  1. When I bought the 986 the facelift headlights had two burn marks on the inner lenses so I decided to replace them with originals, I took them out and the mounting plates were broken and the wiring had been extended to reach the headlight socket ........

So I bought second hand plates and wiring looms from a scrappy and went about changing them. The looms were easy enough to replace, just take the wheels and wheelarch liners off, unplug the connectors, and plug the new ones in following the original routing.

Now comes the fun bit 😉

The plates are held on by adjusters ....

You DO NOT want to remove these adjusters from the car unless you really have to, from the picture you can see the knurled adjuster, then a slit, then the adjuster threaded washer, then a gap then the fixing nut, this all needs to stay in place. The plate sits on top of these adjusters held down by another flat fixing nut, you just want to remove these top fixing nuts without disturbing the ajusters underneath, so, holding the headless bolt with a T15 torx socket ....

You want to remove the flat nut with a 19mm spanner, do this with all three adjusters and you will be able to remove the plate with the adjusters still in place, DO NOT disturb the adjuster nuts underneath.

Then it should just be a case of placing the new plate on the adjusters, holding the headless bolts again and tightening the top nuts down ..... (this is a final 'tweek')

Next, slip the connector into the bracket ......

And slide the yellow locking tab upwards to lock it in place ....

Slide the headlight in making sure the locating pins locate in the rails, and turn the locking tool clockwise to snap it in.

If you have to make adjustments to the headlight fitment up and down do this with the nuts before placing the plate on, if you need to make adjustments back and forth you need to turn the headless bolts clockwise until the adjuster is loose then move them either backwards or forwards as needed.

    Done ...

  2. Looking at the headers and connecting pipes on the 986 they need replacing so I've decided to go for a full stainless system, I don't want anything ridiculously loud or that drones on the motorway, it's a road car and wont be used on track, a few more ponies would be nice but not essential, with a budget of about £1500. I presume I would need to get an induction kit and a re-map as well?

Any recommendations/advice very much appreciated 😁

You could leave your manual heater controls where they are & install your double din into the center console where the 2 cubby holes or cd holder are located (one of cubby holes goes where single din head unit is under heater controls). Not done in mine yet but have seen it done.

Yeah, I thought about that as well, you could get a head unit to fit but I don't think it would look right and the gearstick might get in the way.

Thanks for the detailed instructions probably not something I’m going to tackle far to involved and I really don’t want to take my dash out.
I congratulate you on your achievements though it looks great

Thanks, you don't need to take the dash out to do it, it was just easier because it was. Totally understand though it is fiddly and time consuming.

How did you find moving the heater controls? How long a job was it and did you need any parts?

You need a dremel and a lot of patience, I already had the dash out as I was changing it because it was sun damaged at the front, so it made things slightly easier. You need to un-clip the cables going to the controls, lift them up to disconnect from the dial arms easily and slide the controls out, take pictures so you know which cable goes where.

Then remove the lower console and detach the side panels etc, using a dremel, other makes are available, slowly open up the top aperture and remove material until you can slide the controls in, I then drilled through the panels and control brackets and used short self tappers to hold it in place.

Remove the cover from underneath the dash on the passenger side and the ducting going to the air vents, then you will see the cables and where they attach, you need to pull these down and reroute them through the top opening in the metal mounting bracket, the black one is the hardest but you can get it through.

Now remove the self tappers, slide/jiggle the controls back and attach the black cable first as its the shortest, then the others until they're all good, screw back into place.

I used the pocket that came with my double din kit to go underneath and reshaped it to fit, the original is too big.

If your 986 is a daily I would get a second hand console and heater controls and take your time. I suppose it took me about 8 hours from start to finish.

  6. Managed to re-locate the heater controls and it came out fairly well, I sprayed the center console/radio trim silver but I don't like it so I've got another console + radio trims and some decent vinyl, thanks for the info SuperPaulie 😉, and I'll cover them at my leisure instead.

  8. Went to tighten the two bolts that hold the interior light/locking handle for the roof, and surprise surprise the nuts have snapped and won't tighten 🙄 how the hell do you change those? They appear to be integrated into the roof bar.

    HELP!!! 😲

    Please 😄

  9. Ok, thanks guy's

The car was originally bought for the Mrs after looking for an MX5 for the summer, but for the same price of a decent MX5 I saw this boxster so I thought "hmm, I've always wanted a Porsche" 😄 so now it's kinda turned into a keeper after already spending a fair bit to get it to my liking, and deciding it's 'our car' 😂, well I don't see why I have to drive around in the Civic, while she swans around in a Porsche!

It will be used during the week by the Mrs but only for trips to the gym, which is only 5mls away, and the occasional trip to the supermarket, the rest of the time will be nice sunny weekends and hols in this country, although that will depend on MPG somewhat 😲😂. So I'm guessing around 3-5k per year.

After reading all your thoughts on the matter I've decided to leave the clutch/IMS until the clutch actually needs doing.

    Fanks 🤪

  10. Ok, so my 1999/2000 986 that I have just bought has 96000mls on the clock, should I consider having the clutch and IMS bearing done now or wait until the clutch actually goes, or not bother doing the IMS at all, is it all just hype?

I phoned JMG Porsche and they quoted ....... wait for it ......... £3000! 😬 That's for clutch, flywheel, IMS and rear seal. Although this is likely to be a keeper, I think that is taking the proverbial.

So, what to do 🤷‍♂️ The clutch is ok and bites half way up, although quite heavy, but I guess that's because it's a sports car? There is a small amount of oil under the engine but that might be from a leaking plug tube which I'm replacing soon 🤔 Opinions please, and if anyone knows of anywhere cheaper near'ish Norfolk, please let me know 😁

  11. That looks great! Worth the effort and I love the centre console too, where did you get the vinyl/leather and how did you fit it? I've got the console out at the moment and was thinking about spraying it silver to match the paint, but now I might do it similar to yours. How did you do the ashtray delete?

    Sorry, so many questions 🤣

I don’t have AC either, you have got a big job on your hands there, it’s a classic PITA job, and one I’ve not attempted after initial research put me off

Did you find any information? I haven't up to now, but I have ordered another facia which I can possibly use as a donor.
