on the dash, Geoff filled up with petrol from an ASDA fuel station. It was as he was putting the fuel pipe back, he noticed it was the new E10 fuel. Upon start up, the EML appeared. He called me and I suggested calling in on the way home to a Shell station and top off the tank with V Power.

When he got home, I connected my code reader and it came up with multiple misfires. The codes, as mentioned before were P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303. I cleared the codes but the EML came back on 20 seconds or so after re-starting the engine.

A call to a local indy suggested that the fuel was not the fault as these models should run on them and the Porsche website suggests pre 1996 cars ie 993, 968, and 928 would be more affected.

A call to an OPC was greeted with a possible 24 hours labour charge !!!!!!!!!

Geoff took the car to a local garage with an ex OPC technician yesterday and he read and reset the codes. Again same codes, pointing to one bank miss fire. Possible variocam sensor issue (as Trooper88) said.

    This time EML stayed off.

Geoff drove home and car is still good.

I have suggested doing about 40-50 miles today and refilling with V Power again to dilute whats in the tank.

So, is it a co-incidence that the EML light came on, or as research on Supermarket fuels shows, they have different additives when compared to BP, Shell etc.

    Keep you posted !

PS Geoffs car is a 1999 2.5L model.  Fuel flap, only suggests 98RON be used.

If the CEL is on then the best thing is to get the codes read then cleared.

    Codes P300, P301,  P302, P303.

I'm Geoff's neighbour, I cleared the CEL earlier today and upon restart it was ok...........for 20 seconds, then back on again.

Leaning on the roll hoop and top of windscreen, you can "feel " the missfire.

    ePorsch, I think Geoff.

    Unless @TROOPER88 is available ?

    Cheers,

    Steve.

    That seems logical.

My point is, it could have been anything. Local takeaway menu. As I can't understand Japanese, it did not give a clear indication of any services carried out or mileages to verify.

I was much younger then, and wanted a GT4. I bought it based on condition.

  13. I checked my cars quite some time ago and all ok. Looking at this thread I thought perhaps things have changed. But no, still ULEZ exempt.

    That's on a 986 2.7 2001, Cayman 987 2.7 2007 and a Cayenne 955 2004.

Still have to pay the CC charge though.

  14. Collected the 986 yesterday after a clutch, flywheel and IMS bearing upgrade. Also needed a couple of O2 sensors (pre Cat) to sort a misfire.

    Car is on 94k miles.

Clutch plate down to rivets !

    Flywheel, cream crackered.

IMS bearing was the EPS one.

Beautiful light clutch now and bites where it should, ie not at the top & no judder.

The three pronged plate that holds the IMS bearing in place was smeared with black silicone sealant ! Suspect previous owner had a slight leak from the bearing seal and bodged it with sealant.

    RMS also replaced.

  15. I sold a BMW 330i to WBAC a few years ago. They give you a price (on the net) then at the meeting they walk around the car with a clipboard and "mark down" the car for scratches, kerbed alloys etc. They also measure the paint. Plus I got a black mark for not having the tyre inflating canister in the boot. £50 I think for that mark down.

Back in the office, the offer had gone from £4k down to £3.2k. managed to get them back up to £3.7k and did the deal.

I had already tried a couple of weeks on Autotrader, but no joy.

Plus, they class Full Service History, as a fully stamped up book. Not an inch thick folder full of receipts since the car was new. Luckily I had a stamped up book.

I later found out they were part of BCA (British Car Auctions), so the cars just go on a transporter straight to Blackbushe.
