Ebay - £44 or best offer, free postage

I remember when i needed a new (secondhand one) that i ordered from Steve Strange via ebay and he rang me up to check the age of the car as i believe that the newer versions have a different number of switches or something like that. I would give him a ring (Douglas Valley Breakers) and check the new one will work with your car

  2. Last year used a company in Witham (Essex), too far for you but it was £80, i had been in a month before and they could not adjust due to seized bolts and he refused to charge me, despite being up on a ramp for at least 15 mins. That was great service. There was a guy having his 911 track car checked over, apparently it will take them about 2.5 hours minimum and he comes in prior to every race, to get it set up. If it's good enough for him, good enough for me !

That specific part number in a 2002 onwards for a manual S with OBC.

There is a whole minefield for part numbers for there varying from the colour of the dial faces to with or without OBC.

I's recommend downloading the Porsche parts cat for a 986 from here and looking at sections 906-01 and 906-02.  For a 01 2.7 and to get OBC you need a 01- instrument set and M481, M659 characteristics.  On top of this you will need stalks with the lower stalk on the left side to control the OBC (and if you are going that far why not retro fit cruise control too, if you want it, as that needs the 4 stalk version of column stalks.  Porsche Classic Genuine Parts Catalogue - Porsche Great Britain

A number of indys advertise retrofitting OBC and Cruise as a service if teh above info is too baffling to sort through, it takes a while to get used to the parts cat.

Just to let you know I bought a 4 stalk from my OPC this morning for £298 inc. you might also need to get the stalk end covers, I swapped mine over and have ordered the cruise control one. I have seen them on eBay, secondhand for nearly £450 !

  4. New stalks fitted, including cruise control. Had intended to repair the old one (indicators) as it wouldn't have passed the MOT, but last night a vital spring made an escape bid, never to be seen again ! Rang OPC this morning and £300 later, a brand new four stalk. Problem was I told the misses that it was about £260, forgot the VAT. She says that all her clothes shopping prices will now be exc. VAT !

  5. I have started to put together what i need for a rear suspension refurb. I have ordered some H&R springs (normal height) but have been told they are on back order, any suggestions on other good makes ? I don't want to go any lower than standard height.

he alarm siren unit has rechargeable batteries which draw their recharge from the main battery. Your car is at an age that the rechargeable batteries probably no longer hold their charge and put an almost constant draw on the main battery. This gets interpreted by the car that it's being tampered with and sets off the alarm.

The alarm siren batteries in the alarm module can be DIY replaced - there's a YouTube video - or you can just disconnect the siren module which is what I have done. The horn will still sound when the alarm goes off.

Thanks @Boxob I knew it had it's only battery but didn't know it was replaceable. I will have a look at that, although at the moment I am quite happy to know it will not go off and wake the neighbors up !

Low battery charge.  How old is your battery?

I must admit that was my first thought. I tested the battery and got a "Good-Recharge" but a voltage of 12.23v which does seem a little low to me. Anybody know at what voltage the battery would cause the alarm siren to go off ? As for age of battery, not sure but at least 2.5 years as that is how long I have had the car.

  8. Well the alarm went off at 10pm, checked it all over but wouldn't even switch off when the car was started. Then noticed the CEL light had come on. Checked and it was trouble with Cylinder 6. That is ok I have a new coil pack, can do that in the morning! Out again at 11:30pm as alarm started going off again, have you ever tried to disconnect the alarm at almost midnight, I don't recommend it. Out at 7:30am to jack up car, remove rear wheel, replace coil pack on cylinder 6, put it all back together and ready to start work at 8am. All this so I can take it to the Indy at lunch time to get new front suspension springs fitted ! Don't you just love them !

And they won't improve with time. Love that one. Come back in 6 months and we will charge you again. 😮

Assuming you haven't written it off in accident when the brakes don't stop you !
