  1. Having bought a Boxster with a hard top, I originally thought it a good selling point as the paint matched the car. Having got to summer I took it off and blow me what a pain to store safely. Even though I had the proper stand they are heavy and far far larger off the car than on it and not easy to store. I eventually sold it (to a forum member) as I was having my house altered and had nowhere to keep it afterwards. I now rely on the soft top and don’t regret selling it one bit.

Having sold so many 986's, I have met all of the new owners and 95% I would say are in the age bracket of 50-70. As such, one would like to think that they are experienced drivers and this is why insurance premiums are good value.

I got my first 986 about 5 years ago as a weekend toy when I was 35 which is a lot younger than most owners that I meet.

I’m not surprised at the age bracket you quote.
At least you can get a Zimmer frame in a Boxster and you can’t in an MX5.

BTW I’m near the top of your range at 67 going on 68

  3. Ouch, that’s a bit of harsh hard love for a fellow sufferer.

I think at sometime we will all face a possible end of the line scenario so be kind.

Chukkieegg don’t jump out of the window just yet. There is love around!

  4. I would’ve thought the lack of an MOT and an engine that won’t pass one means you have to sort it or take a huge loss, or you are selling a well sorted chassis and running gear.

I was horrified when my first bill came to £2,500 three years ago but since then new brake discs, pads coffin arms etc the bills keep coming.

As stated you either love it or flog it.

  5. Interestingly Dave P you have a good solution of a helmet and goggles but the car probably aint too good on the slopes.

My next door neighbour with a 63 TR4A drives with string gloves, flat cap and WW1 style Biggles goggles

  6. Ok, the next stylistic problem after gloves must be the question of what hat to keep a balding bonce warm, if of a certain age of course!

The dreaded bobble hat, Porsche baseball cap or flat cap (to go with the 60’s string vest and gloves).

Now where’s my Damart catalogue for longjohns?

  7. I may well be seen as a cheapskate but like some others with use limited to weekends and only doing 2,000 miles during a Covid year and 6,000 the year before I decided to stick with new Accelera PH1 from Oponeo at £59 each + £10 fitting.
My reasoning being, my MOT tester says that modern tyres fare badly due to lack of use or a car being static too long causes sidewall cracks in modern tyres. So if the worst happened I’m still at least £80 a tyre better off then PS4’s
I find these tyres fine for my needs around Derbyshires shyate road surfaces and definitely don’t drive like a nun,

In fact my reaction times have improved!

Many thanks for your in depth reply, following the links made for interesting reading. Going to the Gan website certainly explained the benefits of a plug and play system compared to a specific re-map + it’s car transferable.

    Cheers Dave

  9. Has anyone tried, or would recommend Can Ga+ as a performance mod at the reduced price of £160. Seems to produce decent gains in BHP and a lot more torque for small outlay and it can be controlled from a smart phone.

    Cheers Dave

  10. Maybe better to buy the cheapie, that way you won’t feel so peed off if it were to get nicked like the VW bonnet badges used to be.
Big difference in price and on an oldie it’s a good % of its value.

WBAC won’t even offer a price on my car, so an £80+ badge?
NO CHANCE MY CARS NOT THAT VAIN
