Apologies if this is the wrong section or has been covered in previous posts but a search returns hundred of pages on here that i cant find helps in my circumstances.

Hi I've been a Boxster 2001 3.2 S ( tiptronic) owner for two years and a member on here the day i bought it , having bought a running Boxster with what i thought was the air oil separator gone.

Two years ago I went to replace it ( AOS) after id picked it up and found it had a brand new one fitted, it  then went to a specialist that advised to replace the oil water cooler. this was done and the intermittent clouds of white smoke appeared to stop ( whilst at the work shop) but when delivered home on a trailer it immediately started to smoke again, started with a clutter which cleared and smoked. would then sit and idle for hours with absolutely no smoke and issue.

i was reading all the horror stories of cracked blocks / heads that seem to affect this engine and dreading the worst when it became apparent that my age of car could only have the genuine air oil separator fitted not the aftermarket ones so i removed the previously fitted air oil separator and established it was a euro car parts replacement so, as recommended by the Porsche specialist, acquired a genuine Porsche replacement one and fitted it.  Immediately after washing out all the coolant pipes and refilling with the approved coolant the start up clattering stopped and all the white smoke stopped.  Then, after 6 months of owning the car i got to use the car for the first time without acting as an anti tank smoke screen generator and loved it. The car passed its mot with flying colours and the mot inspector commented that the emissions were very very good for the model and age and mileage ( 104k)...

I then booked it in for a full service and on the way to the service after leaving a roundabout (at speed) onto a dual carriageway and briskly heading up to the speed limit it suddenly coughed and pushed the thickest white cloud out the back you have ever seen, i rolled into a layby 1/4 of a mile later and awaited recovery.

Upon inspection most of the water had gone and when replaced the car runs and idles for hours with no problem again. its been parked up to this date since, whilst i acquired another engine  or decide to scrap it as donor engines were more than id paid for the car and likely to have similar or worse issues.

can anyone help with clarifying whats  likely wrong with the engine or advise someone who may be able to help. car is Alcester Warwickshire but i am based in north wales and can trailer it if needed. its now out of MOT.

Need to know where the water escaped from. Assume you've checked coolant tank and water pump? Could be a sticking thermostat causing the water jacket to boil and push the water out through the weakest point in the cooling system. If it still idles ok it may not be anything major.

Hopefully someone can recommend and Indy nearby.

if the problem was a sticking thermostat  then why would it sit at idle for hours warming up cooling down on the fans...we'd checked that the fans kicked in previously.

Maybe it got stuck that one time and when the engine cooled it freed itself. I think you need to drive it a bit to get a better idea of what's going on. Short runs and gradually putting more heat into the engine and monitor the water temp. Sitting at idle only tells you so much and with so little info to go on, trying to diagnose remotely is next to impossible.

Without wishing to be too pessimistic, have you checked whether there is any intermix with oil, I had a very  similar situation and it turned out to be a cracked head, 2000 Boxster S, really hope not the situation for you.  Before running I would want to check oil as running with water in oil could affect other critical components.

You mentioned cleaning out radiator, coolant system, what prompted this, oil in water?
