  1. I’ve done without heated seats for 8 years in the 986, but I do have to dress up like the Michelin man to keep warm on the colder days with the roof down and heaters on full. As long as you’re pressing on, the engine get nice and hot so the heating is quite effective, however if you have to take it easy for traffic or because of ice then it becomes quite uncomfortable as the blowers aren’t pumping out as much heat.

Most owners would just put the roof up, but it always seems a shame to do that on lovely crisp winter mornings, so heated seats will be a bonus for me👍

  2. Reader, I bought it😀

Many thanks to @Madlil who was a pleasure to deal with. Hope you’re enjoying the F type.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread as it was an exceptionally useful source of opinions and made the decision to go for this car very easy. First proper drive today and it feels like a great place to be. No idea how all the toys and buttons work yet, but I’ll get the hang of it eventually.

The only real departure from the general consensus here was that this did not have PSE, but given what it does have I wasn’t going to let that get in the way, particularly as it has the Carnwal GT exhaust which on first impressions I think I’m going to like. It probably helps that I’ve come from a 986 with a ToyoSport exhaust and manifolds, so I’ve done the noise thing. I can always retrofit if I change my mind.

The auction car has now come up on Auto Trader. I’ve called with a view to viewing this weekend, as it’s only 9 miles away. Do you reckon I left a message with (a) the actual seller or (b) Collecting Car’s’ agent keen to Collect his Commission?

Any recommendations for PPI in West London?

Thanks and Happy Easter to you!

I wonder whether Collecting Cars has a condition in it’s T&Cs similar to estate agents which means commission is due if the eventual buyer was introduced by them?

Not really your problem, as they will chase the seller for their commission, but worth bearing in mind. Makes sense to go straight to the seller as without commission to pay they can afford to go lower on price.

Thanks Nobbie, yes have done that - will report back as and when I get a response.

Good luck, hope it’s a good un and you can make a deal.

  5. That looks pretty serious to me, someone has clearly slapped some black gunk over it in the past. My 1999 car has some rust issues, but the jacking points are fine. Have you taken the covers off and checked the main structural members? When was the last MOT done? Did it mention rust? If it was within a month then I’d be looking to complain to VOSA about a fraudulent MOT or use that threat to get a refund from the dealer.

  6. As you say, it’s clearly not been cherished, but equally it seems in decent shape with no major faults. These cars are 20 years old now, so you should expect to do a bit of work on them when buying. You may have an advantage buying at auction for a tip as there is generally less demand for them so you might get lucky and secure for a decent price.

Prices are only going to creep up from here as spring approaches and sellers are less likely to accept offers, so in your shoes I’d be minded to go for this one. You’re not buying a collectors item, it’s a car to drive, so there’s little point getting too precious about it or worrying about resale value. If you want to be driving one soon, this seems like a good option.

I doubt many Tips have had the IMS changed as this is generally done ‘while you’re in there’ changing a clutch and dropping the tip box off is about a 10 hour job from memory £££. Anecdotally, tips are less prone to IMS.

How far away is it located? Probably best to factor in getting it delivered into the price.

    Happy bidding👍

Thanks to everyone, great advice and much appreciated. Only been looking since September so inevitably not much around over winter. Hopefully a bit more stock will materialise when clocks go forward.

As for that link, many thanks yes seen that one - car looks just right, as far as I can see,  although not many pics to go on. Only reason I didn’t pursue it is it’s some distance away from me. For various reasons that would be a bit of a struggle. I’ve done Ireland to view a car before, but sadly those days are behind me now.

Whereabouts are you based? How far would you travel?

  8. How long have you been looking? Would have thought they’d be a few around. Personally, I’d probably stick with the Tip as you’ve got used to it and you might find the manual a bit tiresome. I bought a tip as the rest of the car was great, but I’ve really got to love the way it works and don’t miss stirring a manual box.

Then the purchase price needs to be no more than £5k then, the rest will be spent making it drive like it should.😉

Strong disagree on that approach. A £5k car will be in obvious need of lots of expensive work, you can’t polish a turd. Much better to hunt out the cars that have been well maintained by enthusiasts such as those found advertised on here. They’re usually not that much more expensive than badly maintained cars. Given the cost of labour and parts on these cars, buying cheap is a false economy unless you like sourcing parts off eBay and rolling around under your car at weekends.

Certainly agree on making it drive like it should and hopefully a previous owner has already started replacing the suspension. My 986 was bought at 140k off here and had been well maintained, but it did need the suspension replacing. Luckily I don’t mind ebay and rolling around under cars. Transformed the car👍

  10. Not allowing a drive or driving you in it is a massive red flag. Could be an issue with going into 2nd as these can get difficult from cold. Not letting it idle could be because it has an irratic idle due to faulty MAF, air leaks or something more serious. I’ve always jet washed my car and never had a wet boot due to this. You did well to walk away from that one. They were definitely hiding a few faults. I’d be more than happy to take someone out in mine and red line it, emergency brake etc and then leave them to look over the car on their own because I know it’s mechanically sound. Most genuine sellers want to show you what it can do.

  11. As you’ve found, you need to be careful on comparison sites when running multiple scenarios as obviously all the data is sent to all the insurers to get quotes. They are on the lookout for testing how much declaring a claim would cost and will bump your quotes if they suspect you’re hiding it by requoting without the claim. I’ve read of cases where people couldn’t get quotes from comparison site due to it being apparent they were just seeing what would give the lowest quote irrespective of the truth.

How are you getting on with the Toyosports item?
Only done a couple of test drives with mine but will be doing a 40 mile round-trip on Tuesday, hopefully with the roof down, weather permitting and will know more on my return!

I’ve loved it on a weekend car, particularly after it calmed down a bit after the first 1000 miles. Came back from Scotland on the motorway with th roof down and the drone wasn’t intrusive. Worst is around town if you need to put your foot down to make a gap, but I don’t generally drive in town much.

If I hadnt bought the one from the US I'd have bought yours from you.

Ordinarily I wouldn't be excited about a standard oem backbox but this will sound like it's just come out the factory as the condition is mint.

Who knows, if I put it on and it's too quite and yours is still available I might buy it still.

Not sure how much of the nice loud exhaust is down to all the leaks in the backbox. 🤣

When I got my 986 someone asked if it had been modified as it sounded quite meaty, but I thought nothing of it until I replaced it with a Toyo sport item. When I removed the old back box it rattled as some major part inside had broken off, probably part of the muffling. I was going to sell it, but when I looked the other day one of the seams had split underneath, so I left it out for the scrap man.

OK. decided against the Dremel in favour of the Flat Bladed Multitool cutter.  My rational being this will achieve an even depth cut, the Dremel being a round cutter after all.  Also I haven't got the In-line adaptor for the Dremel - so coup de grace on that one !

Also gonna leave till the afternoon as I shall soak the area with Releasing fluid each hour in the vane hope it will penetrate the threads...

Then take my courage-in-my-hands and plunge in....Fingers Crossed

And all before I cook Mother's Day Lunch.  Who said Men can't Multi Task.  And I'm looking after the Grandson too.  🤣

Good luck, if you’re doing a pie, making the pastry does a great job of getting the dirt from under your nails😉

Hi Nobbie, I’m a long retired tax inspector who cut his teeth investigating lowly subbies trying to tell me they never did cash jobs progressing onto high net worth individuals and company bosses trying to defend their tax avoidance schemes. So, although not infallible, I think I am well placed to spot a dodgy geezer trying to sell me a car. The seller was a genuine guy who was trying to hide from his wife how much he was losing on his short term car ownership policy. Anyway, let’s all enjoy our cars and chatting about them. Sun is shining here and the roof will be down very shortly😀.

Would you also like a short course on how to suck eggs🤣

Have a good drive out, I would, but nursing a hangover🙁

  16. It sounds similar to an overpayment scam, but in reverse. In your case, it’s the seller’s who’s put themselves at risk by giving you an undocumented £400. In theory, if you found a legitimate reason to return the car for a refund, they would be obliged to give you the full £16k and a court would back you up as that is what the paper trail would say.

Often, people trying to complicate transactions are looking to scam you.

    Overpayment scam

A customer attempts to overpay for an item or an order and asks you to wire them the difference. They may be using a stolen credit card or account to pay you, and if the legitimate account holder reports unauthorized activity, that money can be withdrawn from your account. Learn more and beware of overpayment scams.

  17. I had this when I tried to jump my dad’s Fabia. In the end I just left my car running connected to his car via the jump leads for 20 mins to give his battery a bit of juice so it wasn’t draining the current during the jump start. It started fine after this.
