  1. Hello Peeps

    Well by means of an update my 986 S is finally being put back together after 5 months in my local Indy!!  I wont bore you with the detail (see other posts for that) but when rebuilding the rear suspension I noticed that one of the dustcovers on one the ball joints is split.  I guess that was done when the ball joint was initially split apart, or could have been pinched when it was being put back together.

    No problem thought I - I'll just order up a replacement from the OPC however wasn't expecting the response of 'I'm sorry sir but that part isn't spareable on its own so you will have to by a new wishbone which we can offer you a special price of £278'!!

    I have has a quick Google and the rubber boots seem to be available on eBay for £3.70 a pair but does that really work?  I guess this must be a fairly common issue?  I appreciate I could get cheap aftermarket coffin arms for a fraction of the price but the ones on the car are genuine Porsche and the bushes and joints were all perfect until this little issue.

    Any info gratefully received.

I agree with the other posters on here.  I went through exactly the same process as you last week but for the rear suspension.  In the end it was nearly as cheap to by from my OPC (which is also Porsche Bournemouth as @red rocket) and you can be sure you get the right thing!  Yes you could fairly easily source standard bolts etc from a local hardware store, or online, but I wouldn't want to take the chance with suspension/brake fixings just in case you end up with the wrong spec/pitch/length.  Equally I doubt you would be able to find the eccentric bolts and washers from anywhere other than Porsche and be able to say it was identical to what you were after.

    If it helps I get 5% min discount from my OPC but that can go up a bit depending on how much the part/order is and whether they have it in stock already.

  3. Hi quick question (hopefully) but car now into month 3 of its refresh and is starting to be put back together. 🙄

    The driveshafts really need to be stripped so they can be powder coated and the joints cleaned and repacked with grease.  The inner joint is fine but the outer joint is refusing to budge and the 'cap' shown in the pic below is either going to fall apart, or will have to be cut off.  Yes I know it looks like the joint has been in the sea for a few years but that's what a car with full Porsche and Indy service history look like apparently!! 🤣

    The garage was only too pleased to spend a few hours getting the joints out of the hubs when the gearbox came out I can tell you (NOT)! They are happy that the rest of the shaft and joints will clean up and be fine other than this 'cup' (excuse description).

    So is this part spareable in its own right or is it part of the CV joint itself?  I have had a look in the parts catalogue on line but cant identify this readily.

    Any help or guidance gratefully received.

To be fair at 21 months old I think they're a bit young to safely control a 986.  Maybe a 2.5 or 2.7 would be OK but if its a 3.2 S then probably not.  There is also a massive issue with reaching the pedals at that age so if I were you I'd let them down gently and suggest they wait until they are a little older!! 😉

    Hi ½cwt.  I agree fully.  'Stupid is as stupid does' on my part springs to mind!

    To answer your question mine is a 2002 (although a 2003 model according to my OPC) so is an early facelift with glovebox, glass rear screen etc.  Its only done 59,000 miles with full history (part OPC and part Porsche specialist) so I thought I was buying a good one (looked for over a year before finding this 'bargain'!)

    I'm happy with the rest of my decisions so far but am still contemplating banging my head against the wall over the gearbox decision.  Why oh why did I send it off to be checked without asking about the consequences of that decision is what I keep asking myself.

    For the IMS I have bought the 'eternal fix' kit.  Interestingly when enquiring about the bearing from my local OPC they said 'you cant just buy the bearing as it comes with the intermediate shaft'.  I'm not sure that's right but as per the start of this reply - what do I know?  Obviously nothing springs to mind!!

  6. This is embarrassing but I just wanted to share my worst idea to date (in the hope it makes me feel better!).

    As some of you will know from my other posts my Boxster S is having a bit of a refresh in my local indie but that has run away with me a bit in that its now had:

    New suspension all round

    Calipers refurbed all round 

    New rear discs

    pads all round

    IMS bearing

    RMS

    Clutch and flywheel

    I thought that was going to be the end of it (bearing in mind this all started because the RMS was weeping!) but then I made a really dumb decision which was to get the gearbox checked while it was out of the car.  There was nothing majorly wrong with it but you had to be careful of 1st to 2nd when it was cold.  When warm it was fine but I thought I would get it checked out as it might need 2nd gear synchro at worst.  BAD IDEA.

    Report from the gearbox company (very reputable and recommended) is - new 1st and 2nd gear cluster, new bearings throughout, new this, and new that.  Total cost £2200 plus VAT 😞

    So what was a small issue to start with has just snowballed into spending as much on the refresh as I spent on the car to start with!

    Yes I could not get the work done but the gearbox is now in bits and looking around a used manual box is just shy of £2k - and of course that might be just as bad.

    Moral of this story is done your homework first and then once you've done it - do it again!!

It very much a matter of personal choice - but I actually like it!  Is the interior light grey as well (dash top looks grey?) if so maybe that why the original owner specced it that way.  As other has said it might not be everyones choice but its different from the rest and alos looks in fab condition.

    If the rest of the car is good, and the service history and mileage is right then why not.  Better to have one than not have one!! 🙂

    As some of you will recall my Boxster S is in at a local indy for a 'light' refresh.  That has become a saga worthy of a book but latest update is the DMF is ******!   After a quick bit of research it looks like the only options are:

    1.  Genuine Porsche

    2. LSUK aftermarket

    3.  Good used

    I already have a replacement Sachs clutch kit that was ready to go in but wasn't expecting to DMF to be toast (car has only done 60,000). The flywheel surface itself is fine but way to much rotary movement in it apparently (I did see it in situ and yes - a lot of movement)

    Any pointers/thoughts/recommendations would be appreciated!

    Perfect - will absolutely do that as want to drive it rather than look at it once this is all done.  The only fortuitous thing at the moment is it wont stop raining so not too painful other than the effect on the wallet  🙄

  10. Went to visit my 2002 3.2S in my local garage where it has been having a 'light refresh' for the past month 🤨

    Front struts now replaced, along with new top mounts, refurbed calipers, new pads, brake pins, anti squeal shims, etc

    Gearbox now out and sat on the floor but going away this week for a check over whilst IMS, RMS, clutch all changed along with new rear struts, refurbed calipers, new discs and pads!!

    Whoever said there is no such thing as a cheap Porsche was very much correct!! 🤣

    I have a pair of Kinetix front discs for yours on eBay at the moment.  Brand new in box and would do you a deal if interested.  Search for item number 203433400282.  They came with my car but I never fitted them.
