Thanks all for help and advice, that's what makes this forum so good as there is always someone I ask for help.
Steering wheel finally fitted after lots of fussying around, it's very fiddly for my quite big hands so wasnt enjoying it one bit. Had a play around with broken CCTV system this morning and put my back out carrying a ladder not wearing a coat but a t shirt I the cold at 8am this morning that will teach me so hot water bottle now and some woods rum on the go. Steering wheel all working over the moon with the look.

Thanks all like everything when you move them around they go in I ended up taking alot of the wires as my fingers are too big and its fiddly. Here me thinking it's a 30mins job I've spent hours on it lol

Rob, if they won't go in it could be that you have to release a locking mechanism on the connector.
I'll have another look it doesnt feel right so I'm going to take it all off and try again.

They should click in when pushed all the way home, if you can pull them out they are not right
Do you know what they control I've got it all back on just those springs now where I have no idea where they come from normally pretty good at taking pics in the dismantling stage but didnt at that stage.
-
Do they push all the way in until the wire sheath is only showing at the top?
-
Thanks all it's in but just feels like it needs to go in further I've released the purple clip and push that back in. Should have took some pics as i was going along.
Not sure if the 3 springs go back on the wheel hub now as they dont sit without falling out loo one thing after another. Got the how to but it doesnt show it in the pics....
3rd pic is where I think they go lol

it was a pain in the ar*e, haha, took me over an hour first time and my hands were sore, took it off a few times since and have found if you use your free palm and push in the airbag while poking the wire it comes free easier!!!!
Cheers thanks yeah I was using a little screwdriver and once I used the larger one it popped out. Next problem is the red and black wire, I cant see to push it any further into the connector block the wires are quite thick I thought to push in so dont want to connect it all up not even sure what the red and black wire does. To me it looks as if they need pushing in but they wont go and I dont think the yellow trim top will fit back on after if they are not fully in and cant find a photo anywhere on the net covering this part.

Managed to do it, needed a bigger screwdriver

To anyone that has done this how hard was the spring to release from the original airbag. Pushing it up in the hole but it's just bouncing back and not moving the airbag?

Adapter was delivered today from the China guy so will attempt to swap out my old MF wheel with paddles with the new MF wheel with paddles. Fingers crossed I have no problems.

Great result!
Remember to mark the centre on the splines before taking off your old wheel. GPS Paul has some good "how to" videos on his web site, helped me s great deal.
Ok that's good to know I'll watch a couple of vids and how toos aswell just to make sure I dont mess it up. Biggest worry was the right wheel but seems that wheel is used across the range.

spent alot of time talking to sellers on ebay and the GPS guy, ive since purchased the Cayenne MF steering wheel and a Airbag (went for plastic as its about £50 cheaper but wish i had gone for the leather now)
just got to wait for the virus to die down in china before GPS guy can start shipping again and i would imagine when he does there will be a backlog
Cayenne wheel looks the same as the macan and 718

Rob I think the heated steering wheel is simply a new clockspring and some coding, you may get lucky here.
yeah ive been talking to the GPS guy and as much as I dont want the heating side of it i just want to make that wheel and airbag from two different places isnt going to cause me a issue. Fingers crossed he comes back and i can get them ordered.

Way beyond my security level!
As regards the wheel and the airbag, I purchased both from my local OPC, they came with the "Porsche" tax however!!
It is important for them to match-up; model and serial numbers, so I was told.
My 981s is a manual, so I did not have to think about extra paddles. However, if your original MF wheel as the buttons instead of paddles maybe you will be fine.
Thanks I didnt know that, im buying the airbag and wheel from two different places.

Hi RobPorsche
I fitted a MF (no heating) wheel, 718 style, but probably from a Macan to my 981, which didn't have either MF or heating, so I needed the 'Chinese' adapter to get it to work. I think I recall a thread where someone had upgraded 981 paddle to Macan (718 style paddle) and they needed the adapter to make the new style work with the old mechanism. See https://gpsadapter.us/pages/steering-wheel-type
Also; there is a setting in PIWIS to change from non-paddle to paddle, I didn't bother with this initially and it worked and I didn't get any errors. Secondly from my experience on other areas on my cars, fitting a heated unit, where a non heated unit was specified will most likely cause issue, either with function, error or both.
But you could give it a try and always go back. Try e-mailing the 'Chinese' adapter guy, who I found very helpful and he will be able to confirm I expect.
OK great thanks, i thin it will work my only issue is that as the new wheel has a heating button and my old car doesnt will that cause any issues or faults if not its only a tiny button so i can jus fit it with the adapter but i'll ask that guy and see what he says
thanks

quick question as im about to purchase airbag and wheel. they are from different companies.
the Wheel is a Macan MF with heating and paddles.
I have in my 981 S a MF steering wheel without heating and paddles.
Would this just go straight on, im not worried about the heating so i guess that would be redundant but is that ok when the wheel is plugged in will it give me any errors ?

gave removing the old rear diffuse ago today, honestly dont know how anyone can get the diffuser off when its still on the car. Really easy to remove just push the tabs out, even the dreaded centre bit was easy, its a clip type tab and a screwdriver lightly pushed so it pops the tab out means it pushes straight out. Tons of stones tucked between the two bits of the diffuser.
Fingers crossed the fitting is just as easy, got some more ceramic trim coating for the diffuser aswell.
-
removed the rear bumper today, before i did that i took the front bumper to painters which i should get back in a week in two. Cleaned the radiators and plastic and treated the plastic to ceramic protection. Going to try to remove the rear diffuser tomorow, i should have been able to replace it with the GTS but i was actually sent the wrong diffuser so had to return and replace. No rush.
My neighbour brought a gift round, a little porsche keyring!
Bought some mesh for behind the grills aswell which i will fit once i get the bumper back.
Discussed wheel colours aswell with the painter, after playing around on photoshop im not brave enough for gold so going to go as close as possible with the hyper silver already on the wheels

great thread, really good read and well done on turning it around.

Yes, same experience here too, just the adapter from the guy in China. I didn't bother to disconnect the battery either to make it simpler still.
Oh really that's good to hear. I had a few issues when I disconnected the battery for fitting the seatbelts but issue resolved after a long drive.
What have you done to your 981 today?
