  1. Swapped the battery out today - the old one has been rather temperamental for a little while;  it pre-dates my ownership of the car3 years ago, though, so not sure now old it even is.  The last straw was last week when I drove 30 mins to work with a supposedly fully-charged battery (thanks to CTEK), only to find it  flat when I came to leave work at the end of the day.  Thankfully I had a jumpstart powerpack with me just in case...

Anyway the Bosch has now made way for a Yuasa HSB110 and all seems to be fine again, no issues with alarm or PSM etc.

While I was at it also removed all the plastic trim bits around in and around the frunk to clean out the gunge around underneath them so looking nicer there now  - only thing is now I need to replace all the little velcro sticky pads which have now all (rather than just a couple previously) come off the long side bits - one job for another day I think!

Left work early and took the long route to walk the dog at the beach since the sun was out.  I’ve only had the car since late August so not had a summer in it yet but I never imagined I’d be driving with the roof down as often as I have done over the winter!

The car is lowered at the front but not the rear and it’s a pain getting in the drive, would there be any benefit for someone to have done this or is it more likely they’ve just used the wrong parts?

Im also looking to get both bumpers painted and the wheels done in a darker colour, would like black but I’ve not convinced myself on that one yet.

Clutch is also heavier than I’d like but my indy says there plenty life in it yet although I still think I’m going to get him to change it sooner than he recommends.

    What a fantastic photo!

  3. So... quick update after some more effort this afternoon, mostly positive news thankfully.

    1. After much effort with spanner and socket lever the bolt on the positive clamp sheared in the middle allowing me to remove it (and the CTEK eyelet connector)
    2. Removed the bolt and nut from the negative clamp and moved it over to the positive clamp which is now nice & snug on the battery terminal
    3. Repositioned the negative clamp on its terminal (without a bolt which should not be a problem while the car is just parked)

Some more research in the meantime has thrown up that other people have had the same experience of negative bolt/nut being much more removable than the positive one, so I'm thinking that worst I should just be able to get one off a new negative cable, if I can't get a bolt on its own, rather than the full power distribution repair kit.

Oh and the CTEK is now connected inside with cable through the door as per your helpful recommendations - thanks for all the advice everyone!

Suppose if someone could transplant the bolt/bolts off it you could buy a Negative battery cable 997 611 090 00 , which is about £19 from an OPC.

Any idea how much a positive battery cable would be if I had to replace the whole thing, or where I could look for the price?  The point is that I think if you take the nut off the bolt you damage them both which is what I've already done on the existing one...

Doesn't look like you can get a cheap replacement bolt option from Porsche.

Would have thought with the right tools it should be possible to get purchase on the bolts to tighten them up.

Yeah I was resigning myself to possibly having to get a whole replacement cable/clamp combo but no idea what that would cost, will have to check with my indy on Monday for a start.

I have tried with a  variety of tools but no joy so far, I think one issue is that the bolt end is slightly flared to stop it from coming off so that end might now be cross-threaded, and I haven't been able to find a way of getting sufficient purchase on the head which is also now slightly rounded to hold it in place so it turns with the rest of the bolt when I try to unscrew the nut.

Hi , sorry to hear re your grief. Appreciate you may not want to hear this right now ,I and others use the Ctek via the ciggy lighter with the door shut with no ill effects to the Ctek cable.

Thanks for the thought - when I last tried that I couldn't find a way of doing it which didn't leave a mark in the cable at least so was trying to find a better alternative, so as & when I get this sorted will try again eventually if you say there is a way of doing it.

In the meantime I just need to remedy the problem I've caused, just one of those things to chalk up to experience I suppose!

  7. Hi all - I have been meaning for quite a while to attach the CTEK eyelet lead to the battery terminals rather than use the cig lighter which would require a door or window left open when charging, and during my last service I was told this would be better connection anyway.

Rather foolishly however I did not do sufficient research on this  and assumed that the battery terminal clamps would be just like every other car I have previously owned and not be single use, so while the negative nut came off and went back on ok (just slightly stiff I thought at the time), the positive one was much harder to do and I presume I have damaged it.  Reading up on this (after the event sadly) I now realise that these bolts are not apparently actually not meant to come off completely, and to connect the eyelets the only thing to do is chop out a bit to make them into a C-connector to slide on rather than a full ring - grr!!

Trying to get the thing back off is now not working either as the square bolt head just spins when I try to undo the nut so I cannot sort it out properly, as there is no space to use a spanner/socket to hold it.  It's just about tight enough to stay on the terminal but I am not 100% comfortable feeling that the clamp is a bit loose and might come off while driving or cause electrical damage.

Any advice other than just try to get to a garage?  Is it possible to get replacement bolts (assuming the current one can be cut through to be removed), or am I looking a replacement terminal cable and a big bill?

  8. Thanks for the input folks.

Car's due to go in for scheduled service anyway in next couple of weeks so will just get them to sort it out then, doesn't seem to be much of an issue in the meantime other than me having to spend a minute or so to refit/adjust it every couple of drives.

  9. Thanks both - will have another look to see what I can remove.  Unfortunately I do not have a garage (or indeed frequent access to a spare pair of hands!) so doing this sort of work is not as easy as it seems.

Good point about cleaning out rads although I did fit some mesh guards a little while back so hopefully debris should be minimal, still worth a check though I expect.

  10. Hi all - apologies if this has been asked before however I am not entirely sure what to call this or what to use as a search term...

On my 987 there is a black plastic cover in the gap at the bottom of the front bumper where a front-engine car would normally have a radiator intake (tried to attach pic), however on mine the cover has come away from the little metal clips around the the left-hand inside edge of the hole, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to push it back into place as I cannot get to the back of it that I can see.  I thought it would be just a matter of reaching from underneath the bottom of the nose however the bodywork extends under the car so no access that way.

Has anyone had this happen to them and is there a way of getting it pushed back into place that does not involve something more involved such as removing the bumper😨?

Careful with the mounting “nuts”  They are nuts held into the chassis with captive nuts in rubber grommets and when you put the screws back in don’t push down too hard when you are lining them up.

Otherwise they will disappear into the bodywork.

They don’t cost much and OPC have a ready supply of them since it appears to happen often.

Thanks for the heads-up although given that it's apparently only a 10min job I decided to just get the guys at 9Excellence who normally look after me and know what they're doing actually do the fitting for what is basically the price of a couple of pints these  days - in London anyway!  I'd have to go there anyway to pick up the part so not a great hardship.

  12. Ordered replacement high-level brake light which seems to suddenly have decided to only light up half of the display ... should be a fairly quick job to replace and not too expensive at least it seems (although considerably more than the old/traditional just swapping a bulb!)

    Prepped for sale :(

Sewn new elastic into the roof guides, so that all works perfectly again now.

Gave the hood a thorough clean today with Renovo cleaner, and gave it a wash and spruce up for its sale pictures.

    Gonna miss this car 😔

Very smart! GLWTS - what are you getting instead?
