Loving the look of that Continental, it looks like a period match. What model is it and as it still available to buy? Did you need an additional wiring kit? Any issues with the anti-theft wiring when you took out the original?

I got mine second hand, but these guys seem to be well respected, they will also help with the connections, the HU has no line out so Cannot be connected straight to an amp. https://www.bergvillfx.com/products/continental-cd7416ub-or I have a model with cd, usb, dab and FM also connects to my phone for phone calls and music

  2. One thing i forgot is make sure you clean out the drains, otherwise the water gets into the car and one of the main ECU's sits under the passenger seat. You will get niggles with it but this group has made life much easier and cheaper.

  3. I bought mine last year from a guy who had only had it a month (wife was ill and insurance was massive) and mine has turned out ok after 15 months. Best thing you can do is drive it, you then end up with a silly grin on your face !

As regards stereo I fitted a continental so it fits in period wise but gives bluetooth, phone USB etc.

Mine had a lack of service history, so I put it in for a full service with an indie and asked them to check it over. The general rule seems to be a full set of stamps showing a service every 2 years since the year dot is not as good as a load of receipts for work carried out over the last 5 years.

I had some receipts for garages that had carried out MOT etc, and i rang them up to see if they had carried out any work in the last couple of years.

All the best and just enjoy it

I plan to get a Continental head unit. Not expecting fantastic sound out of the car, but I would like the radio to be functional. I generally listen to Classic FM when I'm driving (unless I feel like a bit more spirited driving in which case I prefer AC/DC).

I'll get an audio expert to look at the setup and test all the wiring to make sure it's sound. I also want to find out if the amplifier is working and connected. Once all the wiring is sorted I can connect the head unit myself (it's just plug and play with the right harness). I have a stick-on DAB antenna which I'll use. I have the same antenna in my 147 and it works great.

The continental that I have does not include line out for an amplifier, whilst you can add adapters to make it compatible, if your amplifier is not working it my not be worth the hassle factor.

  5. I fitted this, or a very similar continental about 12 months back. I did a DIY job on the connectors. The thing to remember is that the output from the HU is at speaker level rather than line out. What that means is you can not take the output from this unit and connect to an amplifier without first of all having a box of electrics that will take the level down so it can be fed into an amplifier. Unless you are into making this work yourself I would suggest speaking to somebody like BERGVILL F/X (bergvillfx.com) as they will have a plug and play connector for you. You will also probably need a DAB aerial. The only real place on the Boxster is the passenger side of the windscreen.

  6. Went to the supermarket to pick up the shopping, as I drove out the carpark l overheard a bloke in his 60's say to his wife "When I win the lottery I am going to buy a car like that". Didn't like to point out his car was probably worth at least twice what mine cost !! Amazing that you can still get that response on a 23 year old vehicle.

Thanks so much - can I ask which lighter adaptor you bought?

Mine was left over from a project on my boat (now sadly sold), but i happened to be in Halfords a couple of weeks back and spotted the very same. Halfords USB Port HEF623 | Halfords UK. i think i had to make the hole a tiny bit bigger for it to fit, but i used a stanley knife so it really was a tiny bit bigger. Being honest you will probably find cheaper on amazon or ebay.

does the cigarette lighter power down when the ignition is switched off, I’d hate to come back to. A flat battery

I believe so, my USB has a blue light when it is live (and a cover !) and i have never had a dead battery. Just been to check and the USB comes on with the stereo (key position 2?) and then off when back to position 0.

Are you able to discretely wire in an iPhone charging cable to the headunit?

I have the CDD7418UB-OR and it does not have the ability to plug in a USB for charging. It will accept a USB to play music. In the picture to the left of the HU you can see the cigarette socket which i have replaced with a double USB socket.

  10. We used to have a mirror dinghy in the garage. Basically it was kept up above the car by two ropes (one either side) which went front to back in the garage with metal eyes (wrong name) attached to a cradle made of two pieces of wood (and a support to keep them apart) and then the boat was put on top and pulled up into the roof, then was just tied off on a cleat screwed to the garage wall. If I was to do it again i would have pulleys rather than the metal eyes, as it would move more smoothly. Cheap and cheerful but did the job for about 10 years. If you could get hold of a pallet, that would probably make it even easier.

  11. Just redone my car insurance with Churchill. Got a price via a comparison site and as needed to add in some NCB from a car we now sold it didn't match the renewal quote. As I already had a policy with Churchill the computer got a bit confused, so i rang them up and wit the NCB the price was the same as the compuer. Then said that it was a shame I wouldn't get £20 of halfords vouchers through the comparison website, he asked if it would be ok if he reduced my insurance by £20 instead ! can't complain at that. £158 fully comp

  12. If you need a new battery Tayna batteries on line have always given me good service and is delivered to your door. No recommendations on battery from me as the last battery I bought was for a 2.5 td5 diesel Land Rover . Now that needed some cranking power !

    This is a great mod

I think it is only for 2.5/2.7 that don’t have the variable speed knob on the dash, opposite the power outlet.

Totally agree, although some people have done it even with the variable speed knob, but not sure why you would !
