Robert Young
Just bought our first Boxster, a 2000 model, not an S, old but very nice in Zenith blue. Simple question - what colour should the front grilles be? These look like they are a sun bleached grey rather than black as I thought that they should be - or should they in fact be grey. Just can't tell by looking at photos.
Eddy555
In all the original press photos that I've seen they appear to be black
Robert Young
Ok, Eddy, thanks. Mine are definitely grey in appearance, so must have aged and been sun bleached. I'll have to see how easy it is the get these out and spay them black again.
Eddy555
They all do that sir. Fairly straightforward job, pop the front bumper off (pretty easy if the bolts undo OK) and they're accessible. Some people add some extra mess behind them to stop leaves getting in and clogging the rads. Also worth checking while you have the bumper off. Robert Young
Great, I'll certainly give that a go. The mesh sound like a good idea too. Thanks
Menoporsche
Do clear out in front of condensers and between them and rads. And find your drain holes and check they are not blocked! crucial for any new 986 owner.
Robert Young
All good advice and makes good sense when the front bumper is off the car. The drain holes are for draining water from where?

Robert Young
Brilliant. That's really most useful. I'm conversant with our 911 but this Boxster is all new to me. I feel that I'm on a steep learning curve, but hopefully a rewarding one. Thanks
Menoporsche
Google for other diagrams, videos etc. It's 600 quid if you get it wrong! (floods the cockpit and alarm control unit)

the baron
Ive done that to mine, bought some black metal mesh from Halfords and cut to shape and screwed behind the original grills, I also respirated the original grills back to black. If you put the mesh behind it will save your radiators as they seem to suck in all kinds of cr*p over the years. They also look pretty good to, still stock as its behind the main grill but on closer inspection you can see the mesh.
Robert Young
Thanks for that. I'll certainly be doing that. Just hope the bumper is easy to remove. I see you also have a Mini Cooper S - great cars - do you have a classic Mini Cooper S or a modern MINI Cooper S?

Eddy555
The screws under the bumper can be pretty rusty so worth swapping for new ones from Porsche (they are cheap) I believe it's 99907322709 (Called a fender liner screw)
Robert Young
Thanks Eddy. The Pelicanpart technical article is clear and easy to follow - I know know just what to do - brilliant.

Robert Young
Lucky girl. We have an early R53 Cooper S with the supercharger - it's a real hoot to drive and sounds wonderful when wound up.
