Had a Chipex set delivered today. There are a few stone chips on the bonnet so will give them a go this weekend and see how it is !

I found using this type of thing gave a really good result, otherwise the paint can be a bit blobby when applied with a Touchup. You need to thin the paint a bit and then it’s like drawing rather than painting. Vertical surfaces can be challenging, but just don’t put too much in the reservoir and surface tension is your friend.

    That’s amazing

    Regular oil changes?

Reasonably regular, mostly yearly, but did have a 16k, 27 month gap at 21k. Lots of steady miles commuting up and down the M4 for 20 miles each way by the last owner which racked up the miles, but was probably pretty kind on the engine, if not the chassis🙁

Yes, a manual S in aqua blue. I’ve linked to the ad from Pembury Cars who sold it to the guy I bought it from. He did 4000 miles in it in the two years he had it and it still looks as good as it does in those pictures.

I’ve bought cruise control stalks on eBay and I’m looking to have that fitted and coded. Next job I think will be getting CarPlay fitted, probably to the existing screen.

I’m loving it so far. It feels and looks really special.

Very nice, not usually a fan of light interiors, but it works well with the blue. Perfect for all year roof down motoring with the PSE and heated seats/steering wheel. One thing to note on the CarPlay thing, see if the GPS display remains in the instrument binnacle as it can be tricky to see with the roof down on the main screen.

I’ve just picked up my new 981S, so know the feeling of excitement.

I bought a car, collected it on Saturday and love it so far!

I've tried adding some photos but have not been able to.

You need to host them somewhere like Imgur and then link to them. Storage is very limited on here.

Tell us more about your new car, manual?

I had a 2.5 with 103k about 12 years ago and it never did it.  Had the starter motor squeal though!

The 2.5 5 chain I’ve just scrapped had 165k on it, used 5W 40 Titan Supersyn and never rattled on startup. I did measure the cam deviation which was well within limits at 3 degrees.

The disabling the fuel pump trick sounds like a good cheap solution👍

So was mine. Once you have bonded with it you are lost :)

So far I have done, and not in any particular order: complete suspension refresh, heater display, steering wheel and horn, new tyres, bits on the roof, brake booster, brake master cylinder, exhaust (twice), new condensers for the aircon, various little bits for the interior etc etc.

I also bought a hardtop for it (great upgrade) and have now started changing the interior to black. The seats started that process. I didn't enjoy the 986 seats and got hold of a nice set of black 987 seats. Liked the look of it in the car and started changing the interior little by little. Dashboard is done and I am now just waiting for the arrival of the main carpet so I can take out the graphite grey carpet that is still in there. Clutch is going to be changed end of the month thanks to @TROOPER88 who kindly offered his help with that project. I don't think I would have had the cojones to try doing that on my own..

Eventually I will run out of things to fix on this car but probably not anytime soon.

Having just dropped the engine and gearbox and removed the dash, I would say you’d have no problem doing the clutch if you can reinstall that dash. I was relieved it was a one way project for me.

  7. Before starting the job, check all the nipples, particularly the inside ones to make sure they’re not siezed. Maybe spray a bit of dismantling fluid around the thread first. A lot of garages only touch the front ones when bleeding. I think I’d do inners first as the outers don’t seem to bleed this area.

  8. No need in my opinion and experience, the connection to the manifold is pretty solid and you’d be putting the cat under stress if you tried to secure it elsewhere. Mine has been quite happy only supported at that end after the connection to the U bend rusted away😬

  9. Take the bulkhead panel off from behind the seats to gain access to where the water pump sits. You can then remove the serpentine belt and check the water pump pulley for play. If there is play then it’s likely this is the cause of the leak. Plenty of YouTube videos on how to do this stuff. If this is a bit technical for you and you don’t want to start it then your only option is to get it recovered to a garage to investigate. It does sound like a water pump failure.

Have you checked under the car for water escaping?

I can find the size out for you, I bought it off Amazon. Some of the mesh has very small holes so not suitable and yes there are some decent YouTube videos. The one I watched was an American guy with a white 981, I know that narrows it down for you 😂 but he shows you how to make the template etc. He did it with the bumper in place and I started off like that but when the air con guy took the bumper off it was a lot easier 👍

Great, I did wonder about the smaller 3*6mm mesh being a bit restrictive. I watched his video last night, quite entertaining. Did you do them from the front as well? Wondering if it’s easier with the bumper off when I hoover out all the gubbins and check the condenser condition.

    😂😂

I do prefer the clean factory but having replaced two sets of condensors I decided I needed to use some sort of grill and the diy version is a lot more subtle.

As for the sides on the 981 you would be surprised how many leaves get hoovered up and stuck in there.

Where did you get the mesh from? Seeing a lot of variation in mesh size. Any good YouTube guides?

  12. Not a fan of the side ones, look a bit ‘Halfords’ and not sure they’re protecting anything apart from Zunsports profits. Mind you, that’s a Cayman so the owner’s taste is already suspect.

I’m no expert either but I think main/big end bearings won’t be magnetic whereas IMS will be.

The bearing shells are usually an aluminium alloy with things like copper and bronze in so the oil analysis can pinpoint where the issue is coming from. I think Miller gives a fault finding guide.

  14. I’ve done without heated seats for 8 years in the 986, but I do have to dress up like the Michelin man to keep warm on the colder days with the roof down and heaters on full. As long as you’re pressing on, the engine get nice and hot so the heating is quite effective, however if you have to take it easy for traffic or because of ice then it becomes quite uncomfortable as the blowers aren’t pumping out as much heat.

Most owners would just put the roof up, but it always seems a shame to do that on lovely crisp winter mornings, so heated seats will be a bonus for me👍

  15. Reader, I bought it😀

Many thanks to @Madlil who was a pleasure to deal with. Hope you’re enjoying the F type.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread as it was an exceptionally useful source of opinions and made the decision to go for this car very easy. First proper drive today and it feels like a great place to be. No idea how all the toys and buttons work yet, but I’ll get the hang of it eventually.

The only real departure from the general consensus here was that this did not have PSE, but given what it does have I wasn’t going to let that get in the way, particularly as it has the Carnwal GT exhaust which on first impressions I think I’m going to like. It probably helps that I’ve come from a 986 with a ToyoSport exhaust and manifolds, so I’ve done the noise thing. I can always retrofit if I change my mind.

The auction car has now come up on Auto Trader. I’ve called with a view to viewing this weekend, as it’s only 9 miles away. Do you reckon I left a message with (a) the actual seller or (b) Collecting Car’s’ agent keen to Collect his Commission?

Any recommendations for PPI in West London?

Thanks and Happy Easter to you!

I wonder whether Collecting Cars has a condition in it’s T&Cs similar to estate agents which means commission is due if the eventual buyer was introduced by them?

Not really your problem, as they will chase the seller for their commission, but worth bearing in mind. Makes sense to go straight to the seller as without commission to pay they can afford to go lower on price.
