MK986
Hi guys, I just had a problem with my gear linkage, which has been resolved. HOWEVER, my indy just called me to say that the car turns over, but won't start. There are plenty of threads about starting problems, BUT one easy fault it might be, is that when I dropped the car off on Monday, I noticed that my battery had run out on my key/fob. Central locking didn't work, and I had to open it by turn-key. Point is, I advised him to change the battery in the fob, in case the immobiliser is in fact the issue, and this is why the car won't start. Any thoughts on this? Thanks, MK
edc
Test the fuel pump.
MK986
Indy called me 30 mins ago and tells me car still won't start, turning over, but won't start. Checked the battery, tells me it''s ok. BUT the electric roof will now not open either... wth (?)
edc
That's all well and good but what fault finding are they doing? Seemingly the battery is good, the starter motor spins but is there spark? Is there fuel going through?
james_ly
As far as I know the battery and circuit board in the fob has nothing to do with the immobilizer? My fob is broken (will be replaced soon!) but I can still drive the car.
golfprorich
I'm not sure how the standard immobiliser is set up, does it cut ignition, spark, fuel pump? As said your mechanic needs to do basic no start checks first. Seems unusual that it got driven into the garage ok then after the linkage changed it now won't start. Needs to double check nothing was dislodged or something like a fuel line got trapped when lifting.
Rev Ken
If it doesn't tell them what is wrong using a computer they must be stumped! Strange that elementary checks such as fuel, spark etc are no longer the first actions!
MK986
Hi and thanks for feedback. It's running again!!! Turns out the electric roof was a fuse he knocked out of place. Easy fix. I read that the immobiliser will stop the car from cranking. Issue is: (As far as mechanic is concerned) fuel pump relay dropping voltage and pump struggling. Fix: To get a new pump and relay. - I'll get this done asap. Any tips on fuel pump (which one) please let me know. As for the key-fob. Mechanic changed the battery, but was unable to sync it to car. I did the unlock door, press button, lock door procedure, but NOTHING.. it's not working. Any other tips on the key-fob, please let me know. edc
I presume your Indy isn't a Porsche specialist as s/he should be advising and quoting on parts and fixes. As for the fob, the quickest and easiest and probably most cost efficient as a first time fix is a new fob. Transfer over the blade and immobiliser pill. The immobiliser system is rarely if ever a fault on these cars.
MK986
@edc not a Porsche specialist.. no. New fob £300 ?
MK986
@edc I'm asking for people's opinions on the forum regarding the fuel pump. Mechanic gave me his input
Richard Hamilton
I would change the fuel pump relay first, and take the cover off the old one to see if it is burnt inside.

New fob is £115 + VAT from Porsche, then it needs coding (less than £50 from specialist) Sounds like you need a new mechanic! If he says the fuel pump relay is the problem, why replace the fuel pump instead of just the relay...?
MK986
@james_ly I hear you, and I'm not entirely sure. I'll get the relay in, and wait to see if the problem happens again. Strange one.. I had something similar with my 924 many moons ago, and the relay cured it. (obvs completely different car).
MK986
So, battery on fob needed replacing, as the light was fading. After battery replacement lights are glowing strong, but as you already know, central locking doesn’t work. Alarm sounds great. Neighbors love it! Read a few threads and one pointed at micro sensors being shot. This suggested due to double beep when locking car. It had been doing that for a couple of days now. Funny how it comes all at once. MK986
Second key works!!! Not the microsensors after all.
