New(ish) 986 S Owner (too!), first service report

Had my 50,000 miler 986 S since mid-June and took it to Revolution Porsche in Brighouse yesterday for a major service. Though the previous owner had a 'full service history' I'd neglected to notice how many stamps in the book weren't from Porsche-looking specialists. And going through the old bills and MOTs it looked like the previous owner (for ten years) hadn't driven it that much and seemed a bit clumsy in parking - there was a receipt for a new wheel, another for a wheel bearing, another for a key fob and tilt sensor - so I suspected that the car hadn't been driven much, but hadn't been loved that much either. The biggest flaws to it at the moment are a non-working driver's heated seat and the CD player doesn't accept CDs... The front and rear bumpers have been resprayed and the wheels have been refurbished. All are 'acceptable' rather than excellent jobs, but it buffs up just fine...

Recent receipts did show a new clutch and RMS, gearbox oil and so on, so it wasn't all bad.

So it was with trepidation I took it in to the boys at Revolution to see just how bad it might be. And I was pleasantly surprised that there were no huge surprises. In all, they were impressed with the state of it, both underneath and bodywise, for the age and there were no extra bills in with the major service (which included brake fluid change). Great bunch of guys too.

The advisory list looks potentially expensive, but at least it looks like I can pick and choose when I replace things. First a photo of it looking gorgeous...

And now an edited highlights of the list of advisories:

A few things like the petrol cap leash missing, which I can do myself. And a couple I can live with, like it's missing the lower middle grill trim completely for some reason (bump? respray?)

A couple of the suspension bushings are starting to come adrift, plus a top mount on one shock is starting to do the same. They seemed happy that it'll wait til next service.

Bigger things - the RMS has a very slow leak by the look of things. (Incorrectly fitted last time perhaps?) The car's not lost any oil in three months, but there is definite oily dampness at the gearbox join. Revolution suggests waiting until I get the clutch done, but as it was done a year ago, that's not on the horizon. Do I leave it and get on with it, or replace it and get the IMS done at the same time? (No mention of it being done when the clutch was replaced)?

All four tyres 'heavily cracked' - despite looking good and with plenty of tread, I guess it's been sat around a fair amount - so that's a £600 job looming...

Single exhaust clamps corroded away - an excuse for a whole stainless system? :-)

The roof cable has stretched on one side, which means that the roof doesn't quite sit in its channel above the door and there's room for drips to get inside. Back and floor carpets are dry, but the door card is wet - not sure if that's the roof leaking or the new door membrane needed that Revs quotes.

Anyway, not too bad. I'd been braced for my £500 service to actually cost a grand, and it cost £490... So that means I've got 'spare' money for some new tyres, right?

Any suggestions on what I should get seen to first?

Yeah, happy to spend money on decent rubber. And there are enough 'What tyres' threads that I won't get into brands here, but I'll be buying some quality ones soon I reckon.

Hi Chipps nice report and I'm pleased to read you got away lightly I was not so lucky I was at Revolution Porsche in Brighouse for a post purchased check and the list I got was longer than your arm it took them two days one of the days they had to work until very late into the night and then all the next day to be able to do the urgent work but they managed it.

I'm back in October to get a new clutch ims and rms and a load of other things sorted.

When that's done I can start to worry about finding the money to get the bodywork sorted because it's a mess.

It begs the question why the hell did I buy it when I work that out I'll let you know but I would not sell it now it runs great.

I agree with you the guys at Revolution Porsche in Brighouse know there stuff.

Ouch, sorry to hear that yours wasn't quite what you imagined. I was expecting news more like yours, to be honest. I guess mine's a little newer (2004) but it sounds like yours is getting there...

And I found that the hour's drive there, and back afterwards, in the autumn sunshine, with the lid down, was almost worth the service price alone - it reminded me what a great car I have!

The list was a tiny bit longer than that, but in terms of major worries, that was about it.

And I was definitely grinning on the way home, with a freshly service, washed and vac'd car (It was already waxed...) down some Yorkshire lanes. :-)

Now for some tyre shopping. I'll get searching the hundreds of 'What tyre?' threads...
