I’ll update. I hate being screwed over. I’m honestly a very reasonable person but this got my goat. What if this happened to an old lady or someone was hurt? Really annoyed me. I’ll get the car fixed (it’s only damage, not flesh). I have 2 young kids and they could easily have knocked it over the way it was left. LIME are an appalling organisation in my experience so far. Don’t use them!

  2. I have thought about this a lot and I decided a) I wouldn't pursue the 16yo. We've all made mistakes when we're young and I'd be mortified if I got hit with a £750 bill...times are hard enough (although I do still think he needs to learn a lesson) and b) I'd pursue LIME.

So I did some research and sent them this:

    Good day,

Further to the below, I wish to inform you that today I contacted my local Councillor for my area (Ward) in London, which is Wandsworth. My local Councillor happens to be the current Mayor for Wandsworth, Mayor Field (https://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/the-council/councillors/the-mayor-of-wandworth/the-current-mayor-of-wandsworth/). I am aware that your General Counsel for the UK, Sarah Binder, recently served as a Councillor on Wandsworth Council (https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarah-binder-a3210811/), recently resigning . Mayor Field happens to live on the street adjacent to mine so I intend to meet personally this/next week to discuss the matter at his home or mine.

Wandsworth work in conjunction with our neighbouring Councils to manage the roads and pavements in a very large area of South London, along with Transport For London (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transport_for_London).

Your unacceptable response to my complaint prompted me to research the wider issue of abandoned LIME bikes and damage to property caused by negligent damage caused, and I am not surprised by what I found. This issue goes back several years (https://www.theguardian.com/money/2019/jun/03/lime-e-bike-company-wont-pay-for-900-damage-to-my-car). There are many other examples available with little research. There is a feeling of frustration and anger as to LIME’s response to complaints which are always negative.

As you operate on the roads and pavements in our Boroughs and Wards, I will be raising not only this issue, but also the issue of your Dock-less Bikes being repeatedly, recklessly and negligently on our streets and pavements.

I look forward to that meeting with Mayor Field to discuss these issues. I am still hoping that LIME can see sense and settle this matter sensibly by covering my direct costs as repeatedly illustrated with footage and quotations for repair.

In preparation, for my discussions with Mayor Filed, I now ask for the following information:

    1)      The main contact in the UK for LIME (name, email and telephone number)

    2)      The address for legal notices to be served in the UK (full UK address and to whom it should be addressed to)

I am extremely disappointed that a company that pledges to “Respect the Ride” and who supposedly promotes “responsible riding habits at every step from putting on a helmet to parking responsibly” and to which “safety and community are paramount” is completely failing to address and resolve issues that are raised by parties who are injured (either physically or through material damage) by the operation of your company.

I assure you that your response to this complaint will be shared with Mayor Filed and I also intend to ask how he, and his fellow Mayors and Councillors intend to ensure that LIME does not continue to leave our community with financial burdens should LIME fail to operate safely.

I look forward to your prompt and satisfactory response to:

    1)      My individual complaint and claim for damage

    2)      The contact details requested above

    Kind regards,

I'll follow this up with contacting my MP should the response be negative.

I'm kind of fired up by this because it's a greater issue. I hate being hard done by by a big corporation and decided I'd rather put my time and effort into exposing the issue (and hopefully make it better) which will hopefully also recover my cost in the meantime, If I don't recover my cost I'll happily continue to turn the screw on an irresponsible Corporation....

Happy to take any advice on moving forward!

This is actually a good point, what if this did occur and the ‘operator/owner’ came after you for damages would this not show they had some ‘control’ over the property whilst not in use, otherwise anyone could just throw these things in the canal with no recourse if they were ‘not on hire’ at the time.

I understand that these bikes have GPS installed and the operator monitors battery and location remotely. They'll then drive around to relocate the bikes as necessary and charge them etc. I also heard they ave sensors indicating when they've fallen over. I'm not sure who else here lives in London, but LIME bikes in particular are just abandoned anywhere. They are almost always lying on their side as well, which shows me they're not stable.

My question is, if one of these bikes fell over and injured a child (or worse as they're very heavy), is LIME simply able to say they've zero liability? It's their bike at the end of the day, and if it falls over then it's nobody else's fault but theirs.

Good idea, I'm waiting for them to call back - in the meantime, I sent LIME this:

    Good day,

This response is absolutely unacceptable. Clearly the bike had been left in a dangerous and negligent position whilst under your ownership and care, which goes against the rules published on your website:

    QTE

Do not park in locations that are not permitted, which include, but are not limited to:

    ·         Wheelchair ramps

    ·         The middle of bike or pedestrian pathways

    ·         Hospital entrances

    ·         Fire stations

    ·         Inside gated communities

    ·         No Parking Zones (may be met with fines)

    UNQTE

The fact that these rules are published on your site demonstrates your knowledge and acceptance that it is illegal to block the walkway with a bike. As such, it is plain that the bike was in an illegal position in your ownership and care. The fact the bike immediately fell over damaging my car demonstrates it was left negligent and/or dangerous condition and/or the vehicle is damaged/faulty. It is only luck that the bike did not fall onto a child causing injury or worse.

As the hire had ended, the responsibility immediately reverts from the hire customer to the owner of the vehicle (LIME/Impressum (Neutron Holdings Limited)) who are now laible for the safety and condition of that vehicle.

I hereby give you notice that I intend to commence court action in the UK as follows:

Re: Damage to Vehicle caused by a LIME Bike owned and operated by LIME / Impressum (Nuetron Holdings Limited) being negligently and dangerously abandoned whilst under their care.

    Dear Sir,

I note your message dated 23 February 2022 rejecting my claim for damages against LIME for damage caused to my car as a result of LIME’s bike being negligently abandoned in an unsecure and dangerous position outside my home, whilst under the care and responsibility of LIME / Impressum (Neutron Holdings Limited), which resulted in the bike collapsing into my vehicle causing £750 of damage.

I am once again requesting a full payment of the damages caused (£750) - I again attach the evidence of the incident and the quotation for repair.

I request a reply as soon as possible to confirm you have received this letter.

To avoid taking court action, I am willing to use Alternative Dispute Resolution in the UK as a competent jurisdiction, to resolve this problem (in line with clause 18(h) of your user agreement).

If I do not receive a satisfactory response from you within 14 days of the date of this letter, I intend to issue proceedings against you in the county court without further notice. This may increase your liability for costs.

I refer you to the Practice Direction on pre-action conduct under the Civil Procedure Rules, and in particular to paragraph 13-16 which sets out the sanctions the court may impose if you fail to comply with the Practice Direction. You have a legal obligation to respond to this letter.

    Kind regards,

Problem is the company is based in the USA - I don't think my letter holds any legal weight at all. If they don't pay up, do I pursue the 16yo's dad or is that unfair? Do I swallow this and take satisfaction by spending some spare time on Twitter and Instagram shaming LIME and spreading the word as far and wide as I can that they're an unscrupulous and untrustworthy company with zero morals or integrity? Millennials seem to think these big corporations somehow care about the environment/customer but in reality they're a cash generator for shareholders at all costs, same as any other firm. They're complete scum.

  6. Some advice please!

I live in London and rental electric bikes are a real pain - at the end of a hire, riders literally abandon them anywhere they like with little regard for others. Across pavements, in parking spaces for cars, across driveways etc. It's mainly younger people it seems, who just don't seem capable of thinking.

Anyway, I returned home last Thursday and found one of these heavy electric bikes on the ground and against my Macan. It had fallen down and damaged the bumper and wing - quoted £750 for repair.

I retrieved the footage from the camera outside my house which captured everything and sure enough a teenager left the bike beside my car, literally 90 degrees across the pavement blocking it completely, and walks off. Within 20 seconds the bike falls into my car.

I took photos and moved the bike to a safe place, taking note of the bike reg. I also then saw the teenager who abandoned the bike on the street. I showed him the footage and he admitted it was him and gave me his dads number (he's 16). I called LIME (the bike company) who sent me a claim form. I filled it in, sent in the video, photos and the quote for repair. Their insurer got back to me last night saying they're not liable as the bike "has to be on active hire" to qualify for cover. LIME themselves say it's nothing to do with them (they own the bike) and it was an "act of God".

What am I to do here? I'm pretty p*ssed with the thoughtlessness of the teenager - he would have heard the bike fall. I'm annoyed at insurance as the bike was obviously left in a dangerous and unsecure position but the last user. LIME are simply a joke - it's their bike that damaged my car. It clearly wasn't left secured and was inevitably going to fall.

    Thoughts anyone?

My sisters beagle ran out through a hedge in front of a Fiesta and trashed the grill. They took it to the vet for a few cuts and bruises, but it was fine, still stupid though. Hopefully this dog was just a bit bruised.

I think it should be. It had some cuts but wasn’t limping or struggling at all. Expensive dog though…I’m sure it made it home!

Hitting a dog in a car, even if it runs off, is an accident which legally has to be reported to the police.  Failing to report within 24hours is an offence - potentially a £5,000 fine!

Hopefully noone else reported it nor was it caught on CCTV or dashcam.

If you do report it to the police then it follows you must inform your insurance company.

So, was anyone looking or likely to report it?

I had to look into this a while back when a deer jumped into the side of the car. Hitting a deer is not an accident.

Just to clarify…I’m asking for a friend.

As you’ve discussed a possible claim with your insurer, you wife will now need to declare the incident when applying for insurance for the next five years and anyone putting her as a named driver on their insurance will also need to mention it. Do not be tempted to forget to mention as they will probably have put a note on your file following the call. It gets very expensive very quickly if they think you are lying to them.

If you don’t claim, I doubt your premium would rise much if at all. If you do claim it definitely will as although your NCB is protected, the base premium is likely to go up. You could try some dummy quotes to get an idea of the difference, but use false details as they may otherwise conclude that you are deciding whether or not to declare it.

I reckon if your current insurance is £2-300, then you may as well claim as the extra premiums will probably not exceed the claim value. However if you have a number of vehicles to insure, then the extra on each may make it not worthwhile to claim (if the wife is a named driver on these as well)

Don't worry, I was clever enough to use a phone not linked to my account and didn't give any of my details at all. There's no way they can trace me. I think I'm not going to claim. It's not worth the hassle and the risk of breaking even over time. If it was for £5k or something thats another matter...

Also worth remembering that although you will still have the same amount of NCD next year as its protected, your premium will increase for the next 5 years as there is a claim on the system.

Exactly this - is the claim worth it if they hike my premium up by £100/year for the next 5 yrs? If I could get some sort of clarity on what the impact of a claim actually is on a premium then it would be easy to judge. But the system is so deliberately confusing it's impossible to decide!

  11. Yesterday my wife hit a dog that ran out into the road (at least she told me it was a dog - I'll be watching the news for the next couple of days!). The dog ran off but not before it had smashed the front grille and number plate surround of her Macan. The repair bill is £570 for parts and fitting (the bumper needs removed to replace the grille).

I have zero voluntary excess and £350 compulsory. I also have a £250 cover from Go Compare that pays off the first £250 of my £350 excess, leaving me with just £100 to pay in the event of a claim. I have 13 years No Claims Bonus which is protected.

My question is, is it worth claiming for this? Will the insurance company just hike up my premium and recoup the money over time? Will  need to declare this claim to a new insurer if I later switch, in which case that premium quote goes up?

It's so confusing, almost deliberately so, knowing what to do.

I rang my insurer on my work phone and didn't give any details, ut I was asking their advice. They said they cannot divulge how my premium would be affected. They also said I had to inform them of the damage even if I didn't make a claim (as if!!!).

    Any advice or insight please??

As mentioned has to be coded to the car using PIWIS (Porsche diagnostic/coding tool)

Does your car also have BOSE ? There are different CDR23 variants depending on the answer to that.

    BE6611 is the CDR23 variant for non-BOSE

BE6612 is the CDR23 variant for BOSE.

As you maybe aware these are rebranded Becker units.

Contact details for Becker if you needed to sound (ahem) them out for anything.

There is one seller on Ebay who claims to be selling units which have been reset so they don't need PIWIS coding, no idea re that service, just pointing out there maybe another way of dealing with the coding issue, not cheap mind (£350/£400)

I'll jump in, the gear change gets a bit off and you can feel the mass of the engine rocking back/forward more under power and lift off.  You could think it was clutch related.  It is a fairly easy replacement and make the drive much more refined. If it hasn't been done on your car, at 17/18 years old it probably needs doing as the rubber in the bush will have deteriorated if not started to split and tear.  From the reports I've read here and elsewhere, the need to change seem to be around 80k miles or 15 years if not sooner.

Thanks! I'll have it checked/replaced at the next service. Think my rear shocks need replaced too as the drivers rear wheel tramps if I pull away to "enthusiastically". All other suspension components were replaced a year ago.

Sorry to hijack this thread btw!

    Hey Baron,

What's the symptoms of a worn failed front engine mount?
