We usually say it’s not the peak numbers that matter, it’s delivery across the range.

Yeah, that's what I was hoping for, as I've said previously I wanted improved mid range and wasn't particularly bothered about top BHP, I think I've got that and improvement lower down as well. Not everyone will think it was worth it and maybe they're right, but I'm happy and for me that's all that counts 😁

  2. Ok, so I drove down to Bexley heath to Sanspeed to have my remap done 😁 A few hours later Martin came out and said "That went better than expected! With just the bolt- ons  you did that brought the BHP up to 244 and now after the remap it's 260! Not bad for a 2.7 boxster"

So as you can imagine I'm rather pleased 😁 Here's the graph .......

  3. In the short time I've had my 986 I've found it to be an easy car to work on compared to most, the Germans certainly have a way of making it accessible for repairs and mechanic/DIY friendly, it's just the parts that are over inflated. Saying that, I also got stung by a garage who claimed they'd repaired lots of Porsche's, I took mine in to have the exhaust replaced because I knew the manifold bolts were going to be a nightmare to remove, they 'had a go' and then farmed out the bolt removal to a specialist, without informing me, at a cost of £750 and with the 'work' they did they charged me £2,400 in total.

Definitely! I think a few have been melted before when manifolds have been changed👍
I hope you do get on the dyno, it will be really interesting to see the results.
    Looks great 👍

Thanks, booked in for a custom map with Sanspeed on the 31st

Has all this been done to a 2.7?

P.S If it’s not done already don’t forget to wrap your power steering pipe near the manifold 👍

Yeah it's a 2.7, the complete exhaust was rotten so changed it for a s/s one, then kinda got carried away 😂

Not overly bothered about top end BHP, just looking for a bit better mid range, and a growl is always pleasing  😁

Good call on the power steering pipe, I'll do that today 😉👍

  6. I have got a 987 airbox, just not sure I wanna mess about fitting it 😄 the intake kit is designed to work with the OE one.

    https://www.uniwerksdesign.com/product/porsche-986-carbon-fiber-intake-plenum/

Read about this guy on the 986forum (Ben), he designed it and tested it on his own 986, he's from France but it is made in the USA.

The design has changed slightly so as to accommodate the original AOS pipe, so you don't get the one shown, and I notice the price has gone up, I got mine for £417 all in and it arrived within two weeks 😁

design 911 do some self-maps.  If it's a 2.7 986 i can't really see how much gain can be sought from the engine with a remap to be honest but I'm not an expert.

Maybe see if Mark Sheed can advise you, he's on here occasionally and is an expert!

Have you done much work to free up the airflow?  That's the usual place to start to get bp gains, throttle body, airbox along with a free flowing exhaust.

Yeah, it's got a full s/s sports exhaust system, 74mm throttle body and plenum, with a K&N air filter

  8. Does anyone know of a decent place to remap/tune a 986 in Norfolk that doesn't require selling a kidney to pay for it? Looking at a stage 2

Oh, and while I'm at it, anywhere that will fit my new vinyl rear window?

The baffles.work best inserted in to the silencer after the u bends-at least that's my experience anyway. This eliminates the odd noises that you've mentioned and also hides the baffles from sight.

    Does it eliminate the droning?

  10. Well the baffles arrived yesterday and I put them in, firstly without the end caps, and then with, it kinda took the edge off the droning but it was still there, and it started whistling a bit like a two stroke bike when slowing down in town 🤣

With the end caps in the whistling stopped but there was a small amount of vibration instead 🙄 and it was still droning, not as bad, but still too much for my liking. So I'm going to change the back box, any recommendations? I was thinking along the lines of the quieter Dansk one

  11. Didn't touch the MAF, and it's a new one. Anyhoo, decided to clear the CEL and take her for a drive, after 20mins no CEL and no 'missing' and accelerating better than ever!

Maybe it needed a bit of time to adjust after sealing the air leak at the plenum.

I know the garage had to cut one of the lambda sensors out of the old exhaust because it was seized solid, maybe they damaged it 🤔 I'll replace both anyway. I'm just crossing my fingers all's well now🤞

  12. Ok, so I tested for leaks and there was one around the throttle body to plenum, sealed that and it is better but it's still running rough, the revs are going up and down on idle bringing on a CEL, and it's hesitating when you put some revs on. I plugged my Isoft in and it's coming up with a misfire on one bank, 4 5 6, don't know if it's trying to adapt to the new set up or somethings wrong, maybe I'll try putting the old intake system back on and see what happens.

Ignition on, don't touch throttle, leave for circa 1 min until you hear the click of the throttle butterfly, ignition off then start car and drive.

Thanks, just tried that but still rough, will look for leaks tomorrow with brake cleaner

That designtek box is very similar if not identical to the eBay ones.

As for the rough running it should not run rough. Did you do the throttle body reset? Have you ensured there are no leaks along the intake?

Yeah, I thought because it was sold by Design911 it would be better, obviously not 🙄

how do you do the reset?

    Will check for leaks

  15. Well, I got ebay manifolds u link pipes and cats, and DesignTec back box from Design911 https://www.design911shop.com/Exhaust-Muffler---Silencer-with-Chrome-Tips-for-Porsche-Boxster-986/prod146655/?source=doofinder

After wincing at the state of the manifold bolts I took her to my local indy to remove them and fit the exhaust, which proved to be rather expensive as he had to get a specialist in to remove all 12 bolts and fit heli coils.

Anyhoo, it's all done now and I've fitted a 74mm throttle body and induction kit, it now runs like a dog until it learns what's what, or I've had it remapped. I've ordered a couple of baffles for the back box because it drones, will let you know if they work! 🤪

  16. That's great, thanks Ad_78 😀

Do you have any links to the ebay parts? Can you get cats that will pass an mot on emissions?

Don't really want to change them over every year

  17. Hello peeps 😁

Ok, after my paranoid meltdown thinking maybe my IMS bearing had failed I had another looky and the noise was actually coming from low under the engine at the front, so I took the aux belt off and felt the action and movement of the bearings in the alternator, tensioner, etc, as I felt the water pump pulley movement it was quite bad and the bearing felt very rough I did notice some coolant had been dripping onto the cover underneath as well. So, there seems to be quite a few different makes on the market ranging in price, Pierburg seem to be the OE ones, Which would you recommend? also would you replace any of the rollers, thermostat, etc?

On another note, i bought a set of 'surefire' coilpacks off ebay    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124760273903?hash=item1d0c4ab3ef:g:AyMAAOSwt5hYY-6Q

I've since been told I may not have made the best choice 🤔. What do you reckon?

If in the unlikely event that it is a failed IMSB, you will not be replacing it! :(

Time to look for a replacement engine.

Get it to your Porsche specialist who will diagnose.

    Good luck with it

    It still runs?

  19. Sorry to revive this thread, but .....

Yesterday I went shopping and on return to the car and starting up a CEL came on 🤔 it was idling but only just, very rough, drove off and she seemed fine, acceleration was good etc, so when I got home I plugged my newly acquired isoft POR v2 scanner in and it came up with  'misfire cylinder 1, 3, 2 and 'misfire cylinder 4, 6, 5 in that order,so I started to look at camshaft deviation and it was 'camshaft deviation position 1  -9.27 😲

At this point the engine started to labour and I heard an awful squealing and then a grating noise coming from what seemed to be the back of the engine, so I quickly turned it off! Eeeeeek! 😂

So I'm guessing that'll be the IMSB shagged then 😢

After re-reading your knowledgeable thoughts on this, and my questionable ones 😂 I've decided to replace the IMSB like for like, thanks for the link for the bearing ½cwt 😉, replace the RMS, flywheel, clutch and while I'm at it, the complete exhaust system.

Any pointers on parts always welcome 😁

Thanks for this information and photos, it is very helpful !

I need to replace one of my mounting plates as it has a crack at the point where the light locating pin latches into place.  I glued the cracked piece back in place as a temporary fix, and have been dreading replacement.  Based on what you've posted here it seems like I have no need to fret.

    I like to share 😁
