Yep - you are in the mad tax zone for cars registered between Mar 2006 and 2009 - gen2 cars are £365

    The two contradict.

Do you mean a taper roller bearing

    Yes.

I think that this bearing is a very good load carrier.

but do you know what spec/loads would be required to specify correctly?

Have no idea. I hope that the shop will be able to help. In any case I plan to use a reputable shop like Hartec or AMS.

Unless it is a very early 987, then the type the needs the crank case to be split to replace... (or e very expensive machining in place operation)  What's your engine number?  Check it against the number ranges below:

My IMS is the large internal bearing. The list is correct.

How much to buy and fit a TC, ball park? Worth it as a preventative measure? Or do they normally go for 25 years and you were unlucky?

I have asked for a refurbished TC, the cost was £370 +VAT.

I don't think that it worth doing as a preventative measure as you need to remove the gearbox. I was charged for 14h labor but this included other repairs that I have asked for, so say that it was ~11h direct hours on the gearbox +VAT. The gearbox parts and labor was £1800. Total was £4820.69 but this included other bits such as the water lines, stirring, exhaust clamps etc.

In my opinion, when you have to take poison take it in one go.

  5. years ago I have asked what could be the reason for the +/-200rpm when driving at 50mph (sorry can't find the original thread). Some opinions and assumptions where shared but there wasn't a definitive answer.

Yesterday I picked up the car after gear box rebuild. There was general wear to the friction disks, bearings and seals, the multi function switch was worn and the selector rod end was cracked. However it was concluded that the engine revs were not kept due to faulty torque converter. When pressure was applied it was noticed that the locking mechanism of the converter didn't hold and the converter slipped, also, it was suggested that the faulty converter caused/accelerated the wear on the gearbox.

When the box was out other items were replaced such as the engine breathers (were split), water line, exhaust gaskets and clamps and a steering tie rod was replaced. It wasn't a cheap job but now it is a different car, the road handling much better and when the foot goes down the Ferraries become small...

Hallelujah 😀Success. Thank you Northway Porsche.

I went over there this afternoon to check on whether the Dansk exhaust was supplied with gaskets, clamps and fittings. They took one look at the price for the Dansk (with rear cats) £2002 VAT inc, which doesn't come with all the fittings, they're extra, then a Rapspeed tailpipe £680 VAT inc, then add the cost of fitting I wouldn't have got any change out of £3000, which they said you might just as well buy an original Porsche.

They asked why I hadn't chosen a Miltek which had a better warranty and cost less. When I said that I couldn't source a Miltek for a 987 Gen 1 2006, a quick phone call to their supplier and a price for a Miltek, tailpipes, plus fittings included was £1200 + VAT. It was a no brainer the Miltek was ordered there and then and the car booked in for fitting. The Miltek has a similar sound to the Dansk is a lot quieter than the Designtek and has a much better warranty. I didn't realise that one of the flexible couplings on the Dansk is of suspect quality and that's the reason the warranty was dropped from five to one year.

Pease report back after you drove it for a while.

    Thanks

It was first registered in May 2005 so this should have the larger internal bearing (don't have the engine number with me) but it is always better to have visual confirmation.

Although he’s not active on here anymore I am pretty sure trooper did a 987 roof swap for someone on here.

He trades under the name of torqueboxsters if nothing else he would set you straight on big job or not.

Are you sure the trade name? Isn't it Torque Porsche?

Interesting. I have a 2005 S project car which has yellowing lights. What do people recommend?

I have considered to do it myself, then I turned lazy so took it to someone I know who owns a classic cars body shop. They removed the lights, polished, coated and placed in the oven for (I think) 1h.

The cost was £40 per light, 5 years on and they still look as new. Sometimes it's not worth to save on the pennies.

  10. Sorry, my mobile went funny so no reply above.

It is about 10h labour just to remove and refit, then the repair work.

Main dealer will not repair so your options are only with a good independent.

My garage charges £85p.h so I look at £1000 labour and assume another £1700 for the box + vat.

Given the cost of 'box out it might be worth doing a transmission fluid and filter change (unless the service record show one has been done recently) to see if it can resolve the problem, but if it is as @Nobbie indicates this will not make any difference.

This doesn't help, did it X2, no change. I intend to carry a full rebuild of the box as it doesn't make sense to invest the removing/refitting (~10-11h total) cost just for the torque converter...that is unless someone will show me that I am wrong.
