Strictly speaking this wasn't today but my genius strawberry milkshake bottle holder needs to be shared! (haven't tested it on other flavours, because I only like strawberry)

Another reason why a Boxster is far superior to a 911. Better weight distribution. Can’t stand Stawberry though.

  2. Yep tried mine with the Durametric just out of curiosity when I had an exhaust manifold off. You can’t miss hearing the pump working. (Engine off). It blows really well out of the holes in the cylinder head too.

Soul/Designtek/Top gear etc valved exhaust install link if others need it.

    http://soulpp.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/987.2-Soul-Valved-Exhaust-Install-Guide-Web.pdf

That’s not quite the same system. Almost identical but not. The Soul system has some pressed out parts. Control gear looks the same though. I don’t think the stainless they use for the Top Gear one would press so easily as I’d bet it much thicker.

Installed my DesignTek valved exhaust with the help of a friend who works in a garage, so we could use the lift. It went really smoothly, no hiccups, using a set of instructions for the Soul exhaust, which looks identical.

We only got the pipes on and I’ll do the vacuum lines and wiring on another day. By default the valves are open and it is very LOUD. Quiet(ish) when pootling, but as soon as you accelerate it turns hooligan and crackles on the overrun. I’ll have to get on with the rest of the install asap to have the option to dial down the volume.

The old system had a hole in the upper right corner of the right-hand box, the size of a 50p piece.

Hmmm I thought that they had changed them so they started up quietly. I have one from Cybox which I am pretty sure is the same as yours. It came in a box from Top Gear. I worked out a way to get it to start in quiet mode and how to run the vac pipes fairy neatly so let me know if you need any more info. Although it is all in some of my older posts I guess....

So today got back home from work and my Bilstein B6 PASM rear struts have finally arrived ( ordered in December!!)

Stripped one out, opened the box and they have sent fronts😡😡

On a positive note the Carnewal 200 cell cat manifolds I’ve bought, the one side I’ve done no bolts sheared, 😇using some sound engineering practises, just hope the other side plays ball🤞

Lucky sod ! From memory I just snapped the front two. So look out for the one at the front. I probably spent 20mins on each bolt with various impact guns. But even welding a nut on the snapped stud wouldn’t get them out. I know you can buy/ borrow a jig but just used the original manifold to spot through (drill bit same size as hole) and then fitted  heli-coils. Took one side out a couple of weeks ago and they came out easy. Probably been in there 2-3 years now but stainless bolts now and fake copper grease from halfrauds seems to keep the the two metals from reacting nicely.

    Good luck with the rest.

More importantly what does it sound like?

I fancy doing them but the bolt thing puts me off.

Do you mean the exhaust or the front mud flaps hitting the deck because the bump stops were shagged ?

This should answer your question I hope. 986 is for standard exhaust perspective 😉

  7. There is another post about this somewhere at the moment. In technical I think. Yep the bolts don’t come out easily from the cylinder head and the there in each side of the exhaust will have dissolved. Best left to the professionals unless you are good at putting M8 thread inserts into the cylinder head. I spent 20mins on each bolt at least with both electric and air impact wrenches.

Only snapped the two at the front. Even welding a bit on they wouldn’t budge and had to be drilled out. 3, Maybe 4 years on and some fake Halfords copper grease and the come out easy. 🙂

I think I might have posted ‘Ow my knuckles’ on it previously or it may be something else I tried.

Well I've not cut any telephone poles down today but I have lost my Internet! My neighbours have had theirs 'fixed' though, hmmm!

Continuing the no signal theme, my recently acquired, 987. 1 has no GPS signal.

Today I've updated the DVD from 2007 to 2015, no better. Unplugged the whole unit. Done the 148 reset. Checked the antenna near the pollen filter has two leads connected, still nothing! Says 0 satellites.

    Any ideas?

They made a great camp fire when I was in the scouts. Not sure they would fit in my wood burner. Sorry Buzzby.

Back on topic fitted the last bump stop rubber which wasn’t as bad as the NS one which had almost turned to sand. Also greased the wheel nuts between the washer and the head. None on the threads as per the manual. Sorry if I mentioned that before!

  9. Finally got around to doing some work on the car. New NS exhaust manifold fitted as the cat was knackerd (not the or in the picture). It's a slightly different design but fitted nicely. Helps having had it all apart recently but the lamda sensors were still well rusted in.

Loosely fitted one rear tuning fork and have just got to about page 4600 of the workshop manual for the tightening torques. Tomorrow's job to finish it all off. Didn't seem to be any p!ay in the old one unlike the fronts.

Not all technically today, but a busy week hopefully finishing with 'works' to have next weekend onwards to just enjoy driving more than what the wife would say is 'tinkering'.

    - MOT passed, though advisory for cracking on the ageing tyres

    - 4 new Michelin PilotSport 4S fitted - managed to do about 100 miles for bedding them in a little, so should be all good to properly put through their paces with the next shopping run next weekend

    - Managed to replace the PCM 3 (with Bose) head unit yesterday & finish setting up today. All in all pleased with the update but want more time to be able to go out and enjoy it now.

PS - not needed any local servicing done yet and without travelling to far Northway Porsche looked like my best bet, but have had a local recommendation from my tyre fitter to use Paul Stevens (Purely9), based in Yateley - has anyone on here also used to be able to provide advice?

I live a bit further south but work in Farnham. See you round maybe.

I’m from Bisley and an engineer myself but use Eporshe for all the bits I can’t do. They really know there stuff and are very reasonable and pre Covid dare I say quick.

They also sell the spares via Spyder Performance so I guess have a few on hand.

    Enjoy the drive.

  11. New Frunk and boot struts I ordered on the 22nd of Feb from Autodoc arrived today so fitted them all.

Front were 997.511.551.01 and I went for Lesjofors ones.

The rear one is 987.512.551.01 appears unbranded.

They are much stronger so no more headaches!

Would you kindly be able to share a link for the ones you went for please?

    Spyder website?

Hi Unfortunately I used the Autodoc app that I have on my phone. I’ve used it a couple of times before to order parts and it works very well. The parts come from Germany I think so they are a bit slow to arrive. However there is loads of choice so you can pick what ever brand you like. Until they arrive I can’t actually work out what struts I did order. There are some posts about it further up this thread as well though.

Spyder Performace is part of Eporsch in Bisley and they are sourcing and distributing the parts directly from the manufacturer in Germany. If you look up the various threads about parts Porsche sourced the parts from different manufacturers the likes of Meyle and TRW. The original parts are usually from a mix of suppliers anyway.

Luckily I am from Bisley and although I don’t live there any more they can still deliver to my mum 👍and give my car an occasional once over to check that I have put it back together right!

I found and removed the mushroom covers. The 5mm Allen key fits and I've undone the front one. Do I have to remove the seat to get access to the rear one? How hard is that? What will I disturb by attempting seat removal? I've never tried to be useful in car maintenance but if it's feasible, I'll give it a go.

No just raise the seat a bit and move it forwards. Use the Allen key the wrong way round and hook a ring spanner 10mm ish on the end to turn it.

    It is actually the same part on 987.2 and 997.2  - 997 341 053 03

+1 for Spyder Performance unless you want original Porsche in which case you OPC but a lot more money.

Think that’s the same as the 987.1 as well. But yeah + Spyder as they have the correct parts  nailed down. Wish it was the same 3/4 years ago when I changed mine. If you haven’t t done the ‘tuning forks’ as well might be worth looking into the kits if there is one as at this age probably on there last legs too. Snooker ball knocking sound on the front shows them up but not as easy to hear at the back.

The 987.1 coffin arms are different front and back btw dunno about the 987.2

  16. New Frunk and Trunk buttons arrived this morning. Just fitted. Didn’t disconnect the battery and they work fine.

FYI the panel they are sat in is only secured with 2x 5mm Allen keys which only need to be loosened but it doesn’t matter if they fall out. It does need a good yank to release it though. The module then comes out the top. Slightly difficult to release the cold plastic tabs but they didn’t break.

Thanks so much Buzzit, I've placed my order immediately.

Yep last time I was looking they were about £75 so I took it out and managed to re-solder some of the circuit board. I guess they are in a prime spot for getting coke or something spilt on them. I seam to remember that although all that holds them in are two (5 maybe 4mm) Allen keys from the inside of the sill (under 2 mushroom caps). They were really deep in the plastic so difficult to get the Allen key in with the seat in the way. After that the whole thing just lifts out with a 3 pin plug. Might be worth disconnecting the battery when you do it so you don’t get any errors. I think it may take a few cycles for the cars memory to realise that the buttons work again if you don’t have piwis or Durametric to reset any errors.

    Happy to help.

You have no idea how long it took me to find the correct suspension parts for my car when I did the rest. Parts of the arms (Coffin etc) use the same generic castings as the 996, 911 and 986 but with different bushes. It’s great to have this thread and just narrow things down to 987.1 or .2

Please post a link for those release buttons. If they fit my car, I'll buy some too - my frunk button is broken.

  19. Haven't exactly done anything on the car but....

New Frunk and boot release buttons ordered £39 from Amazon (previously repaired them, but for that price not even worth looking at).

New Frunk and boot gas struts ordered as per previous posts from Autodoc so thanks for those £49 all in.

2 New rear tuning forks (like on the first post here) and 2 Front bump stop rubbers from Spyder - loving the layout of their updated website for the spares they offer. £167.70.

Should keep me busy in the garage for a bit now that it looks like it's going to be warm enough to go out there.

Oh and some new Meguires polishing pads for when I get really bored.

  20. Yeah you can’t win if it wasn’t under the cover (Halfords supposedly breathable one) it would be green on the outside instead. It’s parked outside the house on a gravel drive. I did most of the leather with Glipton just before I laid it up at the end of November. I think the green stuff is just on the bits I missed. Bloody disgusting. Note to self - try harder next time.
