GTS v Spyder

Was out in my GTS Friday night blasting about. I love it, but I would really like more power and more torque (It doesn't need it i know, but would be nice to have), the rest I apart from the long gearing (but love the manual and would never change for PDK) is fine.

So i started as you do watching Video's on Youtube of the Spyder, but couldn't find a comparison. To change to a Spyder its 20K, and i really like the flexibility the electric roof gives. I have X73 suspension and a Manual, but obviously not the power to weight of the Spyder, nor the steering (which is supposed to be better), I think I have the best compromise says my head......

Anyone driven both? Just writing my thoughts out....

For me personally at a 20k premium I do not believe it is worth it so I wouldnt go there but...

On the other hand it may devalue less so could actually save you money....(insert man maths here).

987 Spyders seem to be in the ranging from 33K to to 45K, with special editions at 50K.

This 981 Spyder has the spec I'd like, not really keen on Red... http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/boxster-981-12-current/981-spyder-buckets-chrono-sat-nav-dab-xpel-paint-protection-film-one-owner/6146217

Alot more miles in this one http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/boxster-981-12-current/porsche-boxster-spyder-3-8-manual/6145629

981 GTS seem to be holding there money too, I couldn't get mine if i tried again for the same money, would have to pay quite a bit more. Never looked at it from a devaluation point just more power/torque, bigger brakes, lighter etc.

It's one of those questions which is down to personal choice.  For a buyer who has neither car (or any other 981) then it would depend what could be found and then comparing specs and prices.

I wouldn't change my BGTS for a Spyder as I chose the spec on my car and had it from new so it's very special to me.  I've no idea what I will eventually change it for, or if I will ever change it, but I might get tempted by something in a few years time.

I have driven both. I've got a 981 Spyder and I had a 981 Cayman GTS last year for a week.

Both great cars but different. The Spyder is a more involving drive and, if its possible!, sounds even better than the GTS. However, you pay your money and take your choice, and both are very nice cars to have in the garage.

You've posted a similar thread on Pistonheads and it seems some of those guys there have moved from GTSs to Spyders and perhaps their feedback is the best for a comparison between the two cars.

What was the spec of the GTS you drove out of interest?

I would have thought a GTS with sports suspension and manual should feel close to a Spyder, save for the engine and steering rack. A PASM car would always feel a little more disconnected though.

I also replied on PH to the original question....

The car had sports suspension but PDK. The Spyder just felt a little more engaging although, as you rightly point out, it could well be the difference with the power unit and steering.

Cheers Guys. My GTS is on sports suspension and a manual, pretty much the spec i wanted, I'd probably spec cruise and folding mirrors in addition, thats it.

I think i need to go drive a Spyder and see how different it does feel in real world terms.

Price wise, GTS's seem to be commanding strong money right now, manual's with a good spec seem to be rare.

Yes John i had a read of what people are saying on Pistonheads too. Its a tough one......

I live in North Kent and if you are anywhere local I'm more than happy to meet up to give you an opportunity to compare the cars. As you say its a tough one as they are both great cars!

@jayk, just interested, why interested in only a manual on the Spyder? I drove 987 Spyders and the PDK was just fabulous for lightening quick downchanges alongside heavy braking int the corners on the Porsche track...

Also, that red one looks fabulous and a lot of thought hs gone into carrying the red into the cabin. A classic porsche colour too.... maybe it could be wrapped in the short term if you really didn't like the colour?  I'm not a fan of the look of 981, but that particular car might sway me... I'm very tempted myself...... fortunately, I've noticed that the right exhaust is slightly higher than the left, and that would drive me mad, so I'll walk away.

Hi John, thanks for the offer mate, but I am in Shropshire so quite some distance.

I just prefered the manual in the 981, its more involving, feels like your actually driving the car. Always had manual cars, out of the 30 I have had 1 has been Auto (cruiser). I did do 450 miles in a 458 Spider last year and did think the auto box felt great. Lol I never noticed that, its playing with my eyes now!

Holy moley, that money gets an 8 yr old Gallardo Spyder.

Hmm yeah but then you want the face lift so they start at 90, then you see a MK1 Superleggera at 100K lol. For 75K Boxster Spyder is bang on imo.

If you want more power, get this:

http://www.tpcracing.com/981-turbo-kit.html

The engine internals can take the extra power, much more bang for your buck plus you get to keep your electric roof.

My last build blew me out, as much as I enjoy modifying I wont be anymore. Just driving lol.

Not something I would do on a car as new as yours.

Perhaps if you still have in in a few years how tempting it would be to drop the car and a newly purchased turbo kit into a specialist and (effortlessly) have not only something faster than a spider but also most 911's.  Best way to get more torque!
