Charging battery from a 12v socket

I've had the car 9 months now and have been plugging my Ctek charger into the 12v socket in the central storage bin. Last Saturday, it stopped doing that. I checked the socket and it is still live so thought there was a fault with the charger itself. Got another charger , and its done the same thing! Anyone else experienced this?

I use the cigarette socket which also stays live for about 30 minutes and as long as I power it up during this time the charger seems to hold it powered.  Are you plugging in the charger while the socket is still live? As soon as you unlock the doors it's powered up. Or is the charger not indicating that its seeing a load?

I don't understand why it should change what it's doing if none of the software has been updated. But might be worth having a look at these two threads on other forums in case there's anything relevant there - in particular, is your car a 2016 John? That gets a specific mention in this context in the second thread link:

Thanks for this . As I said I didn't have the problem until last weekend, but haven't had any updates etc. I've just tried as you suggest, power up whilst the charger is connected. its come on! I'll see if it stays on for more than 30 minutes although off out shortly so may have to wait until the morning. Probably the wrong time to start messing with the car! SWMBO  isn't very pleased!!

Thanks Jon, this is really helpful too. It is odd that it's just started to do this after 9 months. No reason as I can see. Mine is a 2015 car but of course may be MY2016. looks like this will be my job for tomorrow!

The VIN contains a code for the year, which I assume corresponds to the model year. If the 10th digit of the VIN is G then it is 2016 (F=2015). See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_VIN_numbers

Mine is also G (bought new Oct 2015) but I don't use the cigarette lighter to connect my CTEK and haven't had any problems.

Thanks Jon, didn't know that! Mines a F so it is a 2015 car then. just checked again, its still on!!

I did have mine disconnect a couple of times recently but I couldn't explain why and did wonder if I'd done something different like forget to lock the car (although that shouldn't cause a problem)

Your advice appears to have worked, thanks!

its still charging. Off out now but I’ll check in the morning. Perhaps I connected the charger shortly after I had turned the car off, not sure now!

Caused me some grief in the past! 🙄

I get thrown when things just stop working!

Happily, as is often the case with our cars and the people on this forum, someone had the answer!
And I have looked in the garage this morning and it is still working!

So what was the issue in the end John? Was it that you were letting the car sit and then connecting it to the charger at a later time, when the socket had already switched off?

No Jon, when I first connected the charger it was ok, it switched off subsequently. What now seems to work is to turn the ignition on, and off, once the charger is connected to the 12v socket. It’s still charging now!
