joeluth
Hi guys, So last night I pulled into the driveway and heard a creaking coming from the drivers side front, went out again and found it happened anytime I did a fairly tight right turn. I've been a bit suspicious that one of my pumps was on the way out because I've been hearing a sort of superchargey whine from the engine, it looks like it's my power steering pump as it's pretty rattely when I spin it by hand. The power steering fluid seems to be at the correct levels, it's just above the cold marker when the engine is cold and right on the hot marker when the engine is warmed up. Check this out, it's gotta be done for right!? what a pain, I've got a road trip booked in a week.
joeluth
just replying to myself here after doing some research, seems some people are describing this rattle sound as "normal", it's certainly common. Maybe it's not such an emergency after all, I'm going to get some power steering fluid and top it up, see if that solved it. Last night was the coldest it's been since I got the car, since the fluid contracts and expands maybe it just needs a little top up for the coming winter. I hope so! Its not the best making an Internet diagnosis but think it's probably perfectly normal.
Boxob
Could this be the Ackermann effect? Wheel hop (and extra strain on the steering mechanism) when doing slow speed tight turns.

Cool, thanks for letting me know! yes I think I may be over worrying about that pulley noise. it's not great, but maybe it's how they are, sounds exactly the same in this guys 996, allthough it's probably also 20 years old! I just took the car out again, it's pretty warm today and no weird steering noises at all. I did have a power steering pipe repaired at a specialist in the middle of summer, thinking maybe they didn't fill up the fluid quite enough.
