Dpg123, if you look @ my earlier post on this thread you will see that is now sorted by 5bevOPC without them taking the engines out. Good luck.

Update: So the car went in to Brooklands Porsche last Tuesday for the engine repairs as well as brakes and a couple of other minor items. I was loaned a VW ID4 (electric and actually very relaxing) and collected my car again on Thursday after work. Apart from the car not being washed (they'd "just finished" working on it) and having to ask for the front bumper to be realigned correctly (assume it had been removed for the timing chain cover work), everything seems fine. Car doesn't sound or seem any different to before.

I assume that, having had this expensive and worrisome issue permanently sorted, the value of my car has now skyrocketed, like having a new IMS on a Boxster -vs- one that hasn't?! 😁

@dpg123if you Google “ timing chain oil leak on Porsche Macan Turbo” afraid to say that comes up with videos on You Tube, so yes I guess it could occur on your engine. As you say thankfully with warranty!

So, the car was in for a major service today. 2 major issues identified.

    Qte

    1) aux belt has leaked damping fluid and the tensioner needs replaced 2) oil leak down front of engine, believe this is to be due to front casing leaking from failed front cover bolts

    Unqte

So it seems my car has this common, but hugely expensive fault. Thank god for the warranty! Need to book it back in to have both of these issues addressed…

The biggest point made here is the interior being special. Obviously as loads of people already have fitting the gts diffuser to a standard 981 is very inexpensive & Porsche offer on their website a price to have the design pack supplied and fitted giving you the GTS front end.

So would you spend £50k + on a GTS with leather interior knowing it's inferior to ones that have the full GTS package therefore always take longer to sell or £30k on a well spec'd S with the same interior & a further £3-4k at Porsche to add the design pack and actually bump up the value of that car to circa £40k (today's market).

@daz05 perfect example of this with also the enjoyment of making his car very special. I'd love to know in comparison what your car owes you.

Out of interest, why is a GTS with leather inferior to one with alcantara, and why would it take longer to sell? Not everyone wants alcantara and if something is taking too long to sell then it's the price that's wrong, not the spec.

I'd also argue that a £30k+ "S" with some after-market pieces added to make it look like a car that it isn't doesn't necessarily add any value, but it does satisfy the current owner's personal tastes. Indeed, the fact it's been modified might put people off because not everyone wants a GTS diffuser / front end / 718 PCM on a 981. It'll never actually be a GTS or a 718, it's a 981 S with a body kit and a different sat nav. And the current owner is very happy with it and has enjoyed the process of modifying it themselves because that's their hobby. If we could take a £30k car, spend £3-4k on modding it and then sell it at "circa £40k" then I'm in the wrong game.

If I stick a crocodile on my M&S jumper it doesn't make it a Lacoste jumper. If I had a silver 986 and put a different exhaust trim on it, it doesn't make it an Anniversary. It's a standard 986 with a different exhaust trim on it.

  4. So we (its actually my 74 year old dad buying it) went to RPM on Saturday. What a place. Had a full tour and the workshops are something else. Saw a 959 engine in rebuild, too many GT2/3’s to count, a 918, tons of exotic and custom or race 911’s. Their stock is ridiculous!

Anyhow, agreed the sale. The GTS is gorgeous. The headers are almost stock until in Sport/Sport plus and then it just sounds wonderful. A perfect combo. Lack of GTS interior is personal taste I guess, but the two tone is stunning, luxurious but sporty. Zunsport grills, spyder brakes and some nice options make it a special car. My dad is going to have some fun in that car. He has an XK at the moment, had a 987S before and wanted back in a Boxster. He couldn’t have found a nicer one for the spec he was after.

Thanks to the current owner (on the forum) for answering his questions and giving him the confidence to pull the trigger. The car will be cherished!

Then this is a forum members car, which is always good.

If you search the for sale section you will see it.

Also a lot of information on this forum about everything he has done to it and you could PM him and chat about it.

    Oh, amazing!! I've PM'd them...thanks!!

    The forum delivers once again!!

If it is the RPM car, it has no climate control, and I'm not sure about the brown leather steering wheel and dash.

I prefer an alcantara interior, it really elevates the GTS interior

But if you like it - then go for it!

It is indeed that car. I like alcantara or leather. I actually really like the interior of that particular car. Wheel wise, I'd probably prefer the GTS wheels but the ones on it are also nice. Perhaps do a swap at a later date.

Is climate control an essential? I can't believe cars at this level are even sold without!

  7. Hi guys,

So, thinking of a 981 and looking at a GTS or an S.

I've seen an amazing GTS on for £52k (2015, 28k miles) which is super spec'd.

    I've also seen a nice S (2015, 44k miles for £38k)

Given the large difference in price, I'm trying to work out what would be the better buy over 4-5 years. Am I likely to lose more on the GTS than the S over that period or would a GTS hold it's value enough to justify the difference?

    Thoughts please!

Unlikely, any dealer would want to sell their own warranty

I suppose another option is to do a consignment sale where the dealer sells on your behalf, takes a cut but they never have title to the car so the warranty stays intact.

Just remember the Porsche extended warranty is only a factor in a private sale, if it goes through a dealer, it becomes null and void so not transferable.

I've always wondered...how do they know?

    Very nice indeed.

The engines are lovely and thoroughly enjoyed mine even with the many warranty repairs 🤣 . The heated seats are great in the winter.

Make sure the Pano roof rails are clean when you next open it. There are many vids on the tube reference the drain holes, some reports of them getting blocked and causing water in the cabin, first signs are damp carpets and if you dont notice that then the interior glass will have condensation once you have parked up and left it. Thats how i realised i had the issue as it was water and had ice on the inside 😂 . My issue was the roof cassette mechanism apparently, it was replaced under warranty.

Do NOT use any strong vehicle shampoo, tar remover, etc on the  headlights, they will haze very badly, like a spiders web.

The macan forum is a great place for all the info and often has various parts for sale on there, wheels, boot liners, mats etc

Thanks for the replies and insights.

Had a few of the niggles that the 987.1 came with, so hopefully the Macan stays free of any previously mentioned ones!

The car is a March 2017, so it just misses the higher tax bracket, so £220 per year. I've been paying big money for road tax for so long now, this will feel like a nice bonus to me.

I got the car from Belfast Porsche, so its got 24 months warranty and breakdown. It was two owner and has 36K on her.

Not the highest spec car, but has what I need: Bi-Xenon PDSL, Pan Roof, heated seats. Didn't initially come with Car Play, but the dealer paid 50% of the retrofit costs for me.

The wheels that were on it, weren't OEM Porsche wheels, so the OPC out brand new tyres on a spare set of 20" that they had in stock. Someone told me they were Turbo or GTS wheels???

Having the 3.0L engine is noticeably different to the 2.0L I had in my previous Land Rover Discovery Sport. Its very smooth, quiet and pulls well.

Compared to the Disco Sport, the steering does seem quite heavy at low speed. Someone mentioned some Power Steering Plus retrofit option that would make a difference. Not sure what they were talking about.

    Official OPC pictures attached.

    thanks

    Colin

    Nice car!!

I am a fellow Macan owner (and originally from NI!). Mine's not a diesel, but it does have the Power Steering Plus. I had a 2.0 loaner a few months ago and it didn't have this - I would highly recommend you retrofit this option if you can. It makes a huge difference (not that it was bad before, just that if you have driven both you'll want it).

It's a £293 option on the Tequipment brochure:

    https://content3.eu.porsche.com/prod/pag/tequipment/TeqFinder.nsf/TeqFinder?ReadForm&co=30&sp=1&ma=PCGB (RL)&bt=Macan I&ba=Macan&ac=model&mo=Macan S Diesel

My painter guy suggested making that black and tying it in with a black spoiler.  I wasn't sure.

Black with your green spoiler would look better than a black spoiler. It's the only bit of chrome on the car, I just wonder what it would look like blended in red, or black as your painter suggested. I can't recall seeing anyone having de-chromed theirs...

Looks so good in that colour!

Has anyone ever tried colouring the chrome in the tail lights red, so it blends in with the lenses? If so, any pics? I'd be interested to see how that looks...

That's a fairly long long list of potential MOT failure stuff though, and if you've got a garage a decent tools it is doable, but if you're paying for labour too...  The shell and interior has to be good above the floor pan to make it worthwhile investing in what's bolted to it.

Most of these (oil leak excluded) sound like the usual list of issues that we always say to budget £2k in the first year to fix...

    Hi All

Thanks again for the interest. I'm not feeling too disheartened today, after all I do have a Porsche that starts, stops and drives and to all intents and purposes still looks pretty special.

As you can imagine, Paul is an expert and had quite a list. In particular he highlighted that the suspension really needed some attention. I knew about a "cam cover leak" but the engine needs a good clean to identify the source but it looks like the spark plug tubes are leaking and will need attention. The exhaust is pretty crusty (although not blowing as far as I can tell) and the brakes are evidencing a lack of use in recent years. Beyond that there are also the ac condensers, the need for a radio and I've probably forgotten some bits. But that's a long enough list for now!

I have to say I did an MOT history check and whilst patchy there were clean passes for MOTs in 2021 (DT Sanderson, Spalding) and April of this year. I took that as evidence that the car couldn't be hiding anything too horrendous pre-purchase. Tellingly the April MOT is missing from the small file of papers I have. I did see from a pre-purchase check that immediately after this MOT the car was up for sale for more than I paid immediately after and then subsequently reduced over several months.

I bought the car as a bit of a running project, however my driveway skills are limited and Paul pointed out the need for special tools and knowledge for some the bigger jobs. I'm still in two minds over how to proceed to be honest. The losses shouldn't be too heavy given the car still has a value should I decide to sell, but alternatively maybe there is still some fun to be had should I take it on as a project.

Questions, questions... On a positive note Paul did offer to take another look if I can get down to Surrey from where I am based in Cambridge and talk me through some of these challenges. As I said before, a very helpful and friendly forum here.

To be fair, most of these issues sound like all the common issues these cars encounter when they reach a certain age. Mine's been through most of the above. Just make a list of priorities and slowly work through them until you're back to the start...try to enjoy the process!

  15. I'd recommend Paul from www.torqueboxsters.co.uk. He's done a few bits on my car (roof mechanism, brakes, door membrane etc). Super value, super nice and it's a nice area for a walk / coffee while you wait.

    correct! F*

By way of update, I went through all the comparison sites and the cheapest I could find for the Macan was around £700 for fairly basic cover. My renewal from Ford Insure (not sure how I ended up with Ford Insurance on a Porsche) was nearly £900. Last years premium was around £600 but was very comprehensive. I decided to call Ford Insure and do some haggling. I have never succeeded at this with an insurance company, but lo and behold, they immediately dropped the price to £550! Result - happy with that.

Living in south London, I have given up with the classic car type policies. They don't like business use or allow me to park on road or on the driveway. The Boxster and 996 have been with Churchill for 4 or 5 years and it is very competitive, use the car how I want and park where I want and the only thing they don't include is European Breakdown cover but you can buy that if you need or want it.

I called A Plan for my Macan Turbo (SW London) and they couldn't even quote me on it - not a single one of their underwriters was willing to give it cover.

Thanks, there we go then, parking sensors re the diffuser.

Yep, I was looking for them on the bumper, not the diffuser...though it had been a bodged repair with a second hand part without sensors...
