  1. Took the car cover off so that I could run it and found my interior one of my mates described as baby poo brown was also covered green fluff. Tried no to cry in front of the Mrs as she has another project in my garage I have to finish welding up. Left her to clean it up for a bit and then stuffed a domestic humidifier in until it was down to 35%. I think it might be making a trip to my mum's garage sometime soon until this blasted lockdown is over.

On another note I can't get the keyfobs to lock or unlock the car anymore as the battery has been disconnected does anyone know if there is a trick ?

I see you have the same small component eating gravel driveway as me. Mine consumed a screw from the side light assembly today to go with various other bits I have dropped when carrying out basic maintenance! 🤣

Yep me too. Makes for square wheels the next day if parked on after a spirited drive (all the stones stick at the bottom). Great for security though.

Had a few hours so decided to pull the rear arch liners and have a look behind them.

    Some mud/crud but nothing scary.

That’s offside.  Black tube is roof drip pan outlet pipe.  Small tube on the wing is clamshell drain outlet pipe.

near side similar.  Assume the bigger pipe comes from the inlet / snorkel side.

interesting that the bottom of the drip pan drains are perforated  Porsche really don’t want those to block

And had a chance to clean the inside of the wheels and get the old wheel weight gloop of the wheels.  ( yes it has a wheel on each side at the back.  Just couldn’t be a***d to upload two pictures of the inside of my wheels )

Was going to drive it but then the Gin started calling me.

    Might do the fronts tomorrow.

Don’t look back back. I did on mine today.

    14 years of abuse

Obviously had a a new rear quarter at some point.

If like the 986, slacken the top nut. Undo the 3 top mount retaining nut, marking your camber position.  Jack up and after removing wheel and slackening the inboard bolt on the bottom coffin arm the whole assembly should drop enough to come out clear of the wheel arch, if not use the spring compressor at this point.  Use spring compressor to take the tension off, finish removing the top nut and hey presto top mount and bump stop all come off.  Reassemble in reverse and particularly remember to torque up the coffin arm inboard bolt with the load on the suspension (either in the air with a jack supporting all the weight of the suspension enough to take the weight off an axle stand or on the ground if you can get underneath OK.) And line up the top mounts with the marks you made with your camber setting.

It is worth stripping and re-greasing the top bearing whilst you are in there at the front and also changing the front top mount, Sachs (OE supplier) are about £50 a pair on eBay without Porsche part numbers (you can see where they have been removed before the final plating process in the factory) on them or £150 each from an OPC.

Really useful to know. One of mine needs doing and I was looking at it and thinking...I wonder !

Glad to know it can be done without removing the whole strut to use spring compressors.

    Thanks

    ^^^ Definitely looks a lot better 😎

Oh great thought you were talking about my front end ! Further up the post there is a picture of it with Homebase shampoo and no lacquer.

Have to say the seats do look great though.

Also forgot to mention- gave it hell through the hindhead tunnel under the devils punch bowl today 😁

  6. Finally got around to getting some paint well lacquer really put back on the front bumper when I washed it off !
Clay bar on order to sort the rest out...

Had to run back and check that that is definitely not bird poop and just clouds reflecting in the bonnet after I took the picture.

    Some new paint

  7. There is a bit of a minefield out there with these. I’ve tried Car Rover HID’s and they are awesome but illegal now in the UK. So have MCL LED’s instead which are not as good and one has gone mental in less than a year so can’t reccomend. Also have H7 Car Rover LED main beams and are much better than standard but a bit shadowy. They are all about 6000k from memory and very white if not a bit blue. I will be looking at 5000-5500k next time as a nicer light.

None have caused canbus problems in the Porsche but do in a Merc - Weird. I did try some early LED’s and they did raise errors/ blinked on and off. Happy hunting and please post links/ brand if you find any good ones. Technology in this area has come a long way in the last 3 years!

What/where did you source the tuning forks from? Been looking to do my fronts and keep looking at the E-Porsche ones on ebay, claim they are off the same production line as the leading German ones and seem a good price.

Seams like a no-brainer to me as they are a good price for the kit of four and you don’t have to run the gauntlet of getting the wrong parts.
They even do the switchable exhaust I have a few hundred quid cheaper than I paid 😡

    @Buzzlt 987.1 3.2S 55 plate.

Will wait to see if GSF will take them back, if not will use the for the rears.

Will have a search for your post. Think i have found a pair of the correct ones on Ebay, Spyderperformance. Same guy who i got the tuning forks from.

Should be the same as mine then. It is an 06 plate 987.1 Dean knows his stuff. Local to me if you need any help with a courier. Had the same problem with GSF with lamda sensors but it was about 6 Months after I bought them that I tried to fit them.

    Here you go

  10. Yep the aluminium castings are the same Front and back but the centre bushes are different on the front from memory. If you look at my other posts you might find one where I had the nightmare of finding the right ones. They will fit on the back and might actually fit in the front but theoretically I think they modded the fronts with sturdier centre bushes. I think I worked out that they were the same front and back as the new ones you have in the picture on a 986. The originals on mine had the same 986 part numbers cast in which was a bit misleading when you check what it should have in the PET. The fronts look the same as the originals you have in your picture. Oh yeah and they have the big washers either side of the centre bushes.

Its a bit of a minefield sometimes. What year model is your car exactly ?

  11. Drove to work (as we make bits for the NHS etc apparently). Then had a nice roof down drive over to my mum to drop off her groceries as she is 83 and has Leukemia so not all good. To make up for it had a good blast through the Hindhead tunnel on the way home. Exhaust flaps open but obeying the average speed traps  of course.

  12. Removed the offside front track rod end, cleaned up the thread and tried to get the ns off. Drew blood and gave up. Going to have to cut it off so ordered two new ones.

Looked at the previous post about uploading photos and my free Flickr account is full so I couldn't. Spent an hour or so deleting them and checked randomly and I now have 987 !!

So leaving it at that for now as it must be a good omen on the 13th.

Heres a link to some of the older photos that might interest given some of the previous jobs people have been doing.

  13. Well refitted the front wheels after polishing the insides as it’s not everyday that you can get to them is it. I regard to the previous posts I wouldn’t be surprised if I last cleaned the rest of it in November although it’s maybe not been used since January. So it will probably need a respray. (I did look to see where detail1 was bit a bit far to travel).

Roughly checked the tracking and as I did it before changing the tuning forks I can confirm that what somebody said about not needing to get an alignment done afterwards is a bit sniffy. 0.35 deg of negative toe. Also had an extra degree of negative camber on the near side. From what I can remember I had about 7 degrees of negative toe at the front after changing the coffin arms but each to their own.

Hopefully drive it to work tomorrow along some of Hampshire’s finest.....to let it settle down then  maybe point the wheels in the right direction.

Massive thanks to red rocket for comming back with the numbers so quickly.

Oh and I might sell the set of Cayman wheels I have on it if anyone is interested let me know as think I prefer the original crab claws can’t decide  but could be swayed.

Finally managed to change my front ARB bushes and drop links after various struggles last week. Took me most of the day but with helpful tips from forumites and previous threads I was able to remove the drop links and free up the ARB to get at the bushes. There was alot of corrosion around the bushes themselves - just look at the state of them:

    jqKsO66.jpg

No idea whether this affects performance but they've been there for 13 years afaik so a change can't be bad. Cleaned up the ' housings' as best I could with a wire brush etc This is the first real bit of mechanical work I've ever done on a car so very satisfying. :)

Been absolutely p*ssing it down here so no chance of a test drive to check out the effect on the knocking noises that prompted the changes.

Under those bushes is the page from the manual I have just spent the last hour or so looking for. Please could somebody post the tightening torques for the bolt for the front of the front tuning forks. The bolt from the tuning fork to control (coffin arm). And also the bolts that hold in the front anti-roll bar bushes ?

I think Mr BT is messing about in his green box up the road and I am loosing the will to live !!

I’m not replacing the coffin arms as did them a year or so ago. So don’t need to replace them. I did find a useful bit of info if any of you like me can’t find the right page in the manual which reminded me they have to be tightened with the car loaded. I think on some of the original ones they actually had arrows that you are supposed to line up before tightening. I know from experience it is REALLY nasty to drive if you don’t do this.

  15. Try the AUTODOC app. £87 I think. Only just looked at it for the Boxster and they have all sorts of parts on there from a choice of different (Bosch etc) manufacturer’s. I bought some parts from them for other cars and the delivery was not the fastest (I expect you can pay extra), they turned up in around 5 days. I think they are based in Germany.

Might be ordering some new wiper blades £17 for Bosch ones with the bent passenger side blade. I suppose I should have checked the price of the tuning forks. They seam to do just about everything and the search engine is quite a bit more specific than most so we might actually get the right parts....

  16. Put in some new rear pads and replaced the wrongly supplied lamda sensor. Mainly because on a Christmas do last week one of my mates said he would drive it down to Dijon for me In May so I can take it around the track. I will be diving something else the rest of the way 😕 Plenty of time to bed then in though 🙂
